11 A message from Charles Roberts, the Rector

My dear friends,

“We plough the fields and scatter the good seed on the ground….”. Yes, it’s that time of year again, and while I’ve heard neither of any major disasters nor bumper crops, nevertheless the cycle of planting and harvesting continues. Why is that im- portant? Because as we know this is where our food comes from! It is a familiar sce- ne for those of us who live in the country. My mother was brought up in and for many years, due to the daily delivery on her parents’ doorstep, she believed cows produced 2 pints of milk a day, and a chicken 6 eggs! My sympathies are with both animals! The joy of this celebration is always to give thanks to God for what we receive. We live in a land of plenty all rather reminiscent of the Israel of old, a land “flowing with milk and honey”. We can never take that for granted. But as much as Harvest is about celebrating and giving thanks, it is also about sharing what we have. In the churches we encourage the congregations to donate a variety of goods that help give material support to the homeless in through the Sisters of the Church Harvest Appeal. It is a great piece of outreach work that we can all participate in, and it gives the Sisters a huge boost to their very much needed larder stock. Look out for your local Harvest celebration in the service schedules and sup- port our appeal. Thank you to all those who supported the Churches Trust ‘Ride & Stride’ day last month, and particularly those who sponsored myself or others to pe- dal or walk between the local churches. I can report that while I completed a circuit that touched on around 9 churches, I did have to do it in two bites, suffering a punc- ture on the first attempt! The joys of cycling! Nevertheless the Trust, which offers small grants for church maintenance, will benefit from the day because of your sup- port, and by association, so too will our local churches.

Yours in Christ, Charles Roberts.

Filling Station Filling Station meets at its new venue, The Pelly Barn Chew Magna, on Thursday 26th October at 7.30pm. The speaker will be Trevor Dunlop . Do come along and share in our hospitality and fellowship.

13 LETTER FROM OUR ASSOCIATE PRIEST, SANDY MUNDAY

Dear Neighbours, Since moving to Chew Stoke earlier this year, I have noticed how friendly and welcoming many people are. The recent Harvest Home was a lovely event which brought many of us together to celebrate and enjoy a traditional village occasion.

Despite this and other activities and events, there are people amongst us who feel lonely and isolated. A longstanding village resident recently asked: “Why does no-one come to call? All I need is just the chance of company.” Many people who feel lonely are elderly, but others are isolated for reasons such as disability, work or childcare commitments or problems with transport. One in four older people in rural areas lives alone and this is rising. Farmers and farm workers are at high risk of stress, depression and suicide.

There are some startling figures for : Half of all older people consider the television as their main form of company Over 500,000 older people spent Christmas Day alone 12% of older people feel trapped in their own home Across the broader population, at least 5% of people often feel lonely.

As a newcomer to the area, I am trying to understand the issues specific to Chew Stoke and Nempnett Thrubwell, and I’d like to hear about anyone in our community who would appreciate a visit. If you feel that there is anything I or the church community could do to help, please let me know.

With best wishes,

Sandy

CURRY LUNCH…..coming soon!!

Once again this ever popular event is being held at Parish Hall on Friday 10 November For well over 25 years now supporters have enjoyed an excellent two course lunch, there is a cash bar and Raffle. Usually heavily oversubscribed, the message is to get tickets as soon as possible to avoid disappointment – they are available now from any Committee member, so do not delay.

On a lovely sunny evening in late June, nearly 140 people enjoyed great music played by the Frampton Footwarmers – Dixieland jazz at its best – on the shores of Chew Valley Lake (by kind permission of Chew Valley Lake Sailing Club). A hearty supper was put on, together with a very well supported Raffle and a splendid near £2000 was raised. We are hugely grateful for all the support and generosity shown by those kindly donating Raffle prizes, also Butcombe Brewery for providing the beer completely free of cost.

