Bayer2 and H. Jane Brockmann3 We became interested in aquatic weevils (Curculionidae) and leaf beetles (Chryso- melidae) during the Aquatic Entomology Course at the University of Wisconsin, in the spring of 1971. Many collections, taken from a variety of aquatic habitats in Wisconsin, contained weevils and leaf beetles. Most of the species were not fully treated in the keys found in aquatic entomology texts. We thought it would be useful to compile keys from the literature and present what is known of the distribution of these insects in Wisconsin. Nine species of weevils have been found in aquatic habitats in Wisconsin, representing seven genera, all belonging to the subtribe Hydronomi, and twenty-five species of leaf beetles, representing five genera in three subfamilies. -

S0N 1N0 Introduction A checklist of the beetles of Canada (Bousquet 1991) was published 20 years ago in order to provide a list of the species known from Canada and Alaska along with their correct names and a indication of their distribution by major political units (provinces, territories and state). A total of 7447 species and subspecies were recognized in this work. British Columbia and Ontario had the most diverse faunas, 3628 and 3843 taxa respectively, whereas Saskatchewan had a relatively poor fauna (1673 taxa) which was about two thirds that its neighbouring provinces (Alberta – 2464; Manitoba – 2351). This raises the question of whether the Canadian beetle fauna is distributed like a doughnut with a hole in the middle, or is there some other explanation. After assembling available literature records as well as the collection records available to us, we present a list of 2312 species (generally only single subspecies of a species are recognized in the province) suggesting that the Canadian distribution pattern of species is more like that of a Bismark, the dough may be a little thinner in the center but there is also a core of good things. This list was largely R. Hopper’s project. He collected Saskatchewan insects since at least the 1960’s and over the last decade before his death he had compiled a list of the species he had collected along with other records from the literature or given him by other collectors (Hooper 2001). -

The pattern of postglacial re-colonization of Europe and the present population structure are known for various plant and animal species. The reed beetle Macroplea mutica (Fabricius, 1792) has characteristics that should influence both aspects in a pecu- liar way and therefore complement the currently known scenarios: It is fully aquatic but cannot swim or fly. Samples from 25 Euro- pean populations of M. mutica and five specimens from China were investigated using amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP, 251 loci). Assessment of error rates associated with this method showed that the data set contains a strong population genetic signal. As hypothesized pronounced population differentiation and signs of inbreeding were found. Italian populations are clearly differentiated from northern populations (and from each other), which underlines the role of the Alps as a major barrier. Specimens from Lake Balaton (Hungary) show some affiliation with the populations in the Baltic Sea, which are all relatively similar. Popula- tions from the eastern part of Northern Germany are similar to the Baltic populations, while those from the western part are allied to the British populations. -

RECONSTRUCTED PHYLOGENY AND RECLASSIFICATION OF THE GENERA OF DONACIINAE (COLEOPTERA: CHRYSOMELIDAE). Ingolf S. Askevold' Department of Entomology University of Manitoba Winnipeg, Manitoba R3T 2N2 Quaestiones Entomologicae CANADA 26: 601- 664 1990 ABSTRACT Based on phylogenetic analysis of genera of Donaciinae, three tribes of Donaciinae are recognized: Plateumarini, new tribe, Donaciini Kirby and Haemoniini Chen. All described genus- and species-group taxa are placed within this tribal classification, except Donacia microcephala Daniel and Daniel (uncertain generic assignment in Donaciini) and Neohaemonia voronovae Medvedev (uncertain generic assignment in Haemoniini). Poeciiocera Schaeffer is removed from synonymy with Sominella Jacobson and includes a single Nearctic species, P. harrisii (LeConte). Prodonacia Chen and Donaciocrioceris Pic (both monobasic) are newly placed as junior subjective synonyms of Donaciasta Fairmaire. Donacia (Donaciomima) Medvedev is removed from synonymy with Donacia, and is recognized as a valid subgenus, including most species hitherto placed in Donacia s. str. (i.e., 22 Nearctic and 52 Palaearctic species). The fossil genus Hemidonacia Haupt is placed as junior subjective synonym of Donacia (Cyphogaster) Goecke; Eodonacia Haupt is placed as junior subjective synonym of Donacia (s. str.) Fabricius. Donaciella Reitter is elevated to generic status, with the Nearctic species Donacia pubicollis Sujfrian and Palaearctic species Donacia clavipes Fabricius, Donacia cinera Herbst, and Donacia tomentosa Ahrens transferred to this genus. -

Introduction Macroplea Samouelle, 1819, a Palaearctic leaf beetle genus of the aquatic subfamily Donaciinae, is represented by five species, namely M. mutica (Fabricius, 1792), M. appendiculata (Panzer, 1794), M. pubipennis (Reuter, 1875), M. japana (Jacoby, 1885), and M. skomorokhovi Medvedev, 2006. This genus is known to occur in Europe, Alge- ria, Middle Asia, Siberia, Far East, China and Japan (Monrós, 1959; Gressitt & Kimotto, 1961; Jolivet, 1970; Borowiec, 1984; Lopatin, 1984; Kimoto & Takizawa, 1994; Hayashi & Shiyake, 2001; Kölsch et al., 2006; Mende et al., 2010; Silfverberg, 2010). -

Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae): the Generic Classification and Type Specimens of the New World Species
AN ANNOTATED LIST OF NEARCTIC DONACIINAE (COLEOPTERA: CHRYSOMELIDAE): THE GENERIC CLASSIFICATION AND TYPE SPECIMENS OF THE NEW WORLD SPECIES. BY INGOLF S. ASKEVOLD Department of Entomology, University of Manitoba, Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada R3T 2N21 INTRODUCTION During systematic revision of Nearctic donaciines, the majority of type specimens were examined. Some lectotype and neotype designations, made where necessary in the context of revisions of genera (Plateumaris Thomson and Neohaemonia Sz6kessy) or solution of specific taxonomic problems, were detailed elsewhere (Askevold 1987a,b, 1988, 1990, 1991). Some taxonomic problems remain despite relatively recent treatment by Marx (1957) of Donacia F. (sensu lato). I indicated earlier that Donacia is repre- sented in North America by 10 species in Donacia (s. str.), and 21 described species in Donacia (Donaciomima) Medvedev, but details were not given then (Askevold 1990). The purpose of the present paper is to detail remaining lectotype designations among Nearctic members of the genus Donacia F., to list the Nearctic members of Donaciinae, and to detail relevant tax- onomic references and information (i.e., synonymies, taxonomic changes since prior authors, and data about type specimens). Schaeffer (1919, 1925) indicated only if he based his species on a type and allotype, but not that there were also many paratypes; paratype information is included insofar as such specimens have been found.
