As a result of reconstruction of relationships of genera of Donaciinae, I found that Poecilocera would have to be resurrected from synonymy with Sominella. Therefore, I redescribe Poecilocera and its single included member, beJ.ow. The name Poecilocera r¡as first proposed for a subgenus of Donacia (sensu Iato) by Schaeffer (1919) to accommodate a single Nearctic species, Ðonacia harrisii teConte. As Schaeffer observed, this species possesses character states similar !o Plateumaris, bul also to Donacia. The name Plateumaris had not yet achieved common use as a genus name among North Ànerican coleopterists by the time Schaeffer revised lhe Nearctic Donaciinae ('1919, 1925). Thus, PoeciLocera !ras not recognized as a genus either. Goecke (1931) was the first and last author to examine the generic assignment of Ðqgg-¿ê b.I¡!-E ij-, and transferred it to the genus SomineIIa on the basis of gross similarity and anlennomere proportion. Marx (1957) followed Schaeffer (1925) and considered Poecilocera a subgenus of Donãcia, while Monrós (1959) considered SoninelLa (including Q, harrisii) a subgenus of Plateumaris. Recent authors (g.g. Jolivet 1970, Borowiec 1984), reLained genus status of SominelLa, !¡ith q, harrisii placed in it. 5.,l, ELEvÀrroN 0F E9EC!_L9SEBÀ T0 GENUS STÀrUS. Àdult specimens of Poecilocera are characterized primarily by plesiomorphic character statesi smaÌ1 eyes, undeveloped vertexal calli, lack of pubescence on pronotal hypomeron, rounded elytral apices (or apex depressed, and therefore appearing emarginate), robust, tapering tegmen, lack of subbasal angulation of median lobe, teeth of mandibles approximate, and mesosternal process narroli. 436 Àdul! specimens of Somínella also share most of these plesiomorphic states, but shape of elytral apex and hypomeral pubescence vary; the tegmen is slender, and mandible with apical leeth a littIe divergent, These charac!er states are derived in relation to the states possessed by Poecilocera (and Plateumaris), and are shared with other genera of Donaciini and the Haemoniini. Àddi!ionaIly, specimens of P. harrisii have a slightly developed hyporneral pubescent area, which I consider tentaLively a s!ate intermediate beLween tha! shorln by Plateumaris and mosl of the Donaciini and Haemoniini. Ànong lhe species placed in Sominella, a variety of states occur; specimens of !. Ionqicornis lack hypomeral pubescence; those of S. reticulata have only a very few inconspicuous selae and could be equally considered as lacking, or having poorly deveJ.oped, hyponeral pubescence; specimens of !. macrocnenia are much like those of !. harrisii in this character, while those of !. kraatzi have hypomeral pubescence f ulJ.y developed, as in other Donaciini. t argued (Àskevotd 1988) that this character may have been important in donaciine evo).ution, its presence being apomorphic (but Iosl independently in the ancestor !o Macroplea). General simiJ.arity in body form and appearance would lead to the conclusion that they are congeneric: smaIl eyes, antennomere 3 equal to or Longer than 4, coarse but sparse transverse rugae on elytra, and apical teeth of mandibles approximate in ESÊ_çj_l_99ge., only a little divergenl in Sominella, Specimens of f,. Ionqicornis have the apical sutural interval somewhat 43'1 narrowed, similar to that of E, hg¡iSj¿ and members of PLateumaris, but this is not shared by specinens of !. macrocnemia or the trvo other species I tenLatively place in the genus. Character staLes possessed by members of Sominelìa therefore constitute a mosaic of plesiomorphic and derived states. Derived shates suggest placement in Donaciini + HaeÍìoniini, while !he plesiomorphic states shorl affinity to lhe Plateumarini. Plesiomorphies cannot be used to reconstruct relationships (ttennig 1966, Kavanaugh 1972), so despite subs!antial similarity of !. harrisii to members of Sominella, I cannot consider them contribal or congeneric. Retention of P, harrisii in Sominella would render the Latter paraphyleLic, Therefore, I remove B. harrisii from !cm:!nglle and place it in a monobasic Aenus, for which the name !99q!.!9çg¡g was made available by Schaeffer (1919). 5.2, TREÀTHENT OF POECITOCERÀ. T'N']USTIFIED E}ÍENDÀTION TÏPE SPECIES. Donacia harrisii Leconte, 1851, by monotypy. ETYI.{oEoGy. Not stated by Schaeffer. The name could be based on the Greek poecil, meaning variegated or coLoured, and keras, neaning horns 438 (or antennae) (Jaeger 1955). This rnay be the meaning Schaeffer intended, but such characlers are not at aLL distinctive among donaciines. DIÀGNoSIS. The holotype female bears the Iabels: " lpink disc] 9, type #4244 lreð1, D. Harrisi i. " 439 Infornation about typei The single specimen of Donacia harrisii in the Leconte Collection is the holofype. TYPE LoCÀLITY. The LeConte pink disc indicates "Middle States, N.Y.", although LeConte s!ales "Penn. rarissime". ETYI'!oLoGY. Evidently named after ?.I.l. Harris, fron whom Leconte states he oblained the specimen under the manuscript name !. inermis Harris. TÀXONO!íI C HISTORY. Poecilocera harrisii has been long recognized by authors, there being no taxon with which to confuse it, although the Donacia harrisi Isic] that Blatchley (1910) recognized was subsequently described by Schaeffer (1925) as q. (Plateumaris) diversa. Ðonacia harrisii became emended to D, harrisi, it seems first by Jacoby and Cìavareau (1904), and has been spelted as such since. Schaeffer recognized thaf Ð. harrisii

