90Th Anniversary of the Targa Florio Victory: Bugatti Wins Fifth Consecutive Title

90th anniversary of the Targa Florio victory: Bugatti wins fifth consecutive title MOLSHEIM 02 05 2019 FOR MANY YEARS BUGATTI DOMINATED THE MOST IMPORTANT CAR RACE OF THE 1920S Legends were born on this track. Targa Florio in Sicily was considered the world’s hardest, most prestigious and most dangerous long-distance race for many years. Today, current Bugatti models remind us of the drivers from back in the day. Sicilian entrepreneur Vincenzo Florio established his own race on family-owned roads in the Madonie region. Between 1906 and 1977, sports cars raced for the title at international races, some of which even had sports car world championship status. Winners at this race could proudly advertise their victory. For this reason, all important sports car manufacturers sent their vehicles to Sicily. Between 1925 and 1929 Bugatti dominated the race with the Type 35. In particular, in 1928 and 1929, one man showcased his skills at the wheel of his vehicle: Albert Divo. In these two years he was unbeatable in his Bugatti Type 35 C, winning the race in Sicily on 5 May 1929 after having also claimed the top spot in 1928. He also set a further record when he crossed the finish line: the “Fabrik Bugatti” team won the title five times in a row – this had never been done before in the history of the Targa Florio and remained an unbeaten record until the end of the last official races, to this day. A reason to look back. After all, the race was anything but easy: initially one lap of the “Piccolo circuito delle Madonie” was around 148 kilometres, from 1919 organisers cut the race lap distance to a still considerable 108 kilometres.

The Legend of Ford and Carroll Shelby, Changing the Course of Automotive History

The Legend of Ford and Carroll Shelby, Changing the Course of Automotive History In the early 1960s, the advent of the American muscle car era would mean high-power V8 engines, quicker-shifting four-on-the-floor transmissions, bigger tires and improved suspensions for faster elapsed times as drag strips popped up across the country. This fierce competition for bragging rights on the weekends would lead to an increase in vehicle sales on showroom floors come Monday. With Henry Ford II determined his company could compete with the best and fastest in the world, a boisterous young man from Texas with a reputation for building winning race chassis powered by Ford engines came to the attention of executives in Dearborn. Soon a collaboration formed between Carroll Shelby and his Shelby America and Ford Motor Company – one that would change the course of automotive history. 1965 Shelby GT350 Shelby GT350, the first high-performance Mustang While Ford engineers worked in secret to develop the revolutionary Mustang pony car, Shelby was already hard at work building Ford-powered cars to take on the world at Le Mans. As the very first 1965 Mustangs came off the line, several were quietly shipped to Shelby America in California for engineering of the first high-performance Mustang – the Shelby GT350. Less than a year after Mustang began production, Ford and Shelby pounced with the first high- performance model, Shelby GT350. Powered by a Shelby-modified Ford 289 high-performance V8 churning out 306 horsepower, the 1965 Mustang Shelby GT350 competition models were built and homologated for SCCA competition, quickly winning the first race on February 14, 1965.

The Museum of Modern Art 11 West 53 Street, New York, N.Y. 10019 Tel. 956-6100 Cable: Modernart NO. 35D HISTORY OF DESIGN DEPARTMENT The Museum of Modern Art has had a long history, dating back to 1936, of working with industry and government to improve the quality of industrial and architectural design, and to increase public awareness of the importance of environmental needs. Competitions and exhibi tions organized by the Museum's Department of Architecture and Design have resulted in such classics of contemporary design as the chairs designed by Charles Eames and Eero Saarinen. Experience has shown that this form of cooperation has made it possible for many new design ideas to enter public conscious ness, thus helping to make them a reality. THE TAXI PROJECT: REALISTIC SOLUTIONS FOR TODAY is the fourth Museum of Modern Art exhibition devoted to automobiles. 8 AUTOMOBILES, the first car exhibition to be held in an art museum, was organized in 1951. It dealt with the aesthetics of the auto mobile as a work of art as well as the problems of passenger-car design. The eight automobiles selected were: the 1931 Mercedes SS (German); the Army Jeep, manufactured by the Willys-Overland Motor Co. (American); the MG, built by Morris Car Co. (British); the 1939 Bentley (British); the 1949 Cisitalia, designed by Pinin Farina (Italian); the Talbot sport and touring car (French); the 1937 Cord (American); and the 1941 Lincoln Continental (American). In 1953, The Museum of Modern Art presented 10 AUTOMOBILES in the Museum's garden. Included were postwar American and European cars designed for mass-production, re vealing a strong Italian design influence.
