7. A summary of the current policy (source Strategic Plan 2017-2021) :

University College Roosevelt (UCR) is a residential University College in Middelburg, the Netherlands. It offers a three-year undergraduate program in the liberal arts and sciences. Academically, UCR is part of , one of the leading research universities of the Netherlands and of Europe. Depending on the major specialization students choose, UCR alumni are awarded either a Bachelor of Arts or a Bachelor of Science degree from Utrecht University.

UCR first opened its doors in 2004 and has welcomed thousands of students since. In the best tradition of a liberal arts and sciences education, students at UCR not only grow academically, they also find the opportunity to develop as individuals who take responsibility for their own social and learning environment, as well as for civic and political challenges within the wider world. The UCR curriculum enables students to engage in outreach projects with national and international governments, organizations, and businesses, as well as in exchange programs with some of the very best universities both in the Netherlands and internationally. Our mission is to help each and every student to make the most of their talents.

From the first graduating class of 2007 onwards, UCR alumni have been admitted to the most prestigious graduate programs in the Netherlands and abroad. UCR alumni work in leading private businesses, governmental and non-governmental organizations, the performing arts, journalism, scientific research institutes, and universities across the globe. Year after year, our alumni surveys show that should they have to make a choice for an undergraduate program again, more than 90% of them would opt for UCR again. UCR’s academic learning environment has been praised for its excellent learning environment, the consistency of its program, and its educational philosophy in the 2008 and 2013 accreditation decisions by the NVAO (Dutch- Flemish Accreditation Organization for Higher Education). It also carries with pride the ‘small-scale and intensive’ label that in the Netherlands is reserved for a small number of study programs with the most challenging, intensive, and innovative approaches to higher education.

We educate students for academic excellence. But academic excellence is not enough. We also educate our students to be at home in a diverse and pluralistic world, and to learn to craft common solutions to 21st Century challenges with fellow citizens. UCR is a classical liberal arts and sciences college, which offers many academic disciplines for our students to choose from. We stay faithful to this tried and tested approach because it is important that students acquire the specialized disciplinary knowledge that they need in order to qualify for high-quality master’s programs after graduation from UCR. For this classical approach to stay successful, it needs to be balanced with a trend in academic education towards a greater stress on interdisciplinary skills. 21st Century challenges such as the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals can only be answered if skills and knowledge from many different academic and societal fields can be successfully combined. This is why UCR aims to add more project-based, interdisciplinary courses to its curriculum.

Technological and Engineering aspects of education for a better future have traditionally been less represented in the classical liberal arts and sciences across the globe. But many of the most challenging goals for 21st Century innovation – climate change, energy change, water management, public health, food politics, urban planning – cannot be sufficiently analyzed and answered without a firm understanding of applied technology and engineering. This is why UCR will be developing from its existing Science department a new focus on questions of Engineering and Innovation.

Situated in the heart of the biggest natural and cultural delta of North-Western Europe, UCR is ideally placed to bring more technological approaches to its liberal arts and sciences education. As of Winter 2020/21, University College Roosevelt will offer its students state-of-the-art lab facilities in a Joint Research Center in Middelburg, shared and co-run with HZ: University of Applied Sciences, the province of Zeeland (Campus Zeeland!), industry, and start-up businesses. This first step will enable the college to bring its existing facilities for the Sciences department to a much higher level. In a second and more far-reaching step, and adding to the strong and flourishing majors in Arts & Humanities, Social Science, and Science, UCR is developing a new major in ‘Liberal Engineering’. This will help us develop a unique LAS identity by which we integrate innovative approaches to the application of technological knowledge in our existing Liberal Arts and Sciences curriculum. No money from existing UCR budgets will be invested in this plan: we will focus on external funding. The Province of Zeeland and the City of Middelburg will be our strong partners in this.
