Radom is a city in east-central (Polish: Polska) with 219,703 inhabitants. It is located 100 kilometres (62 miles) south of Poland's capital, , on the Mleczna River. It is the second largest city in the Masovian Voivodship (Polish: Województwo Mazowieckie), afer Warsaw (Polish: Warszawa). Radom's original setlement dates back to the 8th–9th century. It was an early mediaeval town in the valley of the Mleczna River (on the approximate site of present-day Old Town). In the second half of the 10th century, it became a , called Piotrówka, which was protected by a rampart and a moat. Due to convenient locaton on the edge of a large wilderness, and its proximity to the border of (Polish: Małopolska) and , Radom quickly emerged as an important administratve center of the early Kingdom of Poland. It is generally assumed that the city took its name from Radomir, or the tribe of Radomirans. Radom is a local cultural centre, boastng one of the most impressive collectons of the works of , a very famous Polish painter and best remembered citzen of Radom (1854- 1929). One should not miss the opportunity to visit the open-air Village Museum (Polish: Muzeum Wsi Radomskiej), set in a scenic locaton on the southwestern edge of the city, and which has precious examples of folk architecture and artefacts from the 18th and 19th centuries. The city is home to the biennial Radom Air Show, the largest and best-atended air show in Poland, held during the last weekend of August. There are three parks ( Leśniczówka Park - Park Leśniczówka, Kościuszko Park - Park im. Tadeusza Kościuszki and Old Garden - Stary Ogród) , three museums, three art galleries, three cinemas, one theatre and one philharmonic orchestra. In additon, there are several sports clubs in Radom: RoSa Sport Radom - men's basketball team, founded in 2004, currently in 1st league. - men's football team, founded in 1910, currently playing in 3rd league. Czarni Radom - men's volleyball team, founded in 1921, currently playing in 1st league. Broń Radom - men's football team, founded in 1926, currently in 4th league. Radom is nowadays a place where history meets modernity. Historical tenement houses, churches, and other old buildings sit comfortably among newly built business and shopping centres, together creatng an unusual climate for the city. The city has various leisure and sports events, with the modernised sports hall also hostng numerous feastng and dancing events. Radom is an important railroad juncton, where two lines meet: east–west connecton from to Łódź, and north– south from Warsaw to , and Kraków. Radom's climate is humid contnental with cold, snowy, cloudy winters and warm, sunny, stormy summers. The average temperature ranges between −1.8 °C (29 °F) in January and 23 °C (66.6 °F) in July. The mean year temperature is 8.5 °C (47.3 °F). Temperatures may ofen reach 30 °C (86 °F) in the summer.
