MSCA Project 789672 [FHNR] – Research Data MSCA project 789672 [FHNR] – Research Data. Bio-bibliographical and Universal Dictionaries and Encyclopaedias This data set captures references to my protagonists (Johannes Braun, 1628–1708; Thomas Gale, 1636– 1702; Adriaan Reland, 1676–1718; Eusèbe Renaudot, 1646–1720) in 18th and 19th centuries bio- bibliographical and universal dictionaries and encyclopaedias. The data are taken from both printed publications and digitized items, starting in 1715 and ending in 1898. The data have been gathered by using a sample of bio-bibliographical dictionaries and encyclopaedias covering publications in Dutch, English, French, German and Latin spanning the 18th and 19th centuries while representing a broad spectrum from small to large, commercial to academic, and unknown to well- known works. The publications selected have been seen through for entries relating to my protagonists, and any matches have been listed and transcribed. Publications without matches have been retained on the list, but represent only a small percentage. The following data were recorded. Year(s) of print. Serial number. Author/editor. B class. Bio-bibliographical dictionaries and encyclopaedias. 103 items. U class. Universal dictionaries and encyclopaedias. 19 items. Each item is tagged with a serial number in chronological order (assigned by the print date of the first volume of the respective title), followed by the class indicator, a language indicator (D=Dutch, E=English, F=French, G=German, L=Latin), and a number identifying how many protagonists are referred to within the item. 023-B-F-2 thus is the twenty-third dictionary on the list (publication beginning in 1763), belongs to class B (bio-bibliographical dictionaries and encyclopaedias), was published in French, and features two of my protagonists (Johannes Braun and Adriaan Reland). The respective references to my protagonists are always listed following their names, in alphabetical order. This document contains the same dictionaries arranged in two ways, first chronologically, then alphabetically by author’s/editor’s names.     chapter 4 Adriaan Reland and Dutch Scholarship on Islam Scholarly and Religious Visions of the Muslim Pilgrimage Richard van Leeuwen The development of Dutch Oriental studies and the study of Islam was from the beginning of the seventeenth century connected with the religious debates between the Catholic Church in Rome and the various Protestant communi- ties in northern Europe. The Protestant scholars subverted the monopoly held by the Vatican on the study of Islam and its polemics against the ‘false’ faith, which was often based on incorrect presuppositions. Debates about Islam became rapidly entangled with opinions about religion in general or about Catholic doctrines and practices more specifically. In their anti-Catholic attitude the Protestant scholars even harboured some sympathy for certain aspects of Islam, although they emphasised that Muhammad should not be considered an authentic prophet. They argued for a more objective examina- tion of Islam, to be able to counter the rivalling faith more effectively. This tendency can be clearly observed in publications about Islam in the Dutch Republic in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. One may argue that the Protestant trend in Oriental studies culminated in Adriaan Reland’s famous compendium of Islamic doctrines De religione Mohammedica, which was published in 1705 and was subsequently translated into various languages. The second edition of the book, published in 1717, which was based on authentic Arabic manuscript sources, not only contained a con- cise but detailed survey of the main tenets and practices of Islam, but was also supplemented with a section in which the main European misperceptions of Islam were corrected.

    Chapter 11 The Manuscript Collection of Adriaan Reland in the University Library of Utrecht and Beyond Bart Jaski When on 4 November 1700 Adriaan Reland (1676–1718) was appointed as pro- fessor of Oriental languages at the Faculty of Philosophy of the University of Utrecht, this was something of a break with the past. In effect, he succeeded Johannes Leusden, who had taught the sacred languages at the Faculty of Theology from 1650 until his death in 1699, and had published widely on Greek, Hebrew, Aramaic and Syriac in relation to biblical texts. Leusden had been a faithful pupil of the strict Calvinist theologian Gijsbert Voet (Voetius), who from the foundation of the university in 1636 until his death in 1676 had dominated the Faculty of Theology, and indeed the university itself. Reland had studied in Utrecht, among others Hebrew under Leusden, but had a different outlook on the relationship between theology and philosophy than his teacher, as his dissertation of 1694 already shows.1 He had acquired an interest in the Arabic language, stimulated by his fellow student Heinrich Sike (Sikius), who had come from Bremen to study in Leiden and later worked in Utrecht.2 In subsequent disputations and in his oration of 1701 Reland would argue for the use of the knowledge of Oriental languages—in particular Arabic and Persian—for the study of Christian theology and its defence against Islam.3 He names those who had already reaped the fruits of this study, includ- ing Joseph Justus Scaliger (1540–1609), Thomas Erpenius (1584–1624), Jacobus Golius (1596–1667), who had all lectured in Leiden, and Johann Heinrich Hottinger (1620–1667), who died before he could do so.4 1 Reland, Disputatio philosophica inauguralis, De libertate philosophandi (1694); see further Van Amersfoort, Liever Turks dan Paaps?, pp.

    Changing Indonesian Sea Names Ferjan Ormeling Utrecht University Introduction Foreign influence on Indonesian toponymy is negligible. Names that are demonstra- bly of foreign origin are only a handful. Examples are the names Flores, Enggano and Rondo, which are of Portuguese origin; some names of mountain ranges in the interior of Borneo still show the influence of German explorers. The names of two prominent cities, Batavia and Buitenzorg, were decolonised and changed into Jakarta and Bogor (Batavia referred to the Batavi, a Germanic tribe living in the Netherlands in Roman times; Buitenzorg is the Dutch equivalent of the French name Sanssoucis). But, overall, the namescape in Indonesia is an Indonesian one. Underneath the layer of Indonesian names, however, there are still foreign influences, masked because they have been translated into Bahasa Indonesia (the Indonesian language), or because Indonesian names were used by foreigners. As far as I have been able to assess there was no indigenous tradition in naming specific water bodies, apart from the South Sea (Samudra Kidul or Laut Kidul) and the naming of Indonesian seas thus was due to foreign or colonial intervention. Sources My sources in finding out the chronology of this sea naming process have been maps and charts, geographical descriptions and pilots or nautical guides as available through Google Books. No Indonesian literature could be found on the subject. I have studied old printed maps of Southeast Asia, in order to find out when specific names were first used, and also manuscript maps: a recent source (2010) is the book Sailing for the East, by Schilder and Kok from the Explokart Research Group at Utrecht University, which presents an overview of all the manuscript charts on vellum produced for the Dutch East India Company (VOC).

