FACETS OF MODERN CEYLON HISTORY THROUGH THE LETTERS OF JERONIS PIERIS BY MICHAEL ROBERT Hannadige Jeronis Pieris (1829-1894) was educated at the Colombo Academy and thereafter joined his in-laws, the brothers Jeronis and Susew de Soysa, as a manager of their ventures in the Kandyan highlands. Arrack-renter, trader, plantation owner, philanthro- pist and man of letters, his career pro- vides fascinating sidelights on the social and economic history of British Ceylon. Using Jeronis Pieris's letters as a point of departure and assisted by the stock of knowledge he has gather- ed during his researches into the is- land's history, the author analyses several facets of colonial history: the foundations of social dominance within indigenous society in pre-British times; the processes of elite formation in the nineteenth century; the process of Wes- ternisation and the role of indigenous elites as auxiliaries and supporters of the colonial rulers; the events leading to the Kandyan Marriage Ordinance no. 13 of 1859; entrepreneurship; the question of the conflict for land bet- ween coffee planters and villagers in the Kandyan hill-country; and the question whether the expansion of plantations had disastrous effects on the stock of cattle in the Kandyan dis- tricts. This analysis is threaded by in- formation on the Hannadige- Pieris and Warusahannadige de Soysa families and by attention to the various sources available to the historians of nineteenth century Ceylon. chapter 4 Adriaan Reland and Dutch Scholarship on Islam Scholarly and Religious Visions of the Muslim Pilgrimage Richard van Leeuwen The development of Dutch Oriental studies and the study of Islam was from the beginning of the seventeenth century connected with the religious debates between the Catholic Church in Rome and the various Protestant communi- ties in northern Europe. The Protestant scholars subverted the monopoly held by the Vatican on the study of Islam and its polemics against the ‘false’ faith, which was often based on incorrect presuppositions. Debates about Islam became rapidly entangled with opinions about religion in general or about Catholic doctrines and practices more specifically. In their anti-Catholic attitude the Protestant scholars even harboured some sympathy for certain aspects of Islam, although they emphasised that Muhammad should not be considered an authentic prophet. They argued for a more objective examina- tion of Islam, to be able to counter the rivalling faith more effectively. This tendency can be clearly observed in publications about Islam in the Dutch Republic in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. One may argue that the Protestant trend in Oriental studies culminated in Adriaan Reland’s famous compendium of Islamic doctrines De religione Mohammedica, which was published in 1705 and was subsequently translated into various languages. The second edition of the book, published in 1717, which was based on authentic Arabic manuscript sources, not only contained a con- cise but detailed survey of the main tenets and practices of Islam, but was also supplemented with a section in which the main European misperceptions of Islam were corrected. -

ALRA Newsletter No. 74 (July 2019) A Diplomat’s Gift: the Martensz Collection on Sri Lanka at the National Library of Australia Introduction Today the Martensz Collection is little remembered, though it is described briefly in that invaluable source on the National Library of Australia’s holdings, the Burmester guide (1). Its donation in 1955 was also covered in some detail in the Canberra Times (2). Presentation of the Collection On 2 June 1955 the High Commissioner for Ceylon (now Sri Lanka), Mr J. Aubrey Martensz, CBE, presented his personal collection of books about his homeland to the National Library (2). The island nation then called Ceylon is now known as Sri Lanka. For convenience the current name Sri Lanka has been used in this article, except for proper names and in book titles. The gift was formally accepted by the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr Archie Cameron, in his role as Chairman of the Library Committee. Those attending the ceremony in the Speaker’s Chambers of Parliament included the Prime Minister, Robert Menzies, the Minister for External Affairs, Richard Casey, and the National Librarian, Harold White. It is hard to imagine a book donation attracting a prime minister and other senior politicians nowadays. Life and career of J. Aubrey Martensz (2)(3) James Aubrey Martensz (1885-1963), was born into a Burgher family in Colombo, the island’s capital. The Burghers, a minority community of mixed Sri Lankan and Western heritage, generally have Portuguese, Dutch, British or other European surnames, the name Martensz being of Dutch origin. -

