11 A message from Charles Roberts, the Rector

My dear friends,

When I was a curate my training incumbent sent us an invitation to his 50th birthday party. He was a man with a good sense of humour, and so the invitation was to join him for his “downhill run”! I suspect these days we’d feel that would be more appropriate for an older birthday. However, welcome back to the downhill run to Christmas! And while I don’t want to be too premature despite the fact that Selfridges has apparently had its Christmas Shop running since the beginning of August(!!), nevertheless September usually brings with it a sense of getting back to routine, a return to work and school, and normality returning to our lives. In the churches we settle into a pattern of what we might call “routine anticipation”, in the sense that for the Christian there is always anticipation, even when routine returns. Our season of Trinity, when we reflect on creation and mirror that with our green colouring on vestments and frontals, is the longest season in our calendar, but it will eventually lead us into Advent and Christmas. But that doesn’t mean there is nothing happening now. Being a Group means we work in partnership with each other, and so there is always the opportunity to support one another whenever we hold events. At that means the St Giles Fair on the 16th September. These Fairs are an ancient tradition, some believe started in Oxford many centuries ago, and the fact that we still run this annual event in Dundry is quite an achievement. Do come along and support the parish if you can. All funds go towards the upkeep of that ancient church which, as you know, is still in the middle of its reordering project. The scaffolding for Phase 2 will be going up soon! We also have an opportunity to support the wider church on the 9th September as the Churches Trust hold their annual Ride & Stride Day. A number of our churches have benefitted from grants from the Trust in the past, so this is a chance to give something back. So get sponsored to ride or stride between the churches. Half the money you raise goes directly to your local church, with the other half going to the Trust. Look them up on their website for details (www.somersetchurchestrust.org). Finally, I am delighted to welcome Alison Hill as our new Administrator. Alison comes to us with a wide experience in administration and church life, and I am sure will be a valuable member of our team for the Lakeside Group. Further details about her appointment are in this magazine.

Yours in Christ, Charles Roberts.

12 Group Administrator We are delighted to announce the appointment of Alison Hill as our new Lakeside Group Administrator. Alison comes with a wealth of experience in office and business administration, and also knowledge of the church and its operations. She is a member of Dundry Church and its PCC, and for the past two years has chaired the working group for the reordering project there, working closely with our architect and PCC. Alison lives in Felton with her husband. She will start work for us on Monday 4th September, and will normally work Monday, Wednes- day and Friday mornings. We look forward to welcoming her onto our team. PARISH REGISTERS St Andrews Weddings 12th August Alex Burrows & Patrick Ryan 26th August Tim George & Jordan Badger We wish them every blessing and happiness in their lives together

WEDDINGS AT St ANDREW’S, CHEW STOKE: TYING THE GATES

Those of you who have lived in the village a long time will remember the lovely old Chew Stoke custom of tying the gates at weddings. Village children used to turn out at each wedding and tie the gates with ribbon, refusing to let the bridal party through until the groom had showered them with goodies – usually chocolate or small coins. This tradition continues but children no longer arrive spontaneously but have to be invited. We are therefore asking whether any families with children would be interested in tying the gates for future weddings. We can then get in touch before a wedding to ask if you are available.

Please contact Alison on 332421 or [email protected] if you might be interested.

Prayer for September

Creator God, we thank you for the changing beauty of the countryside we live in, and for those who work in it and provide food. We pray for all who serve our community: our doctors and nurses, teachers, those working in our shop, pub and church and those who give time and effort to organise the many activities which are available. We pray too for all who are starting a new stage in their lives at school, college or job. In Christ’s name, Amen

13 LETTER FROM OUR ASSOCIATE PRIEST, SANDY MUNDAY

Dear Neighbours, July’s Jamboree, at Chew Stoke cricket club, was a lovely sunny afternoon of sports, family games and crafts, with songs, activities and stories from Angela Fraser (Deanery Children’s Worker) and her husband Doug. Later there was musical entertainment while hot food was served around the campfire. The event was well-attended and we hope to hold a similar event next year. Nempnett Thrubwell village fete at Berryfield House was a great success too, raising a profit of over £1,200. A large crowd enjoyed the fete with its horse and carriage rides, cream teas, Pimms, home-made cakes and jams, a coconut shy, face painting, welly wanging, loom band tuition, a white elephant stall and much more. Mendip Brass Band provided musical enter- tainment from their wide repertoire. We’re enjoying the newly-refurbished pipe organ at St Andrew’s, Chew Stoke. Installed in the 1840s and connected to the electricity supply during the last century, a new ‘stop’ has been added and a set of pipes, decorative until now, project the sound across the church. The organ now sounds better than ever. Many thanks to everyone who has contributed to these events and projects. Looking ahead to the autumn, Harvest Home is in Chew Stoke on Saturday 9 September. Chew Stoke Harvest Festival is on Sunday 1 October at 10.30am, and Nempnett Thrubwell Harvest Festival is a week later at 10.30am on Sunday 8 October. Other harvest celebrations are under discussion as we go to press. On another note if you would like to find out more about the Christian faith, we are thinking about running confirmation courses. These are a good way to explore your faith with other people in a setting where you can ask any questions you have. The Church of offers confirmation to adults and children (usually aged 12 or over) to take a further step in their journey of faith and make a public commitment to it. Please contact me if you or your child would like to find out more. With best wishes, Sandy

Filling Station Filling Station meets at its new venue, The Pelly Barn Chew Magna, on Thursday 28th September at 7.30pm. The speaker will be Joel Mennie. Do come along and share in our hospitality and fellowship.

