The Chronological Implications of Relief Ware Bucchero at Poggio Civitate by Anthony Tuck and Erik Nielsen iano del Tesoro at Poggio Civitate Preserves evidence of the only 7th century BCE architectural comPlex known to date in Central Italy. 1 Thus far, three buildings of Pthis comPlex have been identified. These consist of OC1/Residence, an aPParent - ly aristocratic household, the furnishings of which attest to the wealth of its inhabitants, OC2/WorkshoP, a large and ornately decorated multifunctional workshoP, and OC3/TriPartite, a building whose triPartite interior division conforms to what we might exPect of a religious structure of the Etruscan seventh century. All stood together on the Plateau by the last quarter of the seventh century BCE. 2 StratigraPhic evidence suggests that the three buildings were destroyed in a sin - gle conflagration. 3 Although the sPecific causes of the fire can not be determined, evi - dence from OC2/WorkshoP suggests a sudden catastroPhe. -
Material Culture and the Greek and Latin Classroom

Using inscriptions on Greek vases and Roman coins as well as maps and house plans as examples, it demonstrates ways to insert material culture into the Greek and Latin classroom that will enhance a student’s knowledge of the language. It also shows how the use of material culture will help a class meet not only the Cultures goal of the new Standards, but also the Connections, Comparisons, and Communication goals. KEYWORDS Roman coins, material culture, inscriptions, maps, house plans, Standards, Greek vases A student starting French or Spanish can hold a short conversation in the target language after just one week of class. What can we offer students beginning their journey in ancient Greek or Latin? This article will demonstrate ways to insert material culture into high school and college Greek and Latin classrooms through inscriptions on Greek vases and Roman coins and through the exploration of maps and plans. -

Un Kyathos Di Bucchero Da Poggio Pelliccia La “Bottega Vetuloniese” E Il Suo Ruolo Nella Trasmissione Della Scrittura in Etruria
UN KYATHOS DI BUCCHERO DA POGGIO PELLICCIA LA “BOTTEGA VETULONIESE” E IL SUO RUOLO NELLA TRASMISSIONE DELLA SCRITTURA IN ETRURIA (Con le taw. XI-XV f.t.) Abst r act . The re-examination of the finds from the tomb of Poggio Pelliccia (near Vetulonia) permits us to reconstruct a type Pasmussen 3 bucchero kyathos. The vase can be attributed to a ceramic workshop, operating in the second half of the seventh century BC in Northern Etruria. The kyathos is part of an increasingly numerous group of objects that allow us to define more precisely the ceramicist’s characteristics. Furthermore, some technical, stylistic and epigraphic considerations of these extraor- dinary objects of the Etruscan aristocracy lead to a reconsideration of the hypotheses concerning the origin and spread of writing in Northern Etruria. Presento in questa sede alcune considerazioni sui kyathoi di bucchero iscritti, dei quali mi sono occupato in passato1 e che, alla luce di nuovi studi e di recenti scoperte, ritengo utile sottoporre ad una nuova revisione. Legati alla pratica del ‘dono’ tra membri eminenti delle aristocrazie dell’Orientalizzante, questi vasi rappre- sentano, oltre che una sontuosa manifestazione dell’artigianato artistico, documenti eccezionali per lo sviluppo e la diffusione della scrittura in Etruria. La “Bottega vetuloniese” e il Maestro C Nel 1971 Anna Talocchini, funzionario archeologo per il territorio di Vetulonia, intraprese lo scavo del tumulo di Poggio Pelliccia nel comune di Gavorrano (Grosse- to), all’imbocco meridionale della valle del Sovata. Il grande tumulo, elevato oltre il piano di campagna, era da sempre evidente sul pendio meridionale di Poggio Zenone presso Giuncarico. -

The Tomb of Fastia Velsi from Chiusi by Richard De Puma he modern Tuscan town of Chiusi is the site of one of the major inland cities of the ancient Etruscans. For centuries the settlement, its cemeteries and the exten - Tsive satellite communities have been exPlored, Plundered and excavated. To see and study the thousands of objects recovered from this imPortant area one must travel to Italy, but there are a few tomb -grouPs from Chiusi in North America. Most of these date from the rich Orientalizing Period. For examPle, a 19 th century PhotograPh (fig. 1) records one of two tomb -grouPs suPPosedly excavated at Chiusi about 189 5 and acquired by A. L. Frothingham Jr., the first editor of the AJA, for the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago in 1896. 1 Such record PhotograPhs of tomb-grouPs, with the objects so symmetrically and artfully arranged , immediately PromPt the ques - tions: Is this everything that was found in this tomb or just the most interesting or attractive objects? The first three vol- umes were published before world war ii, in the years 1931-1936, and elaborated primarily by kazimierz Bulas and, to a lesser extent, by Edmund Bulanda, who took part in the project mostly in the capacity of the series editor. These volumes were published by the Polish acad- emy of arts and sciences (Polska akademia Umiejętności – PaU) in Cracow, under auspices of the Union académique internationale (Uai). They included not only the most prominent and most valuable collections, such as the famous Gołuchów collection of the Czartoryski family (volume 1), or the Cracow collection in the Princes Czartoryski Museum, but also smaller collections of the Jagiellonian University (JU) and the National Museum in Cracow (volume 2), and finally other small collections inw ilanów, Poznań, warsaw, Vilnius, Łańcut and many other places (volume 3). -
