The nineteenth century theologian, author and poet Charles Kingsley was a notable populariser of Darwinian evolution. He championed Darwin’s cause and that of honesty in science for more than a decade from 1859 to 1871. Kingsley’s interpretation of evolution shaped his theology, his politics and his views on race. The relationship between men and apes set the context for Kingsley’s consideration of these issues. Having defended Darwin for a decade in 1871 Kingsley was dismayed to read Darwin’s account of the evolution of morals in Descent of Man. He subsequently distanced himself from Darwin’s conclusions even though he remained an ardent evolutionist until his death in 1875. Where information has been derived from other sources, I confirm that this has been acknowledged in the thesis. iii Abstract Ancient Krete perceived itself, and was perceived from outside, as rather different from the rest of Greece, particularly with respect to religion, social structure, and laws. The purpose of the thesis is to explore the bases for these perceptions and their accuracy. Krete’s self-perception is examined in the light of the account of Diodoros Siculus (Book 5, 64-80, allegedly based on Kretan sources), backed up by inscriptions and archaeology, while outside perceptions are derived mainly from other literary sources, including, inter alia, Homer, Strabo, Plato and Aristotle, Herodotos and Polybios; in both cases making reference also to the fragments and testimonia of ancient historians of Krete. While the main cult-epithets of Zeus on Krete – Diktaios, associated with pre-Greek inhabitants of eastern Krete, Idatas, associated with Dorian settlers, and Kretagenes, the symbol of the Hellenistic koinon - are almost unique to the island, those of Apollo are not, but there is good reason to believe that both Delphinios and Pythios originated on Krete, and evidence too that the Eleusinian Mysteries and Orphic and Dionysiac rites had much in common with early Kretan practice. The early institutionalization of pederasty, and the abduction of boys described by Ephoros, are unique to Krete, but the latter is distinct from rites of initiation to manhood, which continued later on Krete than elsewhere, and were associated with different gods. -

Kantor - Plant Ornament in the Ancient Near East, Chapter VIII: The Decorative Flora of Crete and the Late Helladic Mainland SECTION II: THE AEGEAN CHAPTER VIII THE DECORATIVE FLORA OF CRETE AND THE LATE HELLADIC MAINLAND In the midst of the sea, on the long island of Crete, there dwelt a people, possessors of the fabulous Minoan culture, who are known to have had trade relations with Egypt, and with other Near-Eastern lands. Still farther away towards the north lies the Mainland of Greece, a region that proved itself to be a very hospitable host to the graft of Minoan culture. Before the close of the LH period the ceramic results of this union were to be spread over the Near East in great profusion and it becomes necessary to define the extent of Aegean influence on those traditions of Near-Eastern art that lie within the scope of our topic. Before this is possible a concise summary of the plant ornamentation of the Aegean must be presented.1 This background forms a necessary basis without which the reaction of Aegean plant design on the main development of our story, be it large or small, cannot be determined. 1 A great deal of interest and work has been devoted to the study of Minoan decorative art almost since the beginning of its discovery, and full advantage of this has been taken in the preparation of the present survey. Minoan Art First Term 1958 at the Southern End of the Aegean Sea
Minoan Art First Term 1958 At the southern end of the Aegean Sea, Crete was situated in an excellent geographical position to receive cultural stimulus from Mesopotamia and the Near East, and also from the north, from Europe: and it enjoyed the natural protection afforded by the sea. And during the Bronze Age (an archaeological period which in the Near Eastern countries dares from around 3000BC to 1000BC) a flourishing civilization with strong individual characteristics arose and flourished. The rise of England, in relation to Northern Europe, many centuries later affords a rough parallel to the rise of Crete in the Eastern Mediterranean during the Bronze Age. Let us look at a map of the area.* Nothing was known about the culture of Ancient Crete until Sir Arthur Evans purchased the site of the temple of Knossos in 1900 and began to uncover the ruins of the huge Palace of Knossos. He was following up the work of Heinrich Schliemann who had begun excavations at Troy in northern Asia Minor and later a Tiryns and Mycenae in the south o Greece, in 1890s. Evans revealed the presence of a highly civilized and flourishing Bronze Age civilization in Crete which he called Minoan, from the King Minos of Greek legend. The Minoan culture was found to be, unlike the great kingdoms of the Near East and Egypt, an essentially maritime culture based upon maritime supremacy in the eastern Mediterranean Minoan vessels traded with Egypt, the Levant, Cyprus and Asia Minor. In consequence the culture owes much to Egypt and the Near East, but the Minoans stamped their art with a strong personal quality of its own. -
A Bucchero Pesante Column Krater in Iowa
A BUCCHERO PESANTE COLUMN KRATER IN IOWA (Con le tavv. II-VII f. t.) In 1970 the University of Iowa Museum of Art acquired a large column krater said to have come from Vulci (1). It was presented as part of an exhi- bition of ancient Italian pottery from Midwestern collections in 1971 (2). This article describes the krater and then relates it to other vases of similar type attempting to establish a secure date and provenance. The investigation of parallel examples enables us to determine more specifically the nature of « bucchero pesante » production in the Vulci area and its relationship to Etru- scan pottery manufacture at other sites. This thesis attempts to redress the balance by examining a number of volunteer-run museums in Dorset and the characteristics and motivations of the volunteers involved in their development. This element of the project included a survey of museum volunteers in the county and studies of a selected group of museums through interviews and through archival research in museum records. The thesis also presents a historical analysis, through a number of case histories, of the development of volunteer-run museums in English market towns and villages from 1884, demonstrating clearly how the development of these small museums reflects larger changes in the rural community from the paternalism of the late nineteenth century, through growing independence and democracy after 1918, to the counter urbanisation of the second half of the twentieth century. 1 Changing perceptions of rural identity are also apparent in the history of these museums. -

Publishing for the first time a drawing made by Augustus Pitt-Rivers in England in 1882, this paper rethinks this proposition by making two arguments. First, the paper explores the role of the classificatory anthropology of the 1870s and 1880s on both sides of the Atlantic in the emergence of the idea of organizing anthropological knowledge. It suggests that this emergence was bound up with the problem of classifying anthro- pological knowledge in material form in European and North American museums. Second, the paper considers how our knowledge of the discipline’s past can develop from the study of objects and documents (rather than only through rereading anthropologists’ published texts), in a manner akin to documentary archaeology. In this respect, the anthropological problem of organizing knowledge in material form is still with us, but with a new challenge: How adequate are our current forms of disciplinary historiography for the use of material evidence? Rather than proposing a new set of “charter myths,” the paper explores writing the history of four-field anthropology as a form of material culture studies or historical archaeology (in other words, as a subfield of anthropology), working with the “time warps” created by museums and archives in which disciplinary history is not always already written. -

Using inscriptions on Greek vases and Roman coins as well as maps and house plans as examples, it demonstrates ways to insert material culture into the Greek and Latin classroom that will enhance a student’s knowledge of the language. It also shows how the use of material culture will help a class meet not only the Cultures goal of the new Standards, but also the Connections, Comparisons, and Communication goals. KEYWORDS Roman coins, material culture, inscriptions, maps, house plans, Standards, Greek vases A student starting French or Spanish can hold a short conversation in the target language after just one week of class. What can we offer students beginning their journey in ancient Greek or Latin? This article will demonstrate ways to insert material culture into high school and college Greek and Latin classrooms through inscriptions on Greek vases and Roman coins and through the exploration of maps and plans. -