We are a voluntary group of Chew Valley residents who take local people with no other form of transport to their medical appointments. We started helping the community in this way in 2010. We have a large team of volunteer drivers and passengers from all over the Chew Valley and are currently looking to find one or two additional coordinators. As coordinators you work from home on a rota basis, taking phone requests from passengers and email- ing drivers. You work flexibly from home one week in every four/five, at times to suit you and of course around your holidays. Passengers leave telephone messages for you if you are out. We are a friendly, close-knit, bunch of people who work very closely within our community.

To find out more please phone 01275 333430 to talk to a coordinator, or leave a message.

VOLUNTEERS TO SUPPORT THE ROYAL BRITISH LEGION POPPY APPEAL 2017

In previous years, the residents of Chew Stoke have contributed generously to the RBI’s Annual Poppy appeal and in no small way this is thanks to the small group of volunteers who ‘sell’ poppies from door to door around the Village for a few days each November. Unfortunately, people move on or, for one reason or another, find themselves unable to continue to support the appeal. Therefore, we need to recruit new volunteers. If anyone is prepared to give up a little of their time to support this very worthy cause and sell poppies door to door during this year’s period of remembrance, 4th to 11th November, please contact

Les Poynter on 01275 333827.

CHURCH TOWER ROOF

St. Andrew’s church tower built around 1475, now has a splendid new lead roof, this was completed at the end of June. The roof is set behind a tall, crenulated parapet with corner pinnacles. The old roof had been patched up several times in the past and the lead had split in 3 places with bitumen repairs. Mike White and his craftsmen have made an excellent job of replacing the lead roof, parapet gutters and rain outlets through the gargoyles. The photo shows the door at the top of the stone spiral staircase topped by the striking spirelet.

The conservation of the exterior walls of the tower and spire is the next project to preserve this 500 year old church tower. John Bone

20 Packed Service of Celebration

for an Inspirational Lady LINDSAY ANNE GAME

Lindsay Game died peacefully at home at Chew Stoke on Wednesday 21st June after final days of treat- ment for cancer at the RUH, Bath. Lindsay was first diagnosed with the illness 28 years ago and bravely coped with the recurrences of her illness, always looking on the bright side, remaining positive, cheerful and optimistic. Those who loved her often described her as inspirational!

On Saturday 22nd July, St. Andrew's Church, Chew Magna was packed full with almost 300 people who wanted to share in the celebration of Lindsay's life. The service was uplifting, supported by four clergy from The Lakeside Group, and two of Caroline Lowe's Choirs, Singaholics and Vox in Frox, accompanied by Julie Payne on the piano. A resounding organ, played by John Spencer, supported the three chosen hymns - 'O Jesus I have Promised', 'Blessed Assurance' and 'Shine Jesus Shine'.

A rendition of 'You Raise Me Up' performed by both choirs, joined by the full congregation in the final refrain, left everyone feeling joyful, having celebrated the life of a remarkable lady. Everyone then clapped and sang to the sound of 'Happy' by Pharrell Williams.

Following the service, everyone congregated at the Church Hall, Chew Stoke for light refreshments, kindly prepared by Chew Stoke WI. The hall was colourfully decorated with hand-made bunting and balloons from the RUH Forever Friends Appeal. There were also photographs of Lindsay's Skydive that she accomplished after her sister died of ovarian cancer in 2009, raising £3000 for the charity Ovarian Cancer Action. Large photographs of Wacky Wig Week and Lindsay's recent 60th Birthday celebra- tions were also displayed for all to appreciate.

Lindsay and her family were always so pleased with the care she received in Oncology, the Breast Care Unit and Radiotherapy at the RUH, Bath.

Lindsay's Appeal tops £14,000

Lindsay began a 'Just Giving' page in 2015 to raise money for The Forever Friends Appeal for a new Cancer Treatment Centre at the Royal United Hospital, Bath and due to many generous donations from family and friends this fund has now reached £14,000 (including Gift Aid), which has exceeded all expectations. Lindsay's original target was a mere £1000!

Nigel and his family would like to thank everyone for the wonderful support they have received following Lindsay's death. They also wish to express their sincere thanks and appreciation for the cards, messages of sympathy and comfort bestowed upon them. Donations to Lindsay's chosen charity have been so generous, and the family and the RUH are really grateful for everyone's generosity.

A NOTE FOR YOUR DIARY - Some local villagers have suggested boosting the funds a little more and will be holding a 'Pink' Coffee Morning on Saturday 7th October at The Church Hall, Chew Stoke, from 10am - 12 noon. Everyone will be encouraged to wear PINK, and this even in- cludes the wearing of PINK WIGS (optional, of course). There will be some entertain- ment from Jiggidy, from Bath, a very talented duo, and songs from Mary Dowson's Hall Singers. It is hoped that a representative from The Forever Friends Appeal will be in attendance to give feedback as to what happens to all the money that is donated. All Welcome.
