März 1997 wurde der am 13. März unerwartet und plötzlich verstorbene em. Münsteraner Universitätsprofessor Dr. phil. Heinz Stoob im Beisein seiner großen Familie, zahlreicher Freunde, Kollegen und Schüler auf dem Wurtenfriedhof der Friesenkirche St. Bartholomäus in Dornum zur letzten Ruhe geleitet. Am 3. Dezember 1919 in Hamburg in eine Familie geboren, die - von Deichschlag, Marschensiedlung und Hafenbau im Stromspaltungsgebiet der Niederelbe geprägt - ihn sein Leben lang und zu einem Teil auch sein großes wissenschaftliches Werk in der niederdeutschen Welt, insbesondere des Küstenraumes, verwurzelte. Gehbehindert schon in der Kindheit und doch leidenschaftlich aufgegangen in der Jugendbewegung, machte er 1938 sein Abitur an der Oberrealschule St. Georg in Hamburg, folgten Arbeits- und Heeresdienst. Das 1942 in der Heimatstadt aufgenommene Studium der Geschichte, Philosophie und Klassischen Philologie wurde kriegsbedingt 1944 unterbrochen, 1946 fort­ gesetzt - was auch selbst Hand anlegen beim Wiederaufbau der Universi­ tätsgebäude bedeutete - und 1930 mit der Dissertation „Die dithmarsischen Geschlechterverbände. Grundfragen der Siedlungs- und Rechtsgeschichte in den Nordseemarschen“ (Heide 1951) abgeschlossen. Sein Lehrer Hermann Aubin hatte ihn in die „Kulturraumforschung“ eingeführt, die von Kennern heute als Diskussionsfrage einer vergleichen­ den Landes- und Städtegeschichte wegen ihrer fächerzusammenführenden Methoden als wegweisend - gleichbedeutend den „Annales“ und den Sozialwissenschaften - und als mitverantwortlich für den hohen Standard deutscher Geschichtswissenschaft in der Gegenwart eingeschätzt wird, im Zuge der Aufdeckung allgemeiner Belastungen der Geschichtswissenschaft in der NS-Zeit aber auch manchesmal vorschnell in Teilen der Öffentlich­ keit mißverstanden und mißdeutet wird. Wenigstens Historiker lernen von Beginn ihres Studiums an, zwischen Methoden und Theorien, zwischen Personen und Forschungsaufgaben zu unterscheiden und Ergebnisse nach den Kategorien von Gesellschaft, Zeit und Raum unter Nutzung aller möglichen schriftlichen, gegenständlichen, aber auch fiktiven, ideenge­ schichtlichen und rituellen Quellen zu beurteilen, - wohlwissend, daß eine Forschungsfragc auch das Ergebnis beeinflußt, daß andere Forscher unter anderen Verhältnissen zu anderen Ergebnissen kommen können, daß das VI Nachruf auf Heinz Stoob Erkennen historischer Wirklichkeit immer nur eine Annäherung erlaubt und oft ebensoviel zur eigenen Befindlichkeit aussagt. Heinz Stoob jedenfalls ging mit Thesen an die Quellenarbeit und ließ sich dann von der Arbeit an den Quellen weiterführen, um am Ende durchaus die Ausgangsthese zu falsifizieren, mindestens zu modifizieren. Seine Schüler in Hamburg und dann auch seit 1964 in Münster hat er oft genug mit seiner historisch-kritischen Quellenarbeit beeindruckt und unter Druck gesetzt. Unter dem 21. März gedachten mittelalterliche Christen zwischen Rhein und Weichsel jener Riche(n)za in der Gemeinschaft der Seligen, die als Nichte Kaiser Ottos III. und Tochter des lothringischen Pfalzgrafen Ezzo nach dem Tod ihres Mannes Miezko II. 1031 die eben christlich gewordene neue Heimat in Polen verlassen mußte und im thüringischen Saalfeld bis zu ihrem Tode (1063) drei Jahrzehnte residierte. Sie stiftete für das Familien­ kloster in Brauweiler, gründete in Saalfeld einen Reformkonvent als Seel­ gerät; beigesetzt wurde sie von Erzbischof Anno in der aus ihren Mitteln gestifteten Kirche Maria ad gradus auf der Rheinseite des Kölner Doms. Ihren Namen trug wieder eine ezzonische Nichte, die nacheinander mit den Führern des westfälischen und ostfälischen Adels, Hermann von Werl und Otto von Northeim, verheiratet war. Die westfälische Ehe brachte auch friesische Rechte und Ansprüche in die sächsische Opposition gegen Heinrich IV.; schließlich leitete ein Aufstand der Friesen die Niederlage des letzten Saliers ein, was zugleich die endgültige Durchsetzung jenes sächsi­ schen Herzogs bedeutete, der - mit einer dritten Richenza und Enkelin der Ezzonin verheiratet - als Lothar III. 1125 zum deutschen König aufstieg. Die drei Richenzen stehen für ein Programm, das Heinz Stoob treffend am Beispiel der drei Gertruden desselben Verwandtenkreises herausgearbeitet hat: Reichs-, Adels- und Reformbewußtsein des alten Sachsens, dessen Adelsfamilien von den Kernlanden um den Harz personale, institutionelle und mentale Verbindungen an die Küste, in die Rheinlande und nach Oberdeutschland, aber auch zu den Slawen geknüpft hatten und jene Kräfte binden konnten, die immer bereit waren, das salische Königtum an den von den Ottonen gesetzten Maßstäben zu messen. Die drei Richenzen, - oder um bei seinen Beispielen zu bleiben - die drei Gertruden, Lothar, Brun von Olmütz, Rudolf von Habsburg, Karl IV. verkörperten den Zugriff des Lehrers und Forschers Stoob auf die Geschichte, immer personal und individuell. An Gestalten, bald auch an Stadtschicksalen wie denen von Lübeck, Goslar, Schleswig, Hamburg oder Dortmund, Marsberg und Blankenrode begriff er Geschichte und vermittelte sie. Strukturelle Fragen waren ihm selbstverständlich, blieben aber meistens nur eine Folie, über die Träger und Leitfragen der Geschichte gezeichnet wurden. Vieles davon war bereits in der

