Vereniging van Antwerpse Bibliofielen, Antwerpen 2004 Zie voor verantwoording: http://www.dbnl.org/tekst/_gul005200401_01/colofon.php © 2016 dbnl i.s.m. 7 [De Gulden Passer 2004] Jeanine de Landtsheer & Marcus de Schepper De bibliotheek van Laevinus Torrentius, tweede bisschop van Antwerpen (1525-1595)* Laevinus Torrentius (Lieven vander Beke, Gent, 8 maart 1525 - Brussel, 26 april 1595) was een man met behoorlijk wat invloed op het humanistenmilieu in de Zuidelijke Nederlanden van de tweede helft van de zestiende eeuw.1 Hij verzekerde zijn naam als geleerde door een commentaar op de keizersbiografieën van de Latijnse biograaf Suetonius (ca. 70-ca. 130),2 die hij in 1592 opnieuw publiceerde in een sterk uitgebreide versie, nu aangevuld met een editie van Suetonius. Zijn plan om Horatius uit te geven, bleef steken bij de commentaar op de Ars poetica en verscheen pas postuum in 1608.3 Verder toonde Torrentius zich een verdienstelijk dichter die vlot weg kon met de verschillende versmaten uit de klassieke Latijnse poëzie. De eerste druk van deze Poemata Sacra verscheen bij Plantijn in Antwerpen in 1572, maar de steeds verder aangroeiende verzameling kende nog drie uitgaven, respectievelijk in 1575, 1579 en 1594. Naast Oden aan de vrienden uit de periode dat hij in Rome verbleef en gedichten naar aanleiding van historische gebeurtenissen als de slag bij Lepanto (1571), de moord op Willem de Zwijger (1584) en de inname van Antwerpen door Alexander Farnese (1585), ging Torrentius zich van langsom meer toeleggen op religieuze onderwerpen. Toen hij in de jaren tachtig steeds meer in beslag werd genomen door zijn beroepsbezigheden als rechterhand van de Luikse prins-bisschoppen en vanaf 1587 als tweede bisschop van Antwerpen, ging dat ten koste van zijn literaire activiteiten. Jaargang 82 gaf raad voor hun toekomst, moedigde hun voorgenomen publicaties aan en was graag bereid hen te helpen door het lenen van handschriften en drukken in zijn bezit. Een groot deel van zijn rijke collectie had hij verworven door de bibliotheek van zijn vriend, de Luikse humanist en filoloog Carolus Langius (De Langhe) aan te kopen bij diens dood in 1573. Als dank voor zijn adviezen en materiële De Gulden Passer. Jaargang 82 8 hulp stuurden een aantal auteurs hem hun werken ten geschenke of droegen ze aan hem op. Dit laatste was, bijvoorbeeld, het geval met het eerste deel van het Syntagma tragicum van de jezuïet Martinus Antonius Delrio4 en met de Statiusuitgave met commentaar van de vroeggestorven Mechelse humanist Jan Bernaerts.5 De bewaarde correspondentie van Torrentius, waarvan het grootste deel is uitgegeven door Marie Delcourt en Jean Hoyoux,6 en van tijdgenoten als Christoffel Plantijn en Justus Lipsius is heel verhelderend voor de contacten van Torrentius met het humanistenwereldje. In zijn testament bepaalde de Antwerpse bisschop dat zijn uitgebreide bibliotheek zou worden overgemaakt aan het jezuïetencollege te Leuven, waarmee hij zeker tijdens zijn laatste levensjaren nauwe banden onderhield. Vanuit zijn bekommernis om de geestelijken een degelijke opleiding te garanderen droomde hij namelijk van een soort gymnasium in samenwerking met de jezuïeten in Leuven; naast een cursus metafysica en wiskunde, wilde hij een volledige cursus filosofie organiseren. Voor de realisatie van dit project wilde hij zo'n 48.000 gulden investeren; een deel van deze som werd gedekt door de nalatenschap van zijn bibliotheek.7 Na de dood van Torrentius werd, vermoedelijk in opdracht van zijn testamentuitvoerders, een catalogus opgesteld, nu in de Koninklijke Bibliotheek van België te Brussel (Hs. 3974-3975), die echter nooit is gepubliceerd. Een voorbereidende studie hiertoe gebeurde in 1999 en diende als basis voor deze inleiding, waarvan de materiële gegevens echter grondig opnieuw werden bekeken en aangepast op grond van verdere bibliografische gegevens.8 De analyse ervan levert een verhelderend uitzicht op de belangstelling en de activiteiten van Torrentius, zowel in zijn privé-leven als beroepsmatig. 1. Zij greep naar de grote middelen en klaagde haar nood bij paus Clemens VIII, die in een breve van 22 december tussenbeide kwam in het voordeel van de universiteit. Dupont twee artikels aan de bibliotheek van Torrentius gewijd: een korte, oppervlakkige beschouwing, ‘Note sur le catalogue manuscrit de la bibliothèque de Torrentius’, Archives et Bibliothèques de Belgique - Archief- en Bibliotheekwezen in België, 43 (1972), pp. 579-587 en een bijdrage over een specifiek onderdeel, ‘La bibliothèque de e Torrentius: les livres d'un prélat humaniste du XVI siècle sur l'empire ottoman’, Gulden Passer, 50 (1972), pp. 100-123. De Gulden Passer. Jaargang 82 kwarto formaat (24 × 19 cm) en is geschreven in een hand uit de late zestiende eeuw, zonder veel versieringen en vrij goed leesbaar, met uitzondering van een aantal verbeteringen of toevoegingen tussen de regels. Na vier eeuwen zijn de overlangse vouwsporen nog steeds