2nd appeal for VOLUNTEERS TO SUPPORT THE ROYAL BRITISH LEGION POPPY APPEAL 2017

In previous years, the residents of Chew Stoke have contributed generously to the RBI’s Annual Poppy appeal and in no small way this is thanks to the small group of volunteers who ‘sell’ poppies from door to door around the village for a few days each November. Unfortunately, people move on or, for one reason or another, find themselves unable to continue to support the appeal. Therefore, we need to recruit new volunteers. If anyone is prepared to give up a little of their time to support this very worthy cause and sell poppies door to door during this year’s period of remembrance, 4th to 11th November, please contact

DON’T MISS DR PHIL’S HILARIOUS HOMECOMING

On Saturday 14 October 2017 for one night only don’t miss Dr Phil Hammond’s Hilarious Homecoming Gig at Village Hall in the Chew Valley, in aid of Bishop Sutton Pre-School and Forest Club. Phil Hammond – NHS doctor, BBC broadcaster, Private Eye journalist and whistle-blowing comic – is bringing comedy home to Bishop Sutton, when he combines both of his 2016 sell-out four star Edin- burgh fringe shows into one unforgettable evening, all to help raise essential funds for Bishop Sut- ton Pre-School. Laugh, sort your life out, stay sane, plan your death and save the NHS – all in an evening! And if that wasn’t enough to tempt you to enjoy a night out in the Chew Valley, then your ticket also includes a fabulous curry supper, provided by local restaurant Sutton Spice. And with the magical talents of a close-up illusionist to entertain while you eat and a well-stocked bar, we have all the ingredients right to let you laugh the night away! But don’t miss out – tickets are £17.50 and on sale now and we are strictly limited on numbers. Book early to avoid disappointment – this is one homecoming gig you won’t want to miss! Visit www.bishopsutttonpreschool.org.uk/events to reserve your tickets today!

18 CHEW STOKE PARISH COUNCIL

Chew Stoke Short Report September Neighbourhood Watch Our Neighbourhood Watch co-ordinator attended the meeting and appealed for more volunteers to set up local email groups. Groups have doubled in recent weeks due to increase in attempted burglaries; however, there are some outstanding areas that need covering. Any interested parties are requested to contact the Parish Council Clerk and details will be forwarded on. Rubbish Collections Parishioner addressed the Council regarding new rubbish collection service from November. Rubbish will no longer be collected from our Church halls as it is classed as commercial waste. Costs will be £6.15 per week for a 12-month contract – this is a large expense for charity. Liz Richardson Ward Councillor advised that BANES could not make exceptions to Charities due to budget savings. Parishioners are reminded of their obligation to take away all rubbish from the Church Halls after private events. New House- hold Bins to be delivered late September. Waste from Parish Public rubbish bins will also fall into this category of commercial waste. Clerk to discuss with Hugo King the implications for Parish Council and bring to next meeting Village Defibrillator The Defibrillator at the Village shop is now accessible and serviceable. Discussions are to be held with the shop owner and Heartsafe regarding moving the unit to a more convenient location. Community Infrastructure Levy Payment The Parish has received payment of £2959.63 in respect of application 16/03404/FUL at Nutgrove, Pilgrims Way, Chew Stoke. For further information regarding CIL payments and how the Parish Council can spend it, please see these websites, www.bathnes.gov.uk/services/planning-and-building-control/planning-policy/ community-infrastructure-levy#three www.gov.uk/guidance/community-infrastructure-levy Please see www.chewstoke.org.uk for full copy of draft minutes Next Meeting: 19th October

19 THE HARVEST HOME — WHAT FUN WE HAD! Despite a foreboding weather forecast and intermittent showers, community spirit shone through on the day at Chew Stoke Harvest Home. Visitors enjoyed seeing the product of the creative talents of our local artists, bakers, growers, makers and inventors in the Flower, Produce and Craft tent as well as enjoying bands, the dog show, races, stalls, Nutty Noah and the famous tug-of war competition! Sustenance, always an important part of Harvest Home, was provided by Chew Valley School pupils and PTA, the Stoke Inn, Chew Stoke WI, Chew Kitchen, Chew Valley Brewery, Chew Moos and Crooker's Bakery. Community groups represented included the Film Club, WI, the Community Farm, Chew Stoke Toddler Group, Chew Stoke School PTA and the PCC. The Harvest Home committee would especially like to thank all those people who entered things into the Flower, Produce and Craft Show - this is the essence of the event and helps to keep the spirit and tradition of Harvest Home alive. Thanks also to stallholders, entertainers, sponsors, to the Ogborne family for the use of the field and, of course, to all those many people who have helped out in any way to make Harvest Home happen. If you are interested in getting involved in Harvest Home 2018 in any way, please contact Nick Baker on [email protected]/ Tel : 333753