Ph. Vogel in seiner Erklärung des ersten Reliefs der Räma-Serie von Tjandi Lara Djonggrang1. Kein besseres Argument kann es für die Herausgabe dieses Buches geben als diesen Aus spruch des bekannten Archäologen. Als ich meine Arbeit schrieb, hatte ich ständig oben stehende Worte vor Augen und als ich von meinen Plänen Mitteilung machte, erfuhr ich, daß auch andere so dachten. Die Herausgabe der alten Fotos über die Reliefs von Tjandi Parambanan - wie Lara Djonggrang genannt ward - durch den Arzt Dr. J. Groneman, begleitet von einem kurzen, jedoch meist nichtssagenden, oft sogar falschen Text, ist in der Tat äußerst mangelhaft. Seitdem ergaben die Untersuchungen von Brandes überdies, daß der Tjandi Lara Djonggrang von größerer Bedeutung ist, als man im allgemeinen an nehmen möchte. Selbstverständlich mußte eine erneute Ausgabe der Reliefs mehr bieten als ein Foto- Album mit erklärenden Anmerkungen. -

《台灣學誌》第二期 2010 年 10 月 頁 131-142 十七世紀的諷刺文章: 閻和赫立(Jan and Gerrit)兩個荷蘭人教師的對話 Lampoon in the 17th Century: Samen-Spraeck tusschen Jan ende Gerrit 賀安娟 國立台灣師範大學台灣文化及語言文學研究所副教授 [email protected] Introduction 〈東印度群島巴達維亞城四個荷蘭人的閒談〉這篇諷刺文章是在 1663 年印刷的。 作品中包含四個人物,第一位是商人,第二位是軍官,第三位是船員,最後一位則是教 義問答教師。全文總共 24 頁,包括兩部分。Monumenta Taiwanica 期刊的第一期即以這 篇對話作品第一部分的翻譯為專輯。第二部分的標題為「前大員及福爾摩莎總督尼可拉. 福伯(Nicolaes Verburgh)任內的福爾摩莎政府」。此部分的附錄當中收錄另一篇文章, 題目為「閻及赫立(Jan and Gerrit)兩位荷蘭人學校教師的對話——曾經進駐台灣,分 別任職於蕭壠(今台南佳里)及法弗蘭(今雲林虎尾)」。現階段我們最感興趣的課題, 也是這兩位曾經在台灣居留數年的荷蘭人教師之間的對話。 正如標題所示,閻及赫立這兩位教師之間的談話提到他們的在台經驗。根據這篇故 事的敘事架構,閻來台灣的時間較早,而且被派遣到荷蘭人最早從事宣教活動的區域, 也就是蕭壠的南部。赫立則剛從東印度群島回到荷蘭。如此的情節安排可提供一個思考、 比較的視角,讓讀者來評比閻和赫立兩人的經歷。此外,他們的對話乃是以福伯總督從 1650 到 1653 年的執政為主題。閻在 1650 年代之前來台灣工作,而赫立至少在福伯執政 期間曾經住在台灣。因此讀者若依照敘事邏輯,針對兩人的觀點做比較,亦顯得相當合 理。閻和赫立偶然相遇,隨即展開對話,彼此交流他們在台灣擔任學校教師的經驗。整 個故事的鋪陳依循嘲諷文類的規範,他們兩人批判當時藉由東印度公司的名義所推行的 宗教活動如何剝削在地老百姓。照他們的觀察,在地原住民的困境乃是因教育政策的怪 異實施方式所造成的。赫立特別在意的,即是以當地語言所施行的宗教教育。他並不反 對在地人民以他們的母語來接受教育,而是抨擊這種方式帶給宣教師極大的困難,因為 宣教師需要較長的時間才能嫻熟當地語言中相當數量的詞彙。在此之前,學校教師還得 132 《台灣學誌》第二期 代理宣教師的工作,直到宣教師當中有人能夠以在地語言流暢宣講基督教教義。閻和赫 立兩人在談話中暗諷荷蘭人宣教師「忙著填飽荷包」。在此場景中,有一些嚴苛批評即 便是針對尤尼士牧師(Rev. Robert Junius),亦不令人意外。1643 年尤尼士牧師回到荷 蘭後便捲入一場宗教辯爭。根本的原因在於他同時向阿姆斯特丹的高等宣教法院,以及 十七主任官的最高議會,控訴台灣教會的狀況。在台宣教師接到這個消息之後,大員合 議會(the Tayouan Consistory)覺得迫不得已必須為自己的立場申辯,連當時自認委屈的 在台宣教師也對尤尼士加以反擊。於是,雙方在這場宣教論戰中一來一往,相互指控。 其間,1649 年 10 月尤尼士曾經於阿姆斯特丹的高等宣教法院出席為自己辯護,同時法 院的判決也對他有利,但整個論戰的戰火仍舊延燒到 1652 年才平息。大員合議會雖被要 求撤銷控訴,但事後多年論戰的後遺症依舊存在。尤其是在台灣的荷蘭人社區,尤尼士 這個名字被列為黑名單。在這樣的情境下,閻頗為驚訝,尤尼士回到荷蘭以後,居然還 能夠教導其他的荷蘭宣教師台灣的在地語言新港語,為未來派駐台灣來做行前訓練。 赫立曾經被派任到法弗蘭。他批評福伯總督任由宣教師予取予求,給他們太多執行 -

