chapter 4 Adriaan Reland and Dutch Scholarship on Islam Scholarly and Religious Visions of the Muslim Pilgrimage Richard van Leeuwen The development of Dutch Oriental studies and the study of Islam was from the beginning of the seventeenth century connected with the religious debates between the Catholic Church in Rome and the various Protestant communi- ties in northern Europe. The Protestant scholars subverted the monopoly held by the Vatican on the study of Islam and its polemics against the ‘false’ faith, which was often based on incorrect presuppositions. Debates about Islam became rapidly entangled with opinions about religion in general or about Catholic doctrines and practices more specifically. In their anti-Catholic attitude the Protestant scholars even harboured some sympathy for certain aspects of Islam, although they emphasised that Muhammad should not be considered an authentic prophet. They argued for a more objective examina- tion of Islam, to be able to counter the rivalling faith more effectively. This tendency can be clearly observed in publications about Islam in the Dutch Republic in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. One may argue that the Protestant trend in Oriental studies culminated in Adriaan Reland’s famous compendium of Islamic doctrines De religione Mohammedica, which was published in 1705 and was subsequently translated into various languages. The second edition of the book, published in 1717, which was based on authentic Arabic manuscript sources, not only contained a con- cise but detailed survey of the main tenets and practices of Islam, but was also supplemented with a section in which the main European misperceptions of Islam were corrected. -

An Investigation Into the Version That Shaped European Scholarship on the Arabic Bible
Collectanea Christiana Orientalia 18 (2021): 237-259 Vevian Zaki Cataloger of Arabic Manuscripts Hill Museum and Manuscript Library Visiting Researcher Faculty of History University of Oxford The “Egyptian Vulgate” in Europe: An Investigation into the Version that Shaped European Scholarship on the Arabic Bible Introduction In the years from 1818 to 1821, August Scholz (1792–1852), a Catholic orientalist and biblical scholar, made many journeys to libraries across Europe seeking New Testament (NT) manuscripts. He wrote an account of his travels in his book Biblisch-kritische Reise, and in this book, Scholz wrote about all the NT manuscripts he encountered in each library he visited, whether they were in Greek, Latin, Syriac, or Arabic.1 What attracts the attention when it comes to the Arabic NT manuscripts is that he always compared their texts to the text of the printed edition of Erpenius.2 This edition of the Arabic NT was prepared in 1616 by Thomas Erpenius (1584-1624), the professor of Arabic studies at Leiden University—that is, two centuries before the time of Scholz. It was the first full Arabic NT to be printed in Europe, and its text was taken from Near Eastern manuscripts that will be discussed below. In 1636, he became the frst Laudian Professor of Arabic at Oxford. Before him, no regular teaching in Arabic was provided in England,1 and the Bodleian Library contained only a handful of Oriental manuscripts.2 Tere were no printed grammars or dictionaries worth the name, no native speakers to teach the lan- guage, and few printed books in Arabic.3 In this context, Pococke soon gained a considerable reputation in England and across Europe for raising the standards of orientalist scholarship and turning Oxford and its library into frst-rate institu- tions of orientalist learning. -

Seleznyov Institute for Oriental and Classical Studies Russian State University for the Humanities [email protected] THE LAMENTS OF THE PHILOSOPHERS OVER ALEXANDER THE GREAT ACCORDING TO THE BLESSED COMPENDIUM OF AL‐MAKĪN IBN AL‐ʿAMĪD The thirteenth‐century Christian Arabic historian Ğirğis al‐Makīn ibn al‐ʿAmīd — the author of the two‐volume universal history entitled The Blessed Compendium (al‐Mağmūʿ al‐mubārak) — was a rather para‐ doxical figure. Frequently defined as “a Coptic historian,”1 he was not a Copt, and even though his Blessed Compendium is well known not only in Eastern Christian and Muslim historiography, but also in Western scholarship since its inception, the first part of this historical work still remains unpublished. This first part, however, contains vast material that would undoubtedly interest scholars studying the intellectual heritage of the medieval Middle East. The following arti‐ cle deals with one section of al‐Makīn’s famous work. The Leiden Lectures on Arabic Language and Culture were initiated in 2013 on the occasion of the 400-year anniversary of the founding of the chair of Arabic at Leiden University. Introduction The purpose of this article is to survey Icelandic impressions of Scotland from the early nineteenth century to the present, as revealed in written sources.! The study cannot claim to give a complete picture of the attitude of the Icelanders in general towards Scotland and the Scots as the examination of the written sources cannot be fully comprehensive although a systematic search has been carried out and certainly most of the important pieces of written work have been found, and the views of those who did not express them in writing cannot be examined. It is, however, probable that the attitudes of Icelanders in general were to a considerable extent determined by the written accounts investigated here. The sources are of many kinds such as travelogues, memoirs, articles in newspapers and periodicals, and poetry in a few cases. It is certain that some valuable information about the subject could be found in sources that are not accessible to the author such as diaries and private letters. Generally speaking, the reliability of the sources is not to be doubted, but it is obvious that when people are writing about their impresssions a long time, even several decades after the experiences, certain inaccuracies are hard to avoid. Some of the people referred to in the article spent a relatively long time in Scotland and became very familiar with the country and the people. It is unfortunate, however, how little material can be obtained from the rather large group of Icelanders who have studied in Scotland in the last few decades. -

Zijn plan om Horatius uit te geven, bleef steken bij de commentaar op de Ars poetica en verscheen pas postuum in 1608.3 Verder toonde Torrentius zich een verdienstelijk dichter die vlot weg kon met de verschillende versmaten uit de klassieke Latijnse poëzie. De eerste druk van deze Poemata Sacra verscheen bij Plantijn in Antwerpen in 1572, maar de steeds verder aangroeiende verzameling kende nog drie uitgaven, respectievelijk in 1575, 1579 en 1594. Naast Oden aan de vrienden uit de periode dat hij in Rome verbleef en gedichten naar aanleiding van historische gebeurtenissen als de slag bij Lepanto (1571), de moord op Willem de Zwijger (1584) en de inname van Antwerpen door Alexander Farnese (1585), ging Torrentius zich van langsom meer toeleggen op religieuze onderwerpen. Toen hij in de jaren tachtig steeds meer in beslag werd genomen door zijn beroepsbezigheden als rechterhand van de Luikse prins-bisschoppen en vanaf 1587 als tweede bisschop van Antwerpen, ging dat ten koste van zijn literaire activiteiten.
