Sandra Lovern Hello! God is not awaiting your presence in a church near you! Dear friends, Another lockdown in January brought a painful decision to be made about church services. Gathered worship was allowed to continue but, as Coronavirus rates ramped up alarmingly, bishops across the country urged clergy, wardens and PCCs to consider prayerfully whether, in all conscience, we should continue to offer opportunities for people to travel and gather. Here, the decision was closure, and I want to commend all your wardens to you for their courage in doing so. So, is there any good news? Well, just look at the heading. In my letter when the first lockdown began I wrote that we really need to invite God to hold onto us when we can make no sense of things. At times, the number of people I am praying for, some desperately ill or with life-changing problems, could be over- whelming, but then I am reminded that God desires our prayers, but doesn’t need them, as his great love is there ahead of us. Never forget that he is with us whenever and wherever – at home, at work, out walking, morning, noon and in the middle of a sleepless night. We may love, but do not need, to gather in a particular building. After all, our Lord Jesus never entered a church in his life! He withdrew to the nearest hillside to commune with his loving Father – and so can we. And when he left his disciples after his resurrection, he promised us his Holy Spirit to indwell and help us, whenever and wherever. At this time of world crisis, many people have felt the urge to connect with something or someone, greater than themselves. If that is the case for you, try prayer, which in essence, is no more nor less than settling down for a normal, everyday chat with someone who loves you, warts and all, and will listen. What have you got to lose? If God is not real, you are as you were. If he is real, you will be answered, I promise, so try it! And as for church in a building, start on your own, or join us online – no walls, just our own homes, but that’s one of the many places God is with us. God’s love and blessings be with you and yours. Rev’d Sandra. 11 AN ANNOUNCEMENT BY THE DIOCESE OF THE APPOINTMENT OF OUR NEW VICAR The new Benefice of Chew Valley West (Winford/Regil, Chew Stoke/Nempnett Thrubwell & Felton) It is with great pleasure that we can announce that our new Vicar will be the Rev. Dr Ian Mills who will come to us from 13th May 2021. The interview panel was unanimous in its decision and was impressed by what Ian has to offer. This appointment is subject to a satisfactory completion of the usual statutory checks made on all clergy. Whilst we as a new Benefice are delighted with this news, we need to be aware that Ian will be announcing his departure in the parishes of Larne & Inver, Glynn and Raloo, Northern Ireland, and the news there will be very differently received from here. Please pray for Ian and his wife as they prepare to move here, his present parishes as they come to terms with what his departure means to them, and continue to pray for this new benefice as we prepare to welcome Ian and the rich ministry that he will bring to us. Ian’s licensing and Service of Welcome will take place on : Thursday 13th May 2021 at 7pm at the Church of St Mary and St Peter, Winford BS40 8ET CHURCH OPENING FOR SERVICES & PRIVATE PRAYER St Mary the Virgin Church, Nempnett Thrubwell The church is presently closed because at the moment scaffolding is up Internally as the builders work to ensure the bats, whilst living in the roof space, can no longer access the inside of the building. This process will probably take several weeks. We will advise everyone as soon as it is finished. 12 St Andrew's Church Chew Stoke The church building continues to open for two sessions per week for private prayer ensuring a 72 hour period between sessions, as follows: Sunday 1-5pm and Thursday 9am – 1pm On-line Services – guaranteed to take place! Revd Sandra Lovern broadcasts a live, Church of England service each Sunday at 10.30am