    JOHANNES THEUNISZ AND ͑ABD AL-͑AZĪZ: A FRIENDSHIP IN ARABIC STUDIES IN AMSTERDAM, 1609-16101 DORRIT VAN DALEN Abstract In the winter of 1609-1610, the Moroccan diplomat Abd͑ al- Azīz͑ b. Muḥammad spent four months in the home of the Mennonite Hebraist and Arabist Jan Theunisz in Amsterdam. The written reflections of their discussions on religion and everyday matters present an extraordinary example of the shifting attitude towards Islam in the seventeenth century: a development from medieval rejection of Islam as ridiculous to a historicizing assessment of Islam in the early stages of the Enlightenment. The two men developed a remarkable cooperation in the study of Arabic, a language for which around 1610 no textbooks were available. Theunisz’ record of their conversations and a glossary which he compiled during these conversations are here for the first time subjected to an analysis which teases out the content and nature of their exchange in the context of early seventeenth-century contact between Christendom and Islam in Western Europe. Key words: Arabic studies – Amsterdam – Johannes Theunisz – interreligious com- munication – Christendom and Islam In the seventeenth century, attitudes towards the Arabic world and Islam were slowly shifting, in the Dutch Republic as well as in other western European coun- tries2. Maar verder zal de litteratuurminnaar niet licht komen. Iedere letterkunde heeft nu eenmaal haar ‘officiële’ grenzen, die door de gepatenteerde critici streng bewaakt worden. Nu en dan moge er eens een miskend genie ontdekt worden of een onbekend auteur die invloed uitgeoefend heeft op een onsterfelijke - wie eenmaal buiten de tempel staat, zal niet gemakkelijk toegelaten worden. En tòch: deze ‘populaire prozaschrijvers’ (om de term aan te houden; men zou ook van onder-litteratuur of a-litteratuur kunnen spreken) - zij mogen dan niet in tel zijn, hun werk moge onder de litteraire maat blijven en veelal een andere oorsprong hebben dan poëtische scheppingsdrift, uit litterair-historisch en -sociologisch oogpunt zijn zij allerminst onbelangrijk.

    NAMES OF THE SEA BETWEEN KOREA AND JAPAN Based on Jason Hubbard’s forthcoming Iaponiae Insulae (2012) on Western printed maps of Japan up to 18001. Ferjan Ormeling Utrecht University Introduction In the recent past, both in the Republic of Korea2 and in Japan3 inventories were published of printed maps showing Korea and Japan and the sea in-between, with sea-names in sympathy with the relevant position of the respective nations. The underlying principle was, that the case for the selection of a specific name would be strengthened if it could be proved that that name was predominantly used in different periods in the past. The number of cases in which a specific name version was found on different maps or in different atlas editions was used as argument to prove a case. In all these examples of toponymical analyses of historical maps, only the fact that a specific name was printed in a specific sea area was registered (the name location), and the names were not put into context with other names on the map (name hierarchy), nor were different views on the meaning of sea names (directional names, territorial waters, etc) taken into account. Finally, the influence of the map frame on the incorporation of specific sea names was not taken into consideration either. More important still is the fact that the occurrence of specific name versions on specific maps as such does not prove which name versions were predominantly used at a specific time. If maps were to be the only source to derive the dominant name versions from, then their circulation numbers or print runs would have to be taken into account as well.

Introduction The earliest surviving direct correspondence of a learned nature between a Chinese person and an Englishman comprises several letters sent between May 1687 and February of 1688 by a young Christian convert from Nanjing, Michael Shen Fuzong (c. 1658-1691), to the Oxonian oriental scholar and librarian Thomas Hyde (1636-1704). This correspondence had been sparked off by the visit of Shen to London in 1687 in the entourage of visiting Jesuits, and Hyde, always keen to attract native speakers of oriental languages, soon persuaded Shen to visit Oxford.1 There in the summer of 1687 Shen catalogued the Bodleian Library’s previously mysterious Sinica, and the two men conversed in Latin about Chinese matters. Shen was handsomely paid for his labour by the library: ‘Item paid the Chinese for making catalogues to the China Bookes for his expences and Lodging’, £6; Shen’s vocalizations and the Latin glosses of Shen and Hyde remain visible on the books today.2 These were the sources for Hyde’s rough manuscript catalogue of the Bodleian Sinica, in turn the source for the entries printed under the relevant manuscript collection headings in the first union catalogue of English and Irish manuscripts, the Catalogus Manuscriptorum Angliæ et Hiberniæ (Oxford, ‘1697’ [1698]), nominally edited by the Savilian Professor of Geometry, Edward Bernard.3 Although this did not render the books I am especially grateful to Justin Winslett for his patient help with literary Chinese, to Timothy Brook, Noël Golvers, and Kristine Haugen for learned comments on a draft of this article, and to David Helliwell and Anna Winterbottom for our continuing conversations on Thomas Hyde.