    Tette Hofstra Changing views on Vikings n this article1 changing views, not only of Viking activities, but also of the etymology and meaning of the word viking will be I discussed. Particular attention will be paid to the Netherlands. Outside Scandinavia, post-mediaeval interest in Old Scandinavian culture including Vikings arose in England at the end of the seventeenth century and France in the middle of the eighteenth century. Other countries followed suit, and this ultimately led to the incorporation of the word viking into Modern Dutch. The Modern Dutch word viking (also vikinger, wiking, wikinger) was introduced from German or English;2 the earliest entry in the Woordenboek der Nederlandsche Taal, the large Dictionary of the Dutch Language, is from the year 1835. Box 1346 Ann Arbor, Ml 48106-1346 ABSTRACT DEVIANT BURIALS IN VIKING-AGE SCANDINAVIA The thesis brings together information yielded from archaeology and other sources to provide an overall picture of the types of burial practices encountered during the Viking-Age in Scandinavia. From this, an attempt is made to establish deviancy. Comparative evidence, such as literary, runic, legal and folkloric evidence will be used critically to shed perspective on burial practices and the artefacts found within the graves. The thesis will mostly cover burials from the Viking Age (late 8th century to the mid- 11th century), but where the comparative evidence dates from other periods, its validity is discussed accordingly. Two types of deviant burial emerged: the criminal and the victim. A third type, which shows distinctive irregularity yet lacks deviancy, is the healer/witch burial.

Tochilova The Novgorod archaeological collection of wooden items includes a significant amount of pieces of decorative art. Many of these were featured in the fundamental work of B.A. Kolchin Novgorod Antiquities. The Carved Wood (Kolchin 1971). This work is, perhaps, the one generalizing study capable of providing a full picture of the art of carved wood of Ancient Novgorod. Studying the archaeological collec- tions of Ancient Novgorod, one’s attention is drawn to a number of wooden (and bone) objects, the art design of which distinctly differs from the general conceptions of ancient Russian art. The most striking examples of such works of applied art will be discussed in this article. The processes of interaction between the two cultures are well researched and presented in the works of a group of Swedish archaeologists, whose work showed the complex bonds of interaction between Sweden and Russia, reflected in a number of aspects of material culture (Arbman 1960; Jansson 1996; Fransson et al (eds.) 2007; Hedenstierna- Jonson 2009). Moreover, in art history literature, a few individ- ual works of applied art refer to the context of the spread of Viking art (Roesdahl & Wilson eds 1992; Graham-Campbell 2013), but not to the interrelation, as a definite branch of Scandinavian art, in Eastern Europe. If we apply this focus to Russian historiography, then the problem of studying archaeological objects of applied art is comparatively small, and what is important to note is that all of these studies also have an archaeological direction (Kolchin 1971; Bocharov 1983).

Whether human, deities, or some other type of species, the shape-shifter can be categorized as an ambiguous and fluid figure who breaks down many typical societal borderlines including those relating to gender, biology, animal/ human, and sexual orientation. As a whole, this research project seeks to better understand the background, nature, and identity of these figures, in part by approaching the subject psychoanalytically, more specifically within the framework established by the Swiss psychoanalyst, Carl Jung, as part of his theory of archetypes.

Photo Dan Carlsson Harbours and trading in the Baltic Sea during the Viking Age - an introduction In our interpretation of prehistory we are highly influenced by the material we see in the landscape or by coincidences found during archaeological surveys, and we forget or neglect to take into account the hidden cultural landscape. This is particularly true when it comes to prehistory in Sweden. As we completely lack written sources before the 12th century (with the exception of runic inscriptions) we have to rely on archaeological field material. An example of this problem is the question of Viking Age trade and its associated port activities. Extensive Viking material from Gotland suggests that the island had a lively exchange with the surrounding regions at that time in its history. This is reflected in the existence of numerous silver hoards; no area in northern Europe has such a con- centration of silver from the Viking Age as Gotland. There are clear signs of an extensive and lively Staraya Sigtuna trade and exchange (or piracy, as Ladoga Birka some would argue), which in turn Kaupang required docking points, ports

It is situated in the federal state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and part of the district of Vorpommern- Rügen. No town or village on the island is more than 7 kilometres away from the coast. The first settlers arrived on the island during the Stone Age, around 10,000 years ago. Later, under Slavic rule, Rügen gained in importance as a trading hub and a cult site. The roots of Rügen’s tourism can be found in Sagard, where pastor Willich opened the first bathing and recreation facility in 1795. In 1817/18, the Goor region near the village of Lauterbach became the location of a public bath, built by order of Wilhelm Malte I, Prince of Putbus. Gradually, fishing and farming villages at the Baltic Sea coast developed into bathing and health resorts. Located in the Jasmund National Park, Germany’s smallest national park, the chalk cliffs are among the most impressive landmarks of the island. In 2011, the "Old Beech Forest" was added to the UNESCO World Heritage list. Other unique nature reserves include the Western Pomerania Lagoon Area National Park and the Southeast Rügen Biosphere Reserve including the Mönchgut peninsula and the island of Vilm.