20 Neighbourhood Watch News

After a recent crimewave across the Chew Valley area it has become clear that we need to be proactive in preventing crime through effective communication of alerts, advice & maintaining a community spirit. I'm the overall Neighbourhood Watch (NHW) coordinator for Chew Stoke, but the coverage of roads and lanes by the individual schemes is somewhat limited. There a good argument that lanes and roads within the village should consider setting up NHW schemes where none exists currently. It takes very little effort and has a number of benefits. We currently have one vacant coordinator position for an existing NHW area within Chew Stoke:-Pilgrims Way (Lower) & Bottom Cross. I’m delighted to report that following a recent appeal for new volunteers via the Chew Stoke VIllage Telegraph Facebook group, we now have 13 new coordinators for various NHW schemes around Chew Stoke. We have new schemes being set up in the following roads. If you haven’t heard from your local coordinator already, you should do so soon:

Stoke Hill (Ruth & Gary Knight) According to my records that leaves the Chew Lane (Matt Bennett) following areas without a scheme, although I Church Lane (David McDonald) appreciate some might be included in the Wallycourt Road (Ed Parsons) above schemes: Bushy Thorn Road (Carol Dyer) Chapel Lane - perhaps combine with Chapel Close (Sarah & Anthony McCormack) Pilgrims Way (Lower)? The Street, Webbs Mead (Chris Treble) Quarry Hay Chillyhill Lane (Sarah Manville) Pagans Hill Bilbie Road (Kelly Griffin) Mill Lane Salway Close We also have new coordinators for the following existing NHW areas: If you know of any coordinators for these areas, or there is a dormant scheme for any The Cedars, Blind Lane, Pilgrims Way (Top) of the above, please let me know. If your (Mark Cant) street isn’t listed above, that means there is Providence Place (Lee Kilroy) an existing NHW scheme. If you live within an Dairy Way (Charmaine Willcox) area covered by the existing NHW schemes Breach Hill Lane (Dave Jones) but don't currently get NHW alerts, please let School Lane & Home Orchard (Jo Riches) me know and I can put you in touch with your local NHW coordinator. If you don't have ac- cess to email, your local coordinator will be able to pass on information to you by some other means.

Should you be interested the vacant coordinator role, can fill in any gaps in my knowledge of schemes in Chew Stoke, or are interested in setting up a new Neighbourhood Watch scheme in your road please get in touch. The role of NW coordinator is best summarised in this link:http://www.ourwatch.org.uk/knowledge/coordinator-role-description/Finally I’d like to thank Jenny Ireson, Linda Voke, Janet Yeoman, Jeff Penna & Keith Williams who are all ‘retiring’ from their roles as NHW volunteers. On behalf of your neighbours, thank you all for your efforts to keep the community vigilant and alert to crime and for helping prevent it in the first place. Dave Jones, Breach Hill Lane & Chew Stoke Neighbourhood Watch Coordinator ([email protected] 01275 333368)

We in the WI have been really busy over the summer. It started with our Members Show in July and again the hall was filled with entries in all the traditional classes associated with Craft and Produce Shows. Chew Stoke is pleased to keep up this tradition and we were able to welcome visitors from other WIs to see our efforts. Winners this year:- Photography - Penny Saville, Handicraft - Pat Peel, Cookery - Jan Osborne Preserves - Hazel Wedlake/Jan Osborne, Fruit and Vegetables - Ann Holloman Quality Flowers - Cynthia Troup, Floral Arrangements - Pat Peel Marmalade - Helen Bowen ( The Christine Heald Cup won by her daughter!) A very embarrassed President had to present herself with 2 cups for Most Classes Entered and Overall Winner promising not to be so keen next year! (Congratulations Jan! Ed.) We were pleased to produce an afternoon tea for 130 after the Celebration Service for the life our friend Lindsay Game and enjoyed our own cream tea in the garden of Orchard House. WI members featured in the Harvest Home Show winning several classes including the rose bowl for Victoria sponge (our Presi- dent again! Ed.) We also ran a cake stall and sold all cakes by 4.00pm. Readers please don’t get the idea were are only about baking - our WI is more about friendship and having fun and I am disappointed if members leave our meetings without being entertained, maybe learning something new and socialising with friends.
