For this success the organizing committee is grateful to the delegates who attended with keen interest all the sessions of the Conference. The organization of a three-day national conference, with about 250 participants, requires considerable funds, and, as we all know, raising them is not a simple matter. Several institutions were addressed and their generosity allowed the organisers to meet all expenses. In this respect we really thank the Rector and the Consiglio di Amministrazione of the University of Bari, as well as other contributors: the Assessorato al Mediterraneo della Regione Puglia; the Dipartimento di Studi Anglo- Germanici e dell’Europa Orientale, the Faculty of Foreign Languages and Literatures, the Fondazione Carime. Invaluable help was offered to the organizers by the constant, competent and sympathetic support from the AIA Board in charge at the time, chaired by Marina Bondi and including Daniela Carpi, Maria Del Sapio, John Douthwaite, Alessandra Marzola and Oriana Palusci. A national conference requires a qualified and helpful team of people who are ready to work without sparing themselves. We had such team, mainly made up of people who played their backstage role perfectly and almost invisibly, granting a smooth path to the proceedings of the conference. So heartfelt thanks go to the administrative staff: Milly De Venuto, Angela Mattia and Antonio Prezioso; the Library staff: Rosa Papagna and Rosa Chiola; and the technicians: Rossella Mezzapesa and Emanuele Ponzio, so young but so experienced in their art. Highly appreciated was also the supportive cooperation of all the colleagues in the Department, while researchers and doctoral students, always ready to help in whatever problem or task, proved invaluable in their all- round efficiency. Particular gratitude is to be expressed to Mariacristina Petillo for her constant help and collaboration. In the introductory session, sadness was expressed at the deaths of John Sinclair and Bernard Hickey, and is now felt by all of us for the loss of Giorgio Melchiori and Ermanno Barisone. Though interested in different fields of research in English Studies, they all shared constant enthusiasm for their studies and intense attention to the students and the young researchers who happened, or chose, to work with them. They are, and will be, missed by all those who happened to know them. The editors CLAUDIA CORTI, VITO CAVONE, MARISTELLA TRULLI FOREWORD This volume of the Conference Proceedings collects the contributions presented in the Literature Section of the XXIII AIA Conference held in Bari (Faculty of Foreign Languages and Literatures) from 20 to 22 September 2007, whose Convenors were Vito Cavone and Maristella Trulli (internal Convenors) and Claudia Corti (external Convenor). The Conference attracted more than 250 scholars from across the country. The programme included three plenary
