  • Lithuanian Literature in 1918–1940: the Dynamics of Influences and Originality
340 INTERLITT ERA RIA 2018, 23/2: 340–353 VANAGAITĖ Lithuanian Literature in 1918–1940: The Dynamics of Influences and Originality GITANA VANAGAITĖ Abstract. Lithuanian independence (1918–1940), which lasted for twenty- two years, and its symbolic center, the provisional capital Kaunas, have been very important for the country’s political, social, and cultural identity. In 1918, changes in the social, economic, and political status of an individual as well as transformations in the literary field followed the change of the political system. In what ways the relationship between the center and the periphery and the spheres of literary influences were altered by the new forms of life? Lithuania, the former geographic periphery of tsarist Russia, after the change of the political system became a geographical and cultural periphery of Europe. Nevertheless, political freedom provided an opportunity to use the dichotomy of center-periphery creatively. Lithuanian writers, who suddenly found them- selves living in Europe with old cultural traditions, tried to overcome the insignificance of their own literature, its shallow themes and problems by “borrowing” ideas and ways to express them. In fact, the imitation was not mechanical, so the new influences enabled writers to expand significantