11 A message from Charles Roberts, the Rector

We live in turbulent times, and this last month has been more challenging than most I suspect for many of us. In Manchester and there has been cause for real grief, anger and searching questions as both man-made violence and (let’s be honest) man-made disaster has struck in quick succession. Add to that our current political uncertainty following the general election which, at the time of writing, remains largely unresolved, and the tendency to rattle on into Brexit negotiations come what may, and we may wonder what on earth is going on. And perhaps that is the both the key question and the key point. What on earth? Last month we were called by our bishops, as the Christian Church, to join in prayer that “God’s kingdom may come”, particularly in the ten days between Ascension (25th May) and Pentecost (4th June). But what does that mean? When Jesus appears on the scene in the gospel accounts, he comes with a cryptic message – “The time is fulfilled, the Kingdom of God has come near, repent and believe the good news.” (Mk 1:15). The Kingdom of God, or heaven, is an image of God’s will being done here on earth, his power and reign being fully established, so that all people are united in heart and mind, service and worship, much as we imagine it is like in heaven. There are two elements to this message, the one that is both instantly comforting as well as challenging, and the other which is, well, just plain challenging! The Kingdom of God is near, or as Jesus puts it later, the Kingdom is upon you. Here, right now, whatever the situation, whatever the context, in the presence of Jesus we hear that God’s Kingdom is all around. That we don’t always see it or recognise it doesn’t make this any less true or relevant. For that is the promise that Jesus offers as his opening gambit. If we are with him, we already have access to God’s Kingdom, its values, its justice, its light. Comforting, challenging? I believe so. However, what of that word we almost miss in the excitement of recognising God’s Kingdom – repent? Here is that essential ingredient of being able to recognise this Kingdom. And how relevant is that process of repentance when it comes to Manchester, London and a dozen other places in our world where we find it hard to see God’s kingdom at all? It is no accident that Jesus places this word ‘repent’ at the heart of his message. When we acknowledge our own faults we can see more clearly the world around us and God’s presence within it. So when we pray that God’s Kingdom may come, we are pray- ing for a penitent world that recognises its weaknesses, and its reliance on the God who created it in the first place. For the people of Manchester and London and where ever there is hurt, pain, anger or grief, we pray that God’s Kingdom may come. Yours in Christ, Charles Roberts.

I have recently had the pleasure of beginning to take assemblies at Chew Stoke Primary School, as part of the warm relationship between the parish church and the school. We are blessed to have such a vibrant church primary school in our village. This term, the school is focussing on the Christian value of ‘Hope’. It is good to have hopes and dreams, and with a number of tragic events hitting the headlines recently, it is good to be reminded of sources of hope. Christians believe that God is the ultimate source of hope. If you’d like to know more, you might like to look here: https://www.churchofengland.org/our-faith/being-a-christian.aspx or do get in touch with me.

With best wishes for the summer months, Sandy

After 25 years in Chew Stoke, Roy & Jenny Ireson are moving to . They are very well known in many areas of the life of our village and will be greatly missed. Beginning in 2012, Roy (with the help of Jenny and the Committee) mastermind- ed the refurbishment and modernisation of the Hall and the village will be the beneficiaries of their work for many years to come. To mark Roy’s outstanding service the PCC presented him with a St Andrew’s shield, and colleagues on the Committee gave vouchers. We wish Roy & Jenny every happiness in their new home.

ST ANDREWS CHURCH ROOF REPAIR

This photograph shows the completed repair work on the main church roof, carried out by the specialist contractor Mike White Ltd, overseen by the church architect. The tower roof (not in the photo) has been recovered in new lead, this was completed in mid June.

The centre section, (over the nave), is of Welsh slate and is in good condition. The North Aisle roof (on the left) and South Aisle (over the chapel) are formed of lead sheeting, the south facing slopes of which were in bad condition being very old and having been patched extensively over the years and become very brittle. These south facing sections have been completely replaced with new lead. The Porch (bottom right) has been re covered in zinc replacing the original zinc. Extensive repairs to the gutters, parapets, copings, flashings and stonework were also done. The repairs were completed on schedule and although the final invoice is awaited, we believe we will come in on budget. So a very big thank you to all of you who generously contributed to the Roof Re- pair Fund: without your help we could not have completed the work. Especial thanks must go to Les Poynter who virtually single-handed raised tens of thousands of pounds from the Heritage Lottery Fund, Listed Places of Worship Fund and other charities. Without Les’ drive and persistence the pro- ject simply would not have been possible. Thank you t o all concerned.

Many of us have vege- table gardens and it will be good to try out some of the plants she described and had for sale. July 20th sees us holding our Members Show and for the first time we are opening for visitors to see our efforts. A lot of effort goes into the entries and in the past friends and family have missed out in seeing the final results - not so this year. Silly Socks Day!

When the teachers at Chew Stoke Church School tell their pupils to “pull their socks up” they don’t al- ways mean that the children have to work harder! No - on this occasion they actually meant – put your silly socks on and raise money for a worthy cause! Children at the school have been wearing odd socks, spotty socks and stripey socks to raise money for ‘Ups and Downs” - a Charity which supports parents, teachers and schools with children with Down’s Syndrome. Almost £100 was raised by the school on their Silly Socks Day, even Reverend Charles Roberts ‘got in on the act’ by wearing odd socks to lead the School’s morning worship! Well Done Chew Stoke – you put your best foot forward!