Bayer2 and H. Jane Brockmann3 We became interested in aquatic weevils (Curculionidae) and leaf beetles (Chryso- melidae) during the Aquatic Entomology Course at the University of Wisconsin, in the spring of 1971. Many collections, taken from a variety of aquatic habitats in Wisconsin, contained weevils and leaf beetles. Most of the species were not fully treated in the keys found in aquatic entomology texts. We thought it would be useful to compile keys from the literature and present what is known of the distribution of these insects in Wisconsin. Nine species of weevils have been found in aquatic habitats in Wisconsin, representing seven genera, all belonging to the subtribe Hydronomi, and twenty-five species of leaf beetles, representing five genera in three subfamilies.

S0N 1N0 Introduction A checklist of the beetles of Canada (Bousquet 1991) was published 20 years ago in order to provide a list of the species known from Canada and Alaska along with their correct names and a indication of their distribution by major political units (provinces, territories and state). A total of 7447 species and subspecies were recognized in this work. British Columbia and Ontario had the most diverse faunas, 3628 and 3843 taxa respectively, whereas Saskatchewan had a relatively poor fauna (1673 taxa) which was about two thirds that its neighbouring provinces (Alberta – 2464; Manitoba – 2351). This raises the question of whether the Canadian beetle fauna is distributed like a doughnut with a hole in the middle, or is there some other explanation. After assembling available literature records as well as the collection records available to us, we present a list of 2312 species (generally only single subspecies of a species are recognized in the province) suggesting that the Canadian distribution pattern of species is more like that of a Bismark, the dough may be a little thinner in the center but there is also a core of good things. This list was largely R. Hopper’s project. He collected Saskatchewan insects since at least the 1960’s and over the last decade before his death he had compiled a list of the species he had collected along with other records from the literature or given him by other collectors (Hooper 2001).

The pattern of postglacial re-colonization of Europe and the present population structure are known for various plant and animal species. The reed beetle Macroplea mutica (Fabricius, 1792) has characteristics that should influence both aspects in a pecu- liar way and therefore complement the currently known scenarios: It is fully aquatic but cannot swim or fly. Samples from 25 Euro- pean populations of M. mutica and five specimens from China were investigated using amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP, 251 loci). Assessment of error rates associated with this method showed that the data set contains a strong population genetic signal. As hypothesized pronounced population differentiation and signs of inbreeding were found. Italian populations are clearly differentiated from northern populations (and from each other), which underlines the role of the Alps as a major barrier. Specimens from Lake Balaton (Hungary) show some affiliation with the populations in the Baltic Sea, which are all relatively similar. Popula- tions from the eastern part of Northern Germany are similar to the Baltic populations, while those from the western part are allied to the British populations.

