License INTRODUCTION Beetles of the genus Donacia Fabricius, 1775 are among the most common inhabitants of freshwater bodies: rivers, lakes, ponds, ditches, and are also found in swamps and wet meadows. In the Palaearctic fauna the genus Donacia is represented by 65 species (Bienkowski, 2015). -

Plateumaris constricticollis is a donaciine leaf beetle endemic to Japan, which lives in wetlands and uses Cyperaceae and Poaceae as larval hosts. We analyzed geographic variation in body size and ovipositor dimensions in three subspecies (constricticol- lis, babai, and toyamensis) in different climatic conditions and on different host plants. In addition, the genetic differentiation among subspecies was assessed using nuclear 28S rRNA gene sequences. The body size of subspecies toyamensis is smaller than that of the other subspecies; mean body size tended to increase towards the northeast. Ovipositor length and width are smaller in subspecies toyamensis than in the other subspecies. Although these dimensions depend on body size, ovipositor length still differed significantly between toyamensis and constricticollis-babai after the effect of body size was removed. Multiple regression analyses revealed that body size and ovipositor size are significantly correlated with the depth of snow, but not temperature or rainfall; sizes were larger in places where the snowfall was greatest. -

INTRODUCTION The entomological collections stored in the patrimony of “Grigore Antipa” National Museum of Natural History of Bucharest have a historical and documentary scientific value, both at national and international level. In “Grigore Antipa” Museum, the Chrysomelidae material is included in the old Collection of Palaearctic Coleopterans (partial data published) and in the Collection of Chrysomelidae, recently formed. The new collection, which we refer in this paper, gathers: – material preserved in the old coleopteran collection from the Palaearctic area, including specimens from Richard Canisius, Deszö Kenderessy, Fridrich Deubel, Arnold Lucien Montandon and Emil Várady collections, acquired between 1883–1923. -

COMMISSIONED REPORT Summary Surveillance of priority terrestrial invertebrates in Scotland Commissioned Report No. 609 Contractor: N.A. Littlewood & J.A. Stockan Year of publication: 2013 Background Scottish Natural Heritage has been asked by Scottish ministers to implement a strategy for the surveillance of priority habitats and species in Scotland. This report covers the development of such strategies for 55 species of non-marine invertebrates and draws extensively on expert comment from consultees with specialised knowledge of individual species covered. For each species, a report was written to present background information about the status of the species in Scotland together with issues relevant to surveillance, such as ecology, habitat and threats. This is followed by a Surveillance Methodology, outlining measures that can be taken to monitor the species in such a way as to determine trends in population size, range or status. -

1 CHECKLIST OF BEETLES (COLEOPTERA: INSECTA) OF SASKATCHEWAN R. R. Hooper1 and D. J. Larson2 1 – Royal Saskatchewan Museum, Regina, SK. Deceased. 2 – Box 56, Maple Creek, SK. S0N 1N0 Introduction A checklist of the beetles of Canada (Bousquet 1991) was published 20 years ago in order to provide a list of the species known from Canada and Alaska along with their correct names and a indication of their distribution by major political units (provinces, territories and state). A total of 7447 species and subspecies were recognized in this work. British Columbia and Ontario had the most diverse faunas, 3628 and 3843 taxa respectively, whereas Saskatchewan had a relatively poor fauna (1673 taxa) which was about two thirds that its neighbouring provinces (Alberta – 2464; Manitoba – 2351). This raises the question of whether the Canadian beetle fauna is distributed like a doughnut with a hole in the middle, or is there some other explanation. After assembling available literature records as well as the collection records available to us, we present a list of 2312 species (generally only single subspecies of a species are recognized in the province) suggesting that the Canadian distribution pattern of species is more like that of a Bismark, the dough may be a little thinner in the center but there is also a core of good things. This list was largely R. Hopper’s project. He collected Saskatchewan insects since at least the 1960’s and over the last decade before his death he had compiled a list of the species he had collected along with other records from the literature or given him by other collectors (Hooper 2001). -

The pattern of postglacial re-colonization of Europe and the present population structure are known for various plant and animal species. The reed beetle Macroplea mutica (Fabricius, 1792) has characteristics that should influence both aspects in a pecu- liar way and therefore complement the currently known scenarios: It is fully aquatic but cannot swim or fly. Samples from 25 Euro- pean populations of M. mutica and five specimens from China were investigated using amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP, 251 loci). Assessment of error rates associated with this method showed that the data set contains a strong population genetic signal. As hypothesized pronounced population differentiation and signs of inbreeding were found. Italian populations are clearly differentiated from northern populations (and from each other), which underlines the role of the Alps as a major barrier. Specimens from Lake Balaton (Hungary) show some affiliation with the populations in the Baltic Sea, which are all relatively similar. Popula- tions from the eastern part of Northern Germany are similar to the Baltic populations, while those from the western part are allied to the British populations. -

We examined the evolution of the symbiosis between reed beetles (Coleoptera, Chrysomelidae, Donaciinae) and intracellular symbionts belonging to the Enterobacteriaceae. We analyzed the partial sequence of the 16S rRNA to assess the phylogenetic relationships with bacteria we found in other beetle groups (Cerambycidae, Anobiidae, other Chrysomelidae). We discuss the ecology of each association in the context of the phylogenetic analysis. The bacteria in Sagra femorata (Chrysomelidae, Sagrinae) are very closely related to those in the Donaciinae and are located in similar mycetomes. The Sagrinae build a cocoon for pupation like the Donaciinae, in which the bacteria produce the material required for the cocoon. These aspects support the close relationship between Sagrinae and Donaciinae derived in earlier studies and make a common ancestry of the symbioses likely. Using PCR primers specific for fungi, we found Candida sp. in the mycetomes of a cerambycid beetle along with the bacteria. -