The Absent Vedas Will SWEETMAN University of Otago The Vedas were first described by a European author in a text dating from the 1580s, which was subsequently copied by other authors and appeared in transla- tion in most of the major European languages in the course of the seventeenth century. It was not, however, until the 1730s that copies of the Vedas were first obtained by Europeans, even though Jesuit missionaries had been collecting Indi- an religious texts since the 1540s. I argue that the delay owes as much to the rela- tive absence of the Vedas in India—and hence to the greater practical significance for missionaries of other genres of religious literature—as to reluctance on the part of Brahmin scholars to transmit their texts to Europeans. By the early eighteenth century, a strange dichotomy was apparent in European views of the Vedas. In Europe, on the one hand, the best-informed scholars believed the Vedas to be the most ancient and authoritative of Indian religious texts and to preserve a monotheistic but secret doctrine, quite at odds with the popular worship of multiple deities. The Brahmins kept the Vedas, and kept them from those outside their caste, especially foreigners. One or more of the Vedas was said to be lost—perhaps precisely the one that contained the most sublime ideas of divinity. By the 1720s scholars in Europe had begun calling for the Vedas to be translated so that this secret doctrine could be revealed, and from the royal library in Paris a search for the texts of the Vedas was launched. -

(KARL 1I!AN?\HEI11) HE Sir Henry Maine, in a classic phrase, suggested that' the move- ment of the progressive societies has hitherto been a movement from W status to contract', he was adverting to that momentous historical process by which individual obligation took the place of group-sanctions as the organizing principle of dynamic or ' progressive' societies.! Certain societies were clearly more < progressive' than others in this sense, and among the least 'progressive' were the static communities of the Eternal East. Social organization and social philosophy bowray this c progress', and the processes of social change which characterize a Time of Troubles are seldom intelligible unless society and ideology are regarded as correlated variables. An exposi- tion of two' ideal types' of social order is a necessary methodological pre- requisite for an analysis of the interactions between society and ideology in Ceylon during the period under review.s In a society governed by what Tennies distinguishes as gemeinschaft social relations, the individual is conscious of himself only through some general category such as the family, the community, the tribe, or the guild.s In these sociocentric communities, 'individualism' is but imperfectly deve- loped; in extreme cases even natural events are normatively interpreted through the medium of the principle of retribution, and every misfortune experienced (e.g. flood, drought, famine, and disease) is regarded as the I. -
