In Manchester and London there has been cause for real grief, anger and searching questions as both man-made violence and (let’s be honest) man-made disaster has struck in quick succession. Add to that our current political uncertainty following the general election which, at the time of writing, remains largely unresolved, and the tendency to rattle on into Brexit negotiations come what may, and we may wonder what on earth is going on. And perhaps that is the both the key question and the key point. What on earth? Last month we were called by our bishops, as the Christian Church, to join in prayer that “God’s kingdom may come”, particularly in the ten days between Ascension (25th May) and Pentecost (4th June). But what does that mean? When Jesus appears on the scene in the gospel accounts, he comes with a cryptic message – “The time is fulfilled, the Kingdom of God has come near, repent and believe the good news.” (Mk 1:15). The Kingdom of God, or heaven, is an image of God’s will being done here on earth, his power and reign being fully established, so that all people are united in heart and mind, service and worship, much as we imagine it is like in heaven. There are two elements to this message, the one that is both instantly comforting as well as challenging, and the other which is, well, just plain challenging! The Kingdom of God is near, or as Jesus puts it later, the Kingdom is upon you. Here, right now, whatever the situation, whatever the context, in the presence of Jesus we hear that God’s Kingdom is all around. That we don’t always see it or recognise it doesn’t make this any less true or relevant. For that is the promise that Jesus offers as his opening gambit. If we are with him, we already have access to God’s Kingdom, its values,
