Whether human, deities, or some other type of species, the shape-shifter can be categorized as an ambiguous and fluid figure who breaks down many typical societal borderlines including those relating to gender, biology, animal/ human, and sexual orientation. As a whole, this research project seeks to better understand the background, nature, and identity of these figures, in part by approaching the subject psychoanalytically, more specifically within the framework established by the Swiss psychoanalyst, Carl Jung, as part of his theory of archetypes. This project includes, among other things, a critical examination of the extant archaeological and Icelandic literary sources (as well as other works such as Historia Norwegiæ and Gesta Danorum) relating to shape-shifting as a means of analyzing the concept of Old Norse animal shape-shifting, and earlier understandings of human/ animal relationships as a whole, noting how this motif seems to have been perceived by Scandinavian society over time. In short, the thesis aims to understand the “inner mechanics” of shape-shifting and why these figures later came to be demonized, exiled, and persecuted in Scandinavian society. Útdráttur Að hitta skrímslið í skóginum: Hamskipti, sjálfsmynd og útlegð í fornnorrænum trúarbrögðunum og heimspeki Þessi ritgerð er rannsókn á hamskiptum í fornnorrænni menningu þar sem meðal annars er fjallað um skyld hugtök hamr, hugr og fylgjur (og tilbrigði við þessi hugtök) sem og hvernig formbreytingar virðast vera í tengslum við náttúruna, útlegð, siðleysi og ofbeldi. Hvort sem það er mannkyn, guðdómur eða önnur tegund af veru, þá er hægt að flokka hamskiptinginn sem tvíræða og breytilega veru sem brýtur niður margar dæmigerðar samfélagslegar ímyndir, þar á meðal þær sem tengjast kyni, líffræði, dýrum/ mönnum og kynhneigð. Í heild sinni leitast þetta rannsóknarverkefni við að skilja betur bakgrunn, eðli og sjálfsmynd þessara vera, að hluta til með því að nálgast viðfangsefnið frá sjónarhorni sálfræðinnar, nánar tiltekið innan þess ramma sem svissneski sálfræðingurinn Carl Jung setti upp sem hluta af kenningu sinni um erkitýpur. Þetta verkefni felur meðal annars í sér gagnrýna athugun á fornleifafræðilegum og íslenskum bókmenntaheimildum (sem og öðrum verkum eins og Historia Norwegiæ og Gesta Danorum) varðandi formbreytingu sem leið til að greina fornnorræn hamskipti og fyrri skilning á samskiptum manna/ dýra í heild sinni, og vekja athygli á því hvernig þetta mótíf virðist hafa verið álitið í skandinavísku samfélagi í gegnum tíðina. Í stuttu máli miðar ritgerðin að því að skilja „innri vélfræði“ lögunarbreytinga og hvers vegna þessar verur urðu síðar dæmdar, útlægar og ofsóttar í skandinavísku samfélagi. Abstract It is generally agreed that some numbers such as three and nine which appear frequently in the two Eddas hold special significances in Norse mythology. Furthermore, numbers appearing in sagas not only denote factual quantity, but also stand for specific symbolic meanings. This tradition of number symbolism could be traced to Pythagorean thought and to St. Augustine‟s writings. But the result in Old Norse literature is its own system influenced both by Nordic beliefs and Christianity. This double influence complicates the intertextuality in the light of which the symbolic meanings of numbers should be interpreted.

