DURRELL WILDLIFE CONSERVATION TRUST DURRELL IS AN INTERNATIONAL CHARITY ON A MISSION TO SAVE SPECIES FROM EXTINCTION The great British writer and conservationist, Gerald Durrell, was a visionary, a pioneer and a man with a mission. He believed that good zoos could do great things in conservation, and more than 50 years ago he set out to prove it. Gerald founded Jersey Zoo in 1959. In 1963, it became a charitable trust and was renamed Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust in 1999. Through the Durrell Index, we are able to measure the effectiveness of our work and demonstrate our impact. We can show that of all the species whose chances of survival have improved in recent years, more than 12% owe their upgraded status to Durrell and its supporters. He depends on the lake for his livelihood, but it’s under threat, which has a devastating impact on him and his family. Durrell intends to expand the patrols at the lake and elsewhere, protecting even more of Madagascar’s extraordinary wildlife, people and habitats. The Alaotran gentle lemur is one of the rarest primates on earth. It is only found in the reed beds surrounding Lac Alaotra in Madagascar. Deforestation and agricultural expansion are destroying this critically endangered species’ habitat. Durrell Community Patrols are protecting the remaining marsh – this unique animal’s only home. 17 SOLUTIONS WE INVEST IN Conservation Science Durrell conducts scientific research to understand each conservation problem. We then design and test management actions that make a difference on the ground. This ensures that all our conservation decisions are based on the best evidence available. The Durrell Index is our flagship tool for measuring our conservation actions and impacts on the endangered species and habitats that we protect. durrell.org/index Captive breeding Some endangered species bred at the zoo, like the mountain chicken frog, are returned to their home countries for release to the wild. Others are closely studied to discover the optimal conditions in which they can express natural behaviours. This information is used by Durrell’s field teams to enhance their understanding of the species in the wild and the threats they face. 18 Management and restoration of wild populations and habitats Durrell has over 60 staff working in the field to study, protect and restore focal species. We work with local partners in 18 countries to identify the main causes of a species decline, identify options to reduce these threats and develop long-term restoration plans. Restoring a species takes decades and habitats even longer. We have a track record of more than 30 years of dedicated conservation in our field sites, where our projects support a wide range of broader activities leading to whole ecosystem restoration. The late Roderick Dobson, an English naturalist resident in Jersey between 1935 and 1948 and from 1958 to his death in 1979, was the author of the invaluable Birds of the Channel Islands (1952). In this, he brought together the results of his meticulous fieldwork in all the islands, and his critical interpretation of every record—published or private—that he was able to unearth, fortunately just before the turmoil of the years of German Occupation (1940-45) dispersed much of the material, perhaps for ever. I concern myself here chiefly with the changes recorded during the approxi• mately 30 years since Dobson's record closed. Species considered to have shown little change in status over those years are not listed.

We have enjoyed the feedback received thus far based on NS 1 and believe that what we have received is auspicious for going forward in the same vein. In this issue we choose to highlight a piece that is authored by ILDS’s president – Dr. Isabelle Keller- Privat, titled “Durrell’s Cyprus, another Private Country”. This is an excerpt from a presentation that she provided at the On Miracle Ground XX conference held in Chicago in 2017. We are also pleased to include a contribution from Françoise Kestsman-Durrell as well as from Noel Guckian, the current owner of the Mas Michel, occupied by Durrell from 1958 to 1966. In addition, we have interspersed some artwork by contributor Geoff Todd who has taken his inspiration for this series of images from Durrell’s The Alexandria Quartet – look for the corresponding article from Mr. Todd, as well. The incomparable Grove Koger builds out our Durrell-related bibliography in his ‘Chart Room’. Those simple questions, each leading on to a vast web of intriguing, inspiring and challenging answers, underpin the creation of this report on Jersey’s identity and how it should be understood in today’s world, both in the Island and internationally. The Island Identity Policy Development Board is proposing for consideration a comprehensive programme of ways in which the Island’s distinctive qualities can be recognised afresh, protected and celebrated. It is the board’s belief that success in this aim must start with a much wider, more confident understanding that Jersey’s unique mixture of cultural and constitutional characteristics qualifies it as an Island nation in its own right. An enhanced sense of national identity will have many social and cultural benefits and reinforce Jersey’s remarkable community spirit, while a simultaneously enhanced international identity will protect its economic interests and lead to new opportunities. What does it mean to be Jersey in the 21st century? The complexity involved in providing any kind of answer to this question tells of an Island full of intricacy, nuance and multiplicity. Jersey is bursting with stories to tell. But none of these stories alone can tell us what it means to be Jersey. In light of all this complexity why take the time, at this moment, to investigate the different threads of what it means to be Jersey? I would, at the highest level, like to offer four main reasons: First, there is a profound and almost universally shared sense that what we have in Jersey is special.

With only eight pages of photographs for 761 pages of text, they can hardly even begin to sum up the visual aspects of the management of captive animals. But it is churlish to comment adversely on these minor points when the author has provided us with such an immensely useful desk volume. Those who have been enchanted by Mr. DurrelPs previous animal books will not be disappointed by this one describing the first five years of the Jersey Zoo at Les Augres Manor. It consists of a series of delightfully told anecdotes about the inmates of a very happy zoo. Visiting there last summer I was immediately impressed by the tameness and general well- being of the animals, due, I am certain to the pains which Mr. Durrell and his staff take to get to know each one as an individual; they all recognised and greeted him with unmistakable affection when he passed by. The author is conservation-minded, and he describes the dilemma of the zoo director faced with the offer from a dealer of a young orang-utan. Should he refuse it on the grounds that to accept is to stimulate further demand ? Or should he accept because his zoo offers the best chance of survival for this particular animal ? Until the zoos and conservation authorities have this question worked out and until the recent legislation controlling the import of rare animals in this country becomes effective, the zoo director must be guided by his conscience and balance his altruism against his acquisitive enthusiasm.
