    Fun Facts about Dr. Seuss • Dr Seuss’s real name was Theodor Seuss Geisel but his friends and family called him ‘Ted’. • Theodor Seuss Geisel was born on 2 March 1904 in Springfield, Massachusetts. • Ted worked as a cartoonist and then in advertising in the 1930s and 1940s but started contributing weekly political cartoons to a magazine called PM as the war approached. • The first book that was both written and illustrated by Theodor Seuss Geisel was And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street. The book was rejected 27 times before being published in 1937. • The Cat in the Hat was written as a result of a 1954 report published in Life magazine about illiteracy among school children. A text-book editor at a publishing company was concerned about the report and commissioned Ted to write a book which would appeal to children learning to read, using only 250 words given to him by the editor. • Ted was fascinated by research into how babies develop in the womb and whether they can hear and respond to the voices of their parents. He was delighted to find that The Cat in the Hat had been chosen by researchers to be read by parents to their babies while the babies were still in utero . • Writing as Dr Seuss, Theodor Seuss Geisel wrote and illustrated 44 children's books. and These books have been translated into more than 15 languages and have sold over 200 million copies around the world. Rocco The University of Texas at Austin, Austin, Texas, USA ([email protected]) Abstract: While books and illustrations for children are often regarded as secondary art forms, The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art in Amherst, Massachusetts is thoughtfully honoring the art of the picture book. Founded in 2002 by Eric and Barbara Carle, The Carle is a full-scale art museum dedicated to collecting, exhibiting, and celebrating picture book art from around the world. In this paper, I examine how the exhibitions and educational programming of The Carle demonstrate the museum’s authentic commitment to and respect for the art of the picture book. Key words: illustration, art, picture books, Eric Carle, museum. Through its exhibitions and educational programming, the Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art in Amherst, Massachusetts is celebrating the picture book as a unique and innovative art form. Illustration may still be relegated to minority status in some circles, but at The Carle, picture book art is honored. By hanging the original illustrations in a gallery setting and inviting visitors to engage with the art in a variety of ways, The Carle is fulfilling its mission to cultivate an appreciation for and understanding of the art of the picture book.     1st into 2nd Grade 2021 Summer Reading List ======================= Prepared by Liz Perry, SFWS Librarian for Class Teacher Deborah LeDean On the threshold of 2nd grade, children possess a burgeoning love of story, an interest cultivated in part by rich Main Lesson content and also by caregivers sharing a love of reading and storytelling at home. This summer, whether read-aloud or read-alone moments are offered as quick intakes of breath in the middle of the day or as restful unfoldings at night before bed, the grade-school library would like to suggest books honoring a variety of interests. The summer reading list includes Picture Books and Read-Aloud chapter-books, both Classic and Contemporary, of animals, adventure, friendship, fantasy, and family life. Included here are also Fairy and Folk Tales, followed by the Alphabet Books; while traditional in scope, they build on the 1st grader’s recent acquisition of letters and their sounds—even proficient readers can revisit these. Children can advance to Early Chapter Books (look for series such as Stepping Stones, Puffin Chapters, Harper Trophy), often housed on a separate carousel from older fiction. Recent Award-Winning Picture Books ● Alfie: (The Turtle that Disappeared), by Thyra Heder (2017). Nia loves Alfie, her pet turtle. But he’s not very soft, he doesn’t do tricks, and he’s pretty quiet. Sometimes she forgets he’s even there! That is until the night before Nia’s seventh birthday, when nAlfie disappears! Then, in an innovative switch in point of view, we hear Alfie’s side of the story.
