THE SYNAGOGUE OF SATAN BY MAXIMILIAN J. RUDWIN THE Synagogue of Satan is of greater antiquity and potency than the Church of God. The fear of a mahgn being was earher in operation and more powerful in its appeal among primitive peoples than the love of a benign being. Fear, it should be re- membered, was the first incentive of religious worship. Propitiation of harmful powers was the first phase of all sacrificial rites. This is perhaps the meaning of the old Gnostic tradition that when Solomon was summoned from his tomb and asked, "Who first named the name of God?" he answered, "The Devil." Furthermore, every religion that preceded Christianity was a form of devil-worship in the eyes of the new faith. The early Christians actually believed that all pagans were devil-worshippers inasmuch as all pagan gods were in Christian eyes disguised demons who caused themselves to be adored under different names in dif- ferent countries. It was believed that the spirits of hell took the form of idols, working through them, as St. Thomas Aquinas said, certain marvels w'hich excited the wonder and admiration of their worshippers (Siiinina theologica n.ii.94). This viewpoint was not confined to the Christians. It has ever been a custom among men to send to the Devil all who do not belong to their own particular caste, class or cult. Each nation or religion has always claimed the Deity for itself and assigned the Devil to other nations and religions. Zoroaster described alien M^orshippers as children of the Divas, which, in biblical parlance, is equivalent to sons of Belial. -

Whether human, deities, or some other type of species, the shape-shifter can be categorized as an ambiguous and fluid figure who breaks down many typical societal borderlines including those relating to gender, biology, animal/ human, and sexual orientation. As a whole, this research project seeks to better understand the background, nature, and identity of these figures, in part by approaching the subject psychoanalytically, more specifically within the framework established by the Swiss psychoanalyst, Carl Jung, as part of his theory of archetypes. -

Tacitus, Germania, 98 CE As to the Germans themselves, I think it probable that they are Tacitus was probably born in 56 or 57 CE in Northern Italy into an indigenous and that very little foreign blood has been introduced either by equestrian (minor noble) family. He had quite a successful career in invasions or by friendly dealings with neighbouring peoples. For in former Roman public service, holding both military and civil offices, culminating in becoming the proconsul of the Roman province of Asia, 112-113 CE. He times it was not by land but on shipboard that would-be immigrants wrote a several literary and historical works, many of which criticize faults arrived; and the limitless ocean that lies beyond the coasts of Germany, and in Roman society by comparing them to others. Some Greek Evidence for Indo-European Youth Contingents of Shape Shifters Reyes Bertolín Cebrián University of Calgary [email protected] Artistic evidence, legends and anecdotes in Greece seem to reflect very archaic ways of fighting, remnants of IE youth contingents covered in skins, lightly armed, and inspiring terror. Although these troops had largely disappeared from the written sources in archaic and classical times, there are enough indications to suggest that they operated past Iliadic times, even if they were no longer well understood. Shape shifting warriors are known from several IE cultures. Scholars assume that there were probably two types of shape shifters. On the one hand there was a “consecrated” warrior,1 and on the other hand there were contingents of young adolescent men, who fought for a period of time as shape shifters before they were integrated into the productive structure of their societies (Kershaw 2000: 63). In a seminal work, Kim McCone identified the contingents of young marauding men in several IE cultures. He established a distinction between them and the organized troops of property owning citizens (*teutá) (McCone 1987: 111). These young men gathered in the so-called IE *koryos. Members of the *koryos spent their time in the theft of cattle and women, activities which constitute the themes of most IE epics. Possible traces of these young men and their paraphernalia are found in the Iliad in the “long-haired” Acheans, the 1The best examples for the two separate groups of shape-changing warriors come probably from Tacitus’ Germania. This article suggests that the modern notion of the ‘Hunt’ was created by Jacob Grimm, who conflated different medieval traditions with modern folklore. It further argues that a different approach to the study of medieval spirit processions, which confines itself to medieval and early modern sources and distinguishes between the types of procession described in them, results in different conclusions, with regard both to the character of the ‘Hunt’ and to its relationship with the sabbath. Introduction ‘In German and Celtic legend, the Wild Hunt consisted of a band of ghosts or spirits who would ride through the night. -

The Wild Hunt Chris Wood The image we have today of the Wild Hunt is of a spectral or otherworldly phenomenon that manifests on a stormy night in mid-winter, and sometimes at other, liminal times of year, as the seasons change and the veil between the worlds is at its thinnest. Great hosts of ghostly or faery riders, with red-eyed or red-eared hell-hounds baying, sweep all those unfortunate to be in their path before them, never to be seen again. If you see the Hunt pass by, it may betoken death or disaster. For those brave enough, it is possible to ride with them, but this requires preparation and is not to be undertaken lightly. The Midwinter Wild Hunt can also be seen as the untamed forces of Nature bringing in the Cleansing Tide of the year, sweeping out all that is unwanted or undesirable, clearing the way to allow new life to spring forth after the Equinox, in the Growing Tide. This fearful procession is led by various mythical or legendary personages: Arthur, Ođinn, Charles the Great, Herne the Hunter or Welsh psychopomp, Gwynn ap Nydd, or sometimes Hecate or Diana, gathering up souls to ride in their army of the dead. But some of these, it transpires, are very recent additions to the cast. Herne was introduced by William Harrison Ainsworth, in Windsor Castle, published as a novel in 1843, and Gwynn seems to have been inserted by Sir John Rhys in 1901. -

I contend that in both texts, fairies become intimately associated with conceptions of the ancient British past, and, more narrowly, with the idea of a specifically insular kingship that seeks its legitimization within that past. In Chapter One, I argue that Map’s longer version of the Herla narrative is his own synthesis of traditional materials, intended to highlight the continuity of a notion of British kingship that includes the pygmy king, Herla and Henry II. -
