0 Eqypte Mont Ube Noirmont Creepy Valley St Catherines Lecq Fern Valley First Second Third Total PRF Surveys • Led by Piers Sangan • Transect surveys in several woods • Climbing of trees to check PRFs for suitability • Use of camera trap to trail use for emergence and re-entry of bats at roosts/suspected roosts • Confirmation of BLEB roost site in Greve d’lecq • Problems: time consuming to check trees and obviously many PFRs in the woodlands Static Detectors

• Led by Ed Bell • Placed in the 7 woodlands surveyed in 2017 • Many thousands of sound files recorded, of which some still need analysing • Majority of calls are common pipistrelles • Analysis would be made easier by using auto-ID software to screen out the common pipistrelle files, knowing that we will then miss a percentage of other calls mixed in • New microphones may reduce the noise on the file and enable better ID (automatic and via hand) • When not used in the woodland project – used in other survey work Bat Boxes • Co-ordinated by Miranda Collett • The bat box project has been running since the end of 2014 and currently we have a total of 101 boxes erected in 9 separate woodlands in Jersey • These boxes are monitored for bat occupation every month between April and October by volunteers from the Jersey Bat Group and frequently during the winter months (plan to check year round from 2018) • Data loggers were placed in 10 boxes (5 Kent and 5 Schwegler) and were programmed to run for up to a year. Most of these have now been removed and are currently being analysed • They were programmed to record temperature in the box every 3 hours. Bat occupation is thought to raise the temperature by 2-3°C so this could give more information on bat occupation outside of the official checks

37 Survey design and responses

• We used Survey Monkey • Only 10 questions for free, so we used this to in fact ask about 15 questions! • Survey emailed about and also a link placed on Facebook • Most responses were received swiftly, with a few ones forthcoming following email reminders • Responses from a total of 19 members (27.14% of people emailed) • This is a good percentage response for a questionnaire, but the 72.86% are probably the people we wanted to engage with further • Most people answered all of the questions • We received useful feedback (thank you) • We will enact changes based on the results • The survey is now closed for the purpose of this analysis, but if anyone still wanted to complete it then it is still open • Now on to the results from the 10 questions!

38 Q1 We will be proposing to raise the annual membership fee* at the next AGM from the current cost of £5 per year. Which of the following amounts would you be willing to pay for annual membership if the fee was raised?

* Please note that we are not proposing any changes to our corporate membership fees

39 Q2 We are looking at member training requirements for 2018 and 2019, which of the following would you like to attend? Please indicate your preferred days and times for the training you can select more than one day or time and as many training courses as you wish.

Please rank these events from 1 (not interested) to 4 (yes, I'll attend!). If you have any other suggestions then please use the 'other' box to let us know.

Please indicate your preferred choices from the following (more than one answer is acceptable).

13 people provided email addresses and noting interest – we will be in contact with you!

46 Q9 In 2018 we will be refreshing our website, but as there are many ways to engage with members please can you let us know which of the following electronic communication and social media sites you use, and which do you prefer to consult to find out about JBG events and news?

Comment (1) Meetings!

47 Q10 Firstly, thank you for your time in completing this survey. As a final point, what else do you think we can do to improve the member experience?

Comments (8)

1. Improve newcomers knowledge 2. More engagement during member meetings. 3. ? 4. Bat walks are probably the best way to encourage new members 5. Seems to be a divide in group, so much emphasis on trapping & having to attend til ridiculous o’clock in the morning, it’s putting less experienced people off or less dedicated people such as me. Appreciate some have to stay late to pack away but it’s not for everyone. Seems to be little alternative activities. Happy to expand if anyone wants me too 6. My first impression of JBG, was a positive, welcoming and friendly one. Keeping this culture is important. The group has a diverse range of activities, so there should be something for everyone of all abilities. We need to make sure all activities are supported, often last year it was the same core trying to cover everything and feeling guilty if we weren’t available to help with fundraising etc. Possibly extend committee membership so that those actively involved in the group are more involved in general decision making? 7. Separate committee meetings from ordinary meetings 8. Please more site visits to a variety of known bat locations
