Volume 1–3 & 5–8: contemporary mottled calf, gold-tooled spine and board edges; volume 4: modern calf. Sold Large paper copy of the so-called “folio-edition” (although here mostly printed as 1o) of Van der Aa’s voluminous collection of important voyages to the East and West Indies and other countries, undertaken by all European countries other than the Dutch. Including voyages by Acosta, Balby, Cabot, Cavendish, Chester, Columbus, Cortes, Coutinho, Da Cunha, Drake, Evesko, Frobisher, Gallonye, Da Gama, Garay, Garcia, Gilbert, Jenkinson, Harcourt, Herberer, Magallanes, Mildenhal and Cartwright, Mouette, Petelin and Andrasko, Raleigh, Saris, De Soto, etc. The work was edited and co-published by Pieter van der Aa, known for his ambitious projects. Where other pubslishers were primarily concerned about the profits, Van der Aa wanted to publish out- standing books. For the present series of travels he either reused and revised older Dutch translations or had the original accounts translated for the first time into Dutch. Some occasional spots, a couple minor restorations and a few wormholes; a very good set, but with the fourth volume from a different and heavily trimmed set (though printed on the same large paper), in a modern binding and lacking the frontispiece and the title-page to the volume. The seven volumes with contempo- rary bindings slightly worn along the extremities and with some minor wear on the sides, but otherwise very good. No. 99 ¶ Cordier, Sinica, cols. 1942-1943; Sabin 3 note; Tiele, Bibl. 10. Jesuit missions in Brazil, Asia, and Mozambique 2. A BR EU, Sebastiao d’. Vida, e virtudes do Admiravel Padre Joam Cardim da Companhia de Jesu Portuguez natural de Vianna de Alentejo. Évora, University Press, 1659. 4o. With engraved frontispiece portrait of the Jesuit João Cardim. Contemporary goatskin parchment, red sprinkled edges. € 11 000 First edition of a biography of the Portuguese Jesuit João Cardim, written by Sebastien d’Abreu (1594–1674), also paying attention to his two uncles who were missionaries in the Far East and Brazil. His uncle Antonio Francesco Cardim (1596–1659), travelled for a few years as a missionary in China, Japan and other areas in the Far East. He was the Jesuit superior in Macau when the shogun of Japan forbade all voyages from Macau to Japan. “Cardim ... sent to Lisbon a report that was printed in 1643 of the execution at Nagasaki in 1640 of four Portuguese emissaries sent to Japan from Macau.Translations of this account quickly appeared in French, Italian and Dutch. ... In 1645 he published at Rome his Relatione of Japan in which he also deals at length with the missions in Macao, Tongking, Cochin-China, Hainan, Cambodia, and Siam, placed within the Jesuit Province of Japan where he had worked from 1623–1638” (Lach & Van Kley). The other uncle, Fernão Cardim (d. 1625), was an influential Jesuit in Brazil, one of the first who went to the mission posts there. He became director of a college in Rio de Janeiro and was made “provincial” of the local area. Lacking final endpaper and the bookblock partly detached from the binding. Some of the red paint from the sprinkled edges is found in the margins of the title-page and the engraved portrait and a few leaves are slightly browned. Otherwise still in very good condition. La nouvelle-Guinée ce que j’y ai fait, ce que j’y ai vu. Paris, Hachette & Co. (back of half-title and colophon: printed by Motteroz), 1883. 8o. With 2 engraved maps (1 folding) and 64 wood-engravings, many full-page, including the author’s portrait as frontispiece. Contemporary half morocco. € 125 First edition of the French translation of a work on New Guinea by the Italian explorer and naturalist Luigi Maria d’Albertis (1841–1901). D’Albertis was one of the first Europeans to explore New Guinea, visiting the island for the first time in 1871 to study birds, beetles and reptiles, and discovering some new species. On his other trips during the years 1871 to 1877, he mainly studied the then largely unknown Fly River. During his stay he took many native artefacts, which led to serious tensions with the natives. Many of these artefacts are shown in the wood engravings, along with portraits, views and illustrations of birds and other animals, and were eventually taken to Europe to be shown in museums. The work was first published in 1880 in Italian and in English, titled New Guinea: what I did and what I saw, in two volumes with several colour plates not included in the present French edition. With library stamp on half-title and title-page, and some spots on half title. Binding slightly rubbed along the extremities and with a partly cracked hinge. Good copy.