Askevold' Department of Entomology University of Manitoba Winnipeg, Manitoba R3T 2N2 Quaestiones Entomologicae CANADA 26: 601- 664 1990 ABSTRACT Based on phylogenetic analysis of genera of Donaciinae, three tribes of Donaciinae are recognized: Plateumarini, new tribe, Donaciini Kirby and Haemoniini Chen. All described genus- and species-group taxa are placed within this tribal classification, except Donacia microcephala Daniel and Daniel (uncertain generic assignment in Donaciini) and Neohaemonia voronovae Medvedev (uncertain generic assignment in Haemoniini). Poeciiocera Schaeffer is removed from synonymy with Sominella Jacobson and includes a single Nearctic species, P. harrisii (LeConte). Prodonacia Chen and Donaciocrioceris Pic (both monobasic) are newly placed as junior subjective synonyms of Donaciasta Fairmaire. Donacia (Donaciomima) Medvedev is removed from synonymy with Donacia, and is recognized as a valid subgenus, including most species hitherto placed in Donacia s. str. (i.e., 22 Nearctic and 52 Palaearctic species). The fossil genus Hemidonacia Haupt is placed as junior subjective synonym of Donacia (Cyphogaster) Goecke; Eodonacia Haupt is placed as junior subjective synonym of Donacia (s. str.) Fabricius. Donaciella Reitter is elevated to generic status, with the Nearctic species Donacia pubicollis Sujfrian and Palaearctic species Donacia clavipes Fabricius, Donacia cinera Herbst, and Donacia tomentosa Ahrens transferred to this genus.

Abstract Two new species of the aquatic leaf beetle genus Macroplea Samouelle namely M. ranina Lou & Yu, sp. nov. and M. huaxiensis Lou & Liang, sp. nov. are described from China. Macroplea appendiculata (Panzer, 1794) is recorded for the first time from China and a key to all known species of Macroplea is provided. Introduction Macroplea Samouelle, 1819, a Palaearctic leaf beetle genus of the aquatic subfamily Donaciinae, is represented by five species, namely M. mutica (Fabricius, 1792), M. appendiculata (Panzer, 1794), M. pubipennis (Reuter, 1875), M. japana (Jacoby, 1885), and M. skomorokhovi Medvedev, 2006. This genus is known to occur in Europe, Alge- ria, Middle Asia, Siberia, Far East, China and Japan (Monrós, 1959; Gressitt & Kimotto, 1961; Jolivet, 1970; Borowiec, 1984; Lopatin, 1984; Kimoto & Takizawa, 1994; Hayashi & Shiyake, 2001; Kölsch et al., 2006; Mende et al., 2010; Silfverberg, 2010).

    AN ANNOTATED LIST OF NEARCTIC DONACIINAE (COLEOPTERA: CHRYSOMELIDAE): THE GENERIC CLASSIFICATION AND TYPE SPECIMENS OF THE NEW WORLD SPECIES. BY INGOLF S. ASKEVOLD Department of Entomology, University of Manitoba, Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada R3T 2N21 INTRODUCTION During systematic revision of Nearctic donaciines, the majority of type specimens were examined. Some lectotype and neotype designations, made where necessary in the context of revisions of genera (Plateumaris Thomson and Neohaemonia Sz6kessy) or solution of specific taxonomic problems, were detailed elsewhere (Askevold 1987a,b, 1988, 1990, 1991). Some taxonomic problems remain despite relatively recent treatment by Marx (1957) of Donacia F. (sensu lato). I indicated earlier that Donacia is repre- sented in North America by 10 species in Donacia (s. str.), and 21 described species in Donacia (Donaciomima) Medvedev, but details were not given then (Askevold 1990). The purpose of the present paper is to detail remaining lectotype designations among Nearctic members of the genus Donacia F., to list the Nearctic members of Donaciinae, and to detail relevant tax- onomic references and information (i.e., synonymies, taxonomic changes since prior authors, and data about type specimens). Schaeffer (1919, 1925) indicated only if he based his species on a type and allotype, but not that there were also many paratypes; paratype information is included insofar as such specimens have been found.
