TUTHALYA IV. (M.Ö 1250-1220) III. Hattusil’in oğludur.

Archaeological tourism consists of two main activities: visits to archaeological excavation sites and participation in the studies undertaken there. The target group of archaeological tourism includes intellectuals and various people having an interest in archaeology. Any politician, bank employee, doctor, artist or other professional or working person can now spend their vacation at the archaeological excavation site of which they’ve dreamed. The development of this tourism focus area presents a novel product to the tourism economy and increases innovation in archaeology. Three main paths must be followed in order to successfully offer an archaeological tourism product: research, conservation and promotion.

This research will evaluate Iran’s potential in the tourism industry and especially cultural tourism development and tries to compare it with Turkey because of their regional proximities and similarities in culture, attractions, and religion. Scientific research shows that increasing international tourism arrivals is a way to generate more revenue than oil and development of cultural tourism is an alternative to oil based economy. The main goals of this research are: 1- evaluation of accelerating factors in cultural tourism development both in Iran and Turkey 2- evaluation of decelerating factors in cultural tourism both in Iran and Turkey. This analysis is based on information gathered through electronic data, discussion with heritage tourism managers and stakeholder workshops.

  • Anonymous Folles Found in Parion Excavations Abstract
SELEVCIA IX, 2019, 335-358 Makale Geliş | Received : 29 Mart 2019 ISSN 2148-4120 Makale Kabul | Accepted : 15 Mayıs 2019 Anonymous Folles Found in Parion Excavations Vedat Keleş – Kasım Oyarçin* Abstract Th e ancient city of Parion is located in Kemer village, within the borders of Biga district of modern-day Çanakkale province. Th e city, which was established as a Greek colony at the end of the 8th century BC, had a colonial city status in the Roman Period. Parion did not lose its importance in the Byzantine Period and became one of the important episcopal centers of the region. As a result of the excavations carried out in the ancient city of Parion between 2006-2018, 53 Anonymous Folles were recovered. Within the scope of excavation, these coins were compared with the published samples of Anonymous Folles found in the Anatolian collections, museums and archaeological excavations by giving the variances according to the types and findings areas of Anonymous Folles and the variance of the type of these coins was seen to be in the same direction with the findings of the Anatolian archaeological excavations. All of the Anonymous Folles found in the archaeological excavations in Parion were discovered in the additions of the structures of Roman Era, which show that the usage of these structures continued even if they received functional changes by additions and restorations in the 10th and 11th centuries AD. It is one of the most important data supporting both the fact that the settlement continued there and the city did not lose its position as an important port city in the era the findings of the Anonymous Folles were minted, in Parion.

  • Studies in the Archaeology of Hellenistic Pontus: the Settlements, Monuments, and Coinage of Mithradates Vi and His Predecessors
STUDIES IN THE ARCHAEOLOGY OF HELLENISTIC PONTUS: THE SETTLEMENTS, MONUMENTS, AND COINAGE OF MITHRADATES VI AND HIS PREDECESSORS A dissertation submitted to the Division of Research and Advanced Studies of the University of Cincinnati in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTORATE OF PHILOSOPHY (Ph.D.) In the Department of Classics of the College of Arts and Sciences 2001 by D. Burcu Arıkan Erciyas B.A. Bilkent University, 1994 M.A. University of Cincinnati, 1997 Committee Chair: Prof. Brian Rose ABSTRACT This dissertation is the first comprehensive study of the central Black Sea region in Turkey (ancient Pontus) during the Hellenistic period. It examines the environmental, archaeological, literary, and numismatic data in individual chapters. The focus of this examination is the central area of Pontus, with the goal of clarifying the Hellenistic kingdom's relationship to other parts of Asia Minor and to the east. I have concentrated on the reign of Mithradates VI (120-63 B.C.), but the archaeological and literary evidence for his royal predecessors, beginning in the third century B.C., has also been included. Pontic settlement patterns from the Chalcolithic through the Roman period have also been investigated in order to place Hellenistic occupation here in the broadest possible diachronic perspective. The examination of the coinage, in particular, has revealed a significant amount about royal propaganda during the reign of Mithradates, especially his claims to both eastern and western ancestry. One chapter deals with a newly discovered tomb at Amisos that was indicative of the aristocratic attitudes toward death. The tomb finds indicate a high level of commercial activity in the region as early as the late fourth/early third century B.C., as well as the significant role of Amisos in connecting the interior with the coast.

  • THE ESTABLISHMENT of KEMALIST AUTOCRACY and ITS REFORM POLICIES in TURKEY by GAZI DOGAN BA, University of Ankara, 2001 MA
THE ESTABLISHMENT OF KEMALIST AUTOCRACY AND ITS REFORM POLICIES IN TURKEY by GAZI DOGAN B.A., University of Ankara, 2001 M.A., University of Ankara, 2004 AN ABSTRACT OF A DISSERTATION submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY Department of History College of Arts and Sciences KANSAS STATE UNIVERSITY Manhattan, Kansas 2016 Abstract Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, who was a nationalist leader and founder and first president of the republic of Turkey, still remains an important figure in the Turkish political and social landscape. Kemalist historiography, which is based on Mustafa Kemal’s six-day speech (Nutuk) in October 1927, emphasizes the foundation of the Republic as central to Turkish history. While this historiography emphasizes that Mustafa Kemal had an explicit plan during his modernization efforts, this dissertation will cover how Mustafa Kemal was incoherent in his actions and changed his discourses over and over again during the change of the political structure of Turkey. Beyond that, this study will suggest that Mustafa Kemal was an opportunist and pragmatist who utilized every single event to establish a Jacobin style autocracy. This research will discuss how Mustafa Kemal succeeded in using every opportunity, such as the Law of Supreme Commander Act in August 1921, the abolition of Sultanate in 1922, the establishment of Republic in 1923, the abolition of Caliphate in 1924, and the elimination of opposition in 1925, to establish his personal autocracy. In particular, the records of Assembly debates, not sufficiently used by Turkish historians, will be helpful to understand the creation of this personal autocracy.

National Museums in the Republic of Turkey: Palimpsests within a Centralized State Wendy M. K. Shaw Summary This study considers how the various forms of the museum within the Turkish context serve in the production of a decentralized national narrative that becomes replicated to reify Turkish identity through multiple, non-hierarchized heritage sources. Through the overlay of institutions established during these periods, contemporary Turkish museums, whether public or private, serve as museums of the nation not because of their conceptual cohesion or administrative centralization, but because through this layering, they express the many competing threads through which national culture and heritage construct a complex, and at times contradictory, national narrative which enables competing segments of the population to coexist. The study provides a chronological survey of the development of museums with a special focus on five key case studies that each reflects changing relationships between the state, the nation, and the concept of the museum in various eras of Turkey’s history. In the Republic of Turkey, the Ottoman emphasis on museums of archaeology and military spolia became transformed into an emphasis on historic museums as a means of glorifying early imperial history and differentiating the republic from its Ottoman past; ethnographic-archaeological museums as a means of inscribing a unified historical and ethnological map of the country, particularly Anatolia; and, more recently, using art (in lieu of archaeology) as a signal of participation in European cultural practices, particularly among urban elite audiences.