duidelijk zichtbaar, [afb. 1] Het eerste deel bevat de lijst van de gedrukte boeken in twee kolommen en werd door de kopiist voorzien van een paginanummer in de vrije bovenhoek (1 tot 39 en een ongenum- De Gulden Passer. Het tweede deel, met de alfabetische index van de vermelde auteurs en de catalogus van Torrentius' manuscripten, waartoe ook de geannoteerde boeken dienen gerekend, is eveneens in twee kolommen ingedeeld. In dit gedeelte heeft een recente hand in potlood een foliëring aangebracht in de rechterbovenhoek. Hierbij werd echter de ongenummerde pagina over het hoofd gezien, zodat de foliëring begint met 40, tot 52. De Catalogus librorum R[everendissi]mi D[omini] Laevini Torrentii Episcopi Antverpiensis is verdeeld in secties, naargelang de talen van de beschreven publicaties. De overgrote De Gulden Passer. Jaargang 82 10 Afb. 2. Einde van de sectie Poetae en begin van de Humanistae (Brussel, KB 3974-3975, p. 30a en b) meerderheid van de boeken is geschreven in het Latijn; daarop volgt Grieks, evenals twee werken in het Hebreeuws. Tot slot is er een kleine hoeveelheid boeken in volkstalen, respectievelijk Nederlands, Frans, Italiaans en Spaans. De Latijnse sectie werd onderverdeeld in drieëntwintig categorieën, de veel kleinere Griekse sectie in zeven onderdelen. De verschillende

Named for the famed nineteenth- century Jesuit bibliographer Carlos Sommervogel, the nso is the modern incarnation of a long and distinctive tradition of Jesuit bibliography. It harnesses the capabilities of the digital age to create a comprehensive, searchable, and open-access database cata- loging thousands of Jesuit-themed books, book chapters, articles, and book reviews. By consolidating and organizing existing scholarship on the Society of Jesus, the new resource will provide a valuable service to scholars around the world and facilitate additional development within the already dynamic and rapidly expanding field of Jesuit studies. It attracted attention across Britain and drew not just statesmen and diplomats but also soldiers, merchants, religious refugees, journalists, travellers and students into the confl ict. Hugh Dunthorne draws on pamphlet literature to reveal how British contemporaries viewed the progress of their near neigh- bours’ rebellion, and assesses the lasting impact which the Revolt and the rise of the Dutch Republic had on Britain’s domestic history. The book explores affi nities between the Dutch Revolt and the British civil wars of the seventeenth century – the fi rst major challenges to royal authority in modern times – showing how much Britain’s chang- ing commercial, religious and political culture owed to the country’s involvement with events across the North Sea. HUGH DUNTHORNE specializes in the history of the early modern period, the Dutch revolt and the Dutch republic and empire, the his- tory of war, and the Enlightenment. He was formerly Senior Lecturer in History at Swansea University, and his previous publications include The Enlightenment (1991) and The Historical Imagination in Nineteenth-Century Britain and the Low Countries

Seleznyov Institute for Oriental and Classical Studies Russian State University for the Humanities [email protected] THE LAMENTS OF THE PHILOSOPHERS OVER ALEXANDER THE GREAT ACCORDING TO THE BLESSED COMPENDIUM OF AL‐MAKĪN IBN AL‐ʿAMĪD The thirteenth‐century Christian Arabic historian Ğirğis al‐Makīn ibn al‐ʿAmīd — the author of the two‐volume universal history entitled The Blessed Compendium (al‐Mağmūʿ al‐mubārak) — was a rather para‐ doxical figure. Frequently defined as “a Coptic historian,”1 he was not a Copt, and even though his Blessed Compendium is well known not only in Eastern Christian and Muslim historiography, but also in Western scholarship since its inception, the first part of this historical work still remains unpublished. This first part, however, contains vast material that would undoubtedly interest scholars studying the intellectual heritage of the medieval Middle East. The following arti‐ cle deals with one section of al‐Makīn’s famous work.     The Leiden Lectures on Arabic Language and Culture were initiated in 2013 on the occasion of the 400-year anniversary of the founding of the chair of Arabic at Leiden University. Each year an outstanding scholar in WIT AND WISDOM IN the field is invited to present a lecture on the rich and enjoyable variety of classical Arabic texts and their significance and relevance for today’s world. CLASSICAL ARABIC LITERATURE This book contains the first three lectures delivered by Petra Sijpesteijn, James E. Montgomery and Geert Jan van Gelder. From the reasons to study Leiden Lectures on Arabic Language and Culture Arabic in the 17th century and today, to the jokes written into apparently serious scientific treatises, these three lectures together demonstrate the Petra M. Sijpesteijn, James E. Montgomery, Geert Jan van Gelder historical and cultural richness of the Arabic literary world. Petra M. Sijpesteijn, Professor of Arabic at Leiden University, obtained a PhD in Near Eastern Studies (2004) from Princeton University. She is the author of Shaping a Muslim State. The World of a Mid-Eighth-Century Egyptian Official (Oxford 2013). James Montgomery is the Sir Thomas Adams’s Professor of Arabic at Cambridge University. He is the author of Al-Jāhiz: In Praise of Books (Edinburgh 2013). Geert Jan van Gelder is emeritus Laudian Professor of Arabic at Oxford University. He is the author of Sound and Sense in Classical Arabic Poetry (Wiesbaden 2012) and Classical Arabic Literature: A Library of Arabic Literature Anthology (New York and London 2013).     