Our inaugural race through the streets of Schenley Park on Labor Day in 1983 instantly made us the largest vintage race event in the United States. Thirty two years later, with 250,000 spectators, we still hold that prestigious title. Our ten-day event has two race weekends, fve distinct car shows, a concert, two parades, a road rallye, a countryside tour, even a blacktie gala. We are enormously grateful to our friends at the Greater Pittsburgh Automobile Deal- ers Foundation. They topped off their frst year as Presenting Sponsor by helping us set a new record for charitable donations - $360,000! This new association will maximize our event’s impact and expansion throughout the automotive community. It’s an ideal ft for both organizations, and we are thrilled to have them as our partners. There are so many groups that come together to make this all possible, starting with our 1,200 volunteers – many who work year-round to prepare and host the events. Their dedication to our event and passion for our charities is inspirational. Our lineup of spon- sors is an impressive list of local and national organizations. Our relationship with the City of Pittsburgh – is an all-encompassing partnership that continues to make this the nation’s only vintage race run on city streets. We are eternally grateful to our car show participants and our vintage racers who both make our event possible by sharing their vehicles with all of us. Our success is measured in many ways, but one we pay the most attention to is how much we raise for charity – something that is sometimes overlooked given just how large our event has become. Since 1983 the Grand Prix has donated $3.9 million to the Autism Society of Pittsburgh and Allegheny Valley School – we are looking forward to breaking through the $4 million mark this year. Both charities are also an integral part of our vol- unteer efforts and the overall event – a testament to the philosophy of community and partnership that permeates the Grand Prix culture. Please take a moment to thank the next volunteer you see this week and drop a few dol- lars at the donation stations. Remember, it’s all about giving back to our community. The City of Pittsburgh takes great pride in the fact that this world-class event, held each year in beautiful Schenley Park, is the only vintage race in America contested on actual City streets. Many cities have tried to host similar events, but only Pittsburgh can boast of this accomplishment to date. I commend the presenting sponsor; the Greater Pittsburgh Automobile Dealers Foundation, along with all the generous sponsors and organizations that help support this event. Most importantly, I applaud the volunteers who work all year to put together this spectacular event –they are the heart and soul of the Grand Prix, and we simply couldn’t do it without them. Since the Grand Prix was launched in 1983, it has raised an incredible $3.95 million for the Autism Society of Pittsburgh and Allegheny Valley School, including a record $360,000 last year. On top of that, the over 250,000 spectators expected to visit Pittsburgh during Race Week help to sustain our City’s vitality. It’s successful, one-of-a- kind events like the Grand Prix that show visitors from all over what America’s “Most Livable City” has to offer. The City’s numerous historical, recreational and social amenities continue to surprise and impress people from all over the world. I encourage you to attend the many Race Week activities throughout Pittsburgh, and come out to Schenley Park for the exciting weekend of races and magnificent car shows. Best wishes for a great event! Sincerely, William Peduto Mayor, City of Pittsburgh 2015 PITTSBURGH VINTAGE GRAND PRIX 05 PVGP EXECUTIVE COmmITTEE The Grand Prix’s success is due in large part to our dedicated team on the Executive Committee. The Chapman Report Published by the Golden Gate Lotus Club www.gglotus.org April 2006 Major Breakthrough In Racing Portapoddies editor Finally, while sitting on the portapoddy and listening to the cars on the track going through the gears, you can shift along with them until you’re able to return to trackside. Yes, this was found and photographed at the Goodwood Revival races, but we can only hope that this design will be seen at our local tracks in the future. I, myself, was able to shift all the way up to fourth......doesn’t appear to have a 5th or 6th gear.....maybe in the next rev. Traction control whould be added too, I believe, knowing the potential for slippery floor conditions in these units. Anyway, this does symbolize a technological break- through that can only hint at the possibilities that we may see in the future. As Nissan says: “SHIFT”. “Europa”, A Fake In Lotus History Most of us just take for granted that the Europa is a true Lotus car. Well, we’ve been dupped for all of these years by an unscruptulous band of con artists that are trying to raise the value of this simple kit car created and made at the University of Northern South Dakota. Do you really believe that the car below, at’stated’ concourse level, is a true Lotus. • The Detomaso Mangusta an Italian Exotic That Happened by Accident
The DeTomaso Mangusta An Italian exotic that happened by accident.. By Rick Feibusch In the good old days, years before the implementation of emissions and safety laws, exotic high-performance automakers woul d just build a car, display it at a few key international auto shows and start taking orders. There wasn't even a legal requirement that the manufacturer road test a prototype before the first production models were delivered to the public! Italian automakers were particularly prone to using the public to test their cars - after delivery. The DeTomaso Mangusta was a particularly interesting example. The Mangusta was born out of the ambition of Argentinian race driver Alejandro De Tomaso who, like many othe r racers, yearned to build his own cars. DeTomaso was born to a wealthy family in a small town near Buenos Aires. He left Argentina in 1955, just one step ahead of Juan Peron's goon squads, having offended the great dictator with political writings publi shed in a local newspaper. Peron, like his idol Adolph Hitler, loved sports cars and heavily supported successful drivers like Juan Manuel Fangio because he believed that if drivers from his country won races, it showed a national superiority. Since DeTomaso wouldn't play ball, he was excluded from the gravy train. DeTomaso left for Italy, the land of his grandparents with only $126 in his racing jumpsuit He met Isabelle Haskell, a rich American woman who owned and raced a Siata and a Maserati. In those d ays, women racers were a rare and unproven commodity, and Ms.

The Museum of Modern Art 11 West 53 Street, New York, N.Y. 10019 Tel. 956-6100 Cable: Modernart NO. 35D HISTORY OF DESIGN DEPARTMENT The Museum of Modern Art has had a long history, dating back to 1936, of working with industry and government to improve the quality of industrial and architectural design, and to increase public awareness of the importance of environmental needs. Competitions and exhibi tions organized by the Museum's Department of Architecture and Design have resulted in such classics of contemporary design as the chairs designed by Charles Eames and Eero Saarinen. Experience has shown that this form of cooperation has made it possible for many new design ideas to enter public conscious ness, thus helping to make them a reality. THE TAXI PROJECT: REALISTIC SOLUTIONS FOR TODAY is the fourth Museum of Modern Art exhibition devoted to automobiles. 8 AUTOMOBILES, the first car exhibition to be held in an art museum, was organized in 1951. It dealt with the aesthetics of the auto mobile as a work of art as well as the problems of passenger-car design. The eight automobiles selected were: the 1931 Mercedes SS (German); the Army Jeep, manufactured by the Willys-Overland Motor Co. (American); the MG, built by Morris Car Co. (British); the 1939 Bentley (British); the 1949 Cisitalia, designed by Pinin Farina (Italian); the Talbot sport and touring car (French); the 1937 Cord (American); and the 1941 Lincoln Continental (American). In 1953, The Museum of Modern Art presented 10 AUTOMOBILES in the Museum's garden. Included were postwar American and European cars designed for mass-production, re vealing a strong Italian design influence.
