But, fortunate is the student who enjoys the subject of his research. This slim volume is essentially the original manuscript, except for minor changes in the interest of greater accuracy, which was approved in 1964 by Drs. James Parsons, Gunther Barth and the late Carl Sauer. That it is being published now, perhaps as a response to a new awareness of and interest in our past, is due to the efforts of the “Friends of the Alameda Free Library” who have made a project of getting my thesis into print. I wish to thank the members of this organization and all others, whose continued interest and perseverance have made this publication possible. General Aviation 1 Abstract It is very difficult to pinpoint the specific Wtransportation development needs· of general aviation airports and their surrounding communities. Often, insufficient management expertise at individual airports, coupled with the state's occasional unfamiliarity with specific community problems, hinders the state's effective administration of airport assistance programs. Therefore, state officials would benefit from the airport administrators' opinions concerning how state programs might be modified to best meet individual airport needs. This paper describes a study which reveals wdifferences in perceptions· between the Alabama Department of Aeronautics (DOA) and individual general aviation public airport managers. This study examines qualitative perceptions of 15 airport factors, such as paved runway length, adequate taxiways, approach aids, hangar/tie-down space, and strong airport management, plus community support areas, such as nearby hotel/motel, industrial park, and ground transportation. Airport managers judged these factors at their own airports, ideal airport, and at several chosen as a control mechanism. Airport managers were also asked to reveal sources and amounts of funding received for capital projects and operational needs. When compared with funding data from official sources, significant discrepancies were observed. -

A few years ago, the Foundation heard from two senior women who had been walking together at Lake Chabot for decades. After taking the challenge, one of the women shared: “I get to see new places, clear my head and get healthy. I feel great about it.” The Trails Challenge had a similar impact on our cover subjects: Jonathan, Donica, Penny and Rocky Katayanagi. Jonathan and his daughter, Penny, took on the 2017 Trails Challenge when Penny was 6, completing all five trails in one day. Dr. Manja Stephan-Emmrich Tag der mündlichen Prüfung: 14.06.2016 Abstract: Kazakhstan, Astana, Migrants, Ethnography, City of the Future, Liminality The dissertation aims to answer the research question of what it means for various groups of individuals to live in Astana on a daily basis. As the new capital, Astana attracted a large number of internal migrants from various parts of Kazakhstan, who searched for better prospects and lives. Officially, the new capital is promoted by Kazakhstan’s government as “city of the future” and regards it as President Nazarbayev’s (1991-2019) most successful project. The dissertation offers an ethnographic contribution to urban experiences of migrants in Central Asia. The dissertation is divided into five main chapters. Chapter one offers an introduction to the theme and outlines major theoretical framework and the methodology on which the research is based. I apply the theory of the co-production of space (the social production and social construction of space) outlined by Setha Low to integrate the ‘spatial’ aspect as an integral part of my research. In addition, I employ the concept of liminality (Turner, 1967, Thomassen, 2014) as the central idea to analyze the stories of my informants. -

EDUCATION Mr. Mitchell has provided project management and technical analysis capabilities for a wide variety of projects requiring environmental review, B.S., Civil Engineering, San including transportation and transit, industrial, institutional, commercial, Francisco State residential, mixed-use, educational and recreational projects. He has served University as project director / project manager for a number of CEQA environmental 23 YEARS documents, including environmental review for sports facilities and sporting EXPERIENCE events, capital improvement projects, wineries and vineyards, quarries, university and local school district master plans, specific plans, planned use developments, transit service plans, multi-modal stations, and demolition projects. Mr. Mitchell’s technical analysis responsibilities include required CEQA/NEPA analysis of transportation, air quality, noise, land use and policies, and infrastructure issues. Sports and Concert Facilities / Special Events Golden State Warriors Event Center and Mixed-Use Development SEIR, San Francisco, CA. Project Manager. Paul recently managed a Subsequent EIR for a landmark $1 billion, privately funded development within the thriving Mission Bay neighborhood in San Francisco. The centerpiece is an 18,000-plus–seat event center that will be the new home of the Golden State Warriors basketball team, during the NBA season, and provide a year-round venue for a variety of other uses, including concerts, family shows, other sporting events, cultural events, conferences and conventions. Office, retail, and open space uses and structured parking are also proposed. A Subsequent EIR (SEIR) was prepared for the project, tiering from the 1998 Mission Bay Final SEIR. The project was processed under CEQA streamlining legislation of both AB 900 (“environmental leadership project”) and SB 743. -

2015 BART Station Profile Study Station Profiles – Non-Home Origins STATION PROFILES – NON-HOME ORIGINS This section contains a summary sheet for selected BART stations, based on data from customers who travel to the station from non-home origins, like work, school, etc. The selected stations listed below have a sample size of at least 200 non-home origin trips: • 12th St. / Oakland City Center • Glen Park • 16th St. Mission • Hayward • 19th St. / Oakland • Lake Merritt • 24th St. Mission • MacArthur • Ashby • Millbrae • Balboa Park • Montgomery St. • Civic Center / UN Plaza • North Berkeley • Coliseum • Oakland International Airport (OAK) • Concord • Powell St. • Daly City • Rockridge • Downtown Berkeley • San Bruno • Dublin / Pleasanton • San Francisco International Airport (SFO) • Embarcadero • San Leandro • Fremont • Walnut Creek • Fruitvale • West Dublin / Pleasanton Maps for these stations are contained in separate PDF files at www.bart.gov/stationprofile. The maps depict non-home origin points of customers who use each station, and the points are color coded by mode of access. The points are weighted to reflect average weekday ridership at the station. For example, an origin point with a weight of seven will appear on the map as seven points, scattered around the actual point of origin. Note that the number of trips may appear underrepresented in cases where multiple trips originate at the same location. The following summary sheets contain basic information about each station’s weekday non-home origin trips, such as: • absolute number of entries and estimated non-home origin entries • access mode share • trip origin types • customer demographics. Additionally, the total number of car and bicycle parking spaces at each station are included for context. -