ENGLISH NAVAL STRATEGY INTHE 1590s SIMÓN ADAMS Profesor de Historia de la Universidad de Strathclyde Until quite recently, the Anglo-Spanish "War" in the period after the Armada of 1588 was one of the least studied subjects of the reign of Elizabeth. For many years, the standard narrative account of the 1590s was that published by the American historian E.P. Cheyney in two volumes in 1914 and 1926 (1). In the past decade, however, this situation has been transformed. Professor Wernham's edition of the List and Analysis ofState Papers Foreign Series (2) has been followed by his detailed study of military operations and diplomacy in the years 1588-1595 (3), and then by his edition of the documents relating to the "Portugal Voyage" of 1589 (4). Within the past two years, Professor MacCaffrey has published the final volume of his trilogy on Elizabeth's reign and Professor Loades his monograph on the Tudor Navy, while Dr. Hammer has completed his dissertation on the most controversial of the political figures of the decade, the 2nd Earl of Essex (5). Much therefore is a good deal clearer than it has been. Yet wider questions remain, particularly over the manner in which Elizabeth's government conducted the war with Spain. In their most recent work both Wernham and MacCaffrey argüe from positions they have established earlier: Wernham for a careful and defensive foreign and military policy, MacCaffrey for an essentially reactive one (6). The Spanish Match and Jacobean Political Thought, 1618-1624 Kimberley Jayne Hackett Ph.D University of York History Department July 2009 Abstract Seventeenth-century English political thought was once viewed as insular and bound by a common law mentality. Significant work has been done to revise this picture and highlight the role played by continental religious resistance theory and what has been termed 'classical republicanism'. In addition to identifying these wider influences, recent work has focused upon the development of a public sphere that reveals a more socially diverse engagement with politics, authority and opposition than has hitherto been acknowledged. Yet for the period before the Civil War our understanding of the way that several intellectual influences were interacting to inform a politically alert 'public' is unclear, and expressions of political opposition are often tied to a pre-determined category of religious affiliation. As religious tension erupted into conflict on the continent, James I's pursuit ofa Spanish bride for Prince Charles and determination to follow a diplomatic solution to the war put his policy direction at odds with a dominant swathe of public opinion. During the last years of his reign, therefore, James experienced an unprecedented amount of opposition to his government of England. This opposition was articulated through a variety of media, and began to raise questions beyond the conduct of policy in addressing fundamental issues of political authority. By examining the deployment of political ideas during the domestic crisis of the early 1620s, this thesis seeks to uncover the varied ways in which differing discourses upon authority and obedience were being articulated against royal government.

Georges des Jardins, born in Alençon (Orne) on January 6, 1625, was ordained a priest in September 1649, entered the Congregation of the Mission on August 15, 1651, and took his vows on August 17, 1653. Later, he was Superior in Toul (1655-57) and Narbonne (1659). 2. Brother Jean Proust, born in Parthenay (Deux-Sèvres) on March 12, 1620, entered the Congregation of the Mission on June 25, 1645, and took his vows on October 28, 1647. Saint Vincent refers to clerical students as “Brothers.” The context usually determines whether the one referred to is a coadjutor Brother or a student destined for the priesthood. 3. Saint Vincent subscribed the initials, i.p.d.l.M. (indigne prêtre de la Mission. ) [unworthy priest of the Mission], to his signature. It has been traditional in the Congregation of the Mission to append to one’s name the Latin of this phrase, indignus sacerdos Congregationis Missionis. or the initials, i.s.C.M. The editors have adopted this traditional practice, substituting the initials of the Latin phrase for the French used by Saint Vincent.