    ESUKA – JEFUL 2014, 5–1: 13–26 PERSONAL NAMES AND DENOMINATION OF LIVONIANS IN EARLY WRITTEN SOURCES Enn Ernits Estonian University of Life Sciences Abstract. This paper presents the timeline of ethnonyms denoting Livonians; specifies their chronology; and analyses the names used for this ethnos and possible personal names. If we consider the dating of the event, the earliest sources mentioning Livonians are Gesta Danorum and the Tale of Bygone Years (both 10th century), but both sources present rather dubious information: in the first the battle of Bråvalla itself or the date are dubious (6th, 8th or 10th century); in the latter we cannot be sure that the member of the Rus delegation was really a Livonian. If we consider the time of recording, the earliest sources are two rune inscriptions from Sweden (11th century), and the next is the list of neighbouring peoples of the Russians from the Tale of Bygone Years (12th century). The personal names Bicco and Ger referred in Gesta Danorum, and Либи Аръфастовъ in Tale of Bygone Years are very problematic. The first certain personal name of a Livonian is *Mustakka, *Mustukka or *Mustoikka (from Finnic *musta ‘black’) written in 1040–1050s on a strip of birch bark in Novgorod. It seeks to establish the relationship of the various valkyrja reflexes of the culture under study with other supernatural females (particularly the dísir) through the close and careful examination of primary source material, thereby proposing a new model of base supernatural femininity for the late Iron Age. The study then goes on to examine how the valkyrjur themselves deviate from this ground state, interrogating various aspects and features associated with them in skaldic, Eddic, prose and iconographic source material as seen through the lens of the hall-based warrior elite, before presenting a new understanding of valkyrja phenomena in this social context: that valkyrjur were used as instruments to propagate the pre-existing social structures of the culture that created and maintained them throughout the late Iron Age.

The over-aged Danish king Harald Hildetand finally lost his life, and CONSIDERA­ his nephew king Sigurdr hringr won Denmark TION TO THE for the Swedes. The story appears in a fragment CURONIANS of a Norse saga from around 1300. But since Sa­ xo Grammaticus tells it, the written tradition Nils Blornkvist must go back at least to the late 12th century. Wri­ ting in Latin he prefers to call it bellum Suetici, 'the Swedish war'. It's for several reasons ob­ vious that Saxo has built his text on a Norse text that must have been quite similar to the preser­ ved fragment. The battle of Bravellir- the Norse fragment claims - was noteworthy in ancient tales for having be­ en the greatest, the hardest and the most even and uncertain of the wars that had been fought in the Nordic countries.1 Both sources give long lists of the famous heroes that joined the two armies in a way that recalls the list of ships in Homer's Iliad. These champions are the knight­ errants of Germanic epics, to some degree rela­ ted with those of chansons de geste. They are pre­ sented with characteristic epithets and eponyms that point out their origins in a town, a tribe or a country. When summed up they communicate a geographic vision of the northern World in the 11 th and 12th centuries.

From this, an attempt is made to establish deviancy. Comparative evidence, such as literary, runic, legal and folkloric evidence will be used critically to shed perspective on burial practices and the artefacts found within the graves. The thesis will mostly cover burials from the Viking Age (late 8th century to the mid- 11th century), but where the comparative evidence dates from other periods, its validity is discussed accordingly. Two types of deviant burial emerged: the criminal and the victim. A third type, which shows distinctive irregularity yet lacks deviancy, is the healer/witch burial.

    Trees as a Central Theme in Norse Mythology and Culture An Archaeological Perspective AMANDA GILMORE ABSTRACT: This article, the inaugural winner of the journal’s Gurli Aagaard Woods Undergraduate Publication Award, combines the analysis of ancient literature with an archaeological approach in an effort to further interpret the presence and significance of trees in medieval Scandinavian culture. The analysis of textual references to trees such as Yggdrasill and Barnstokkr found in the Norse works Völuspá, Grímnismál, Gylfaginning, and Völsunga Saga, are combined with academic articles, juxtaposed with the examination of archaeological sites at Fröso, Herresta, Bjarsgård, Österfärnebo, and Karmøy, and integrated with modern Scandinavian attitudes to explore an interest in tree-human relationships, literature, and archaeology in medieval Scandinavia. RÉSUMÉ : Cet article, premier lauréat du prix de la revue Gurli Aagaard Woods de publication pour étudiant de premier cycle, combine l’analyse d’une littérature ancienne avec une approche archéologique, dans un effort pour interpréter davantage la présence et l’importance des arbres dans la culture scandinave médiévale. Les analyses des références textuelles à des arbres tels que Yggdrasill et Barnstokkr trouvées dans les travaux Norse Völuspá, Grímnismál, Gylfaginning et la saga Völsunga, sont combinées à des articles académiques, juxtaposées à l’examen de sites archéologiques à Frösö, Herresta, Bjarsgård, Österfärnebo et Karmøy, et intégrées à des attitudes scandinaves modernes afin d’explorer un intérêt envers les relations arbre-humain, la littérature et l’archéologie en Scandinavie médiévale.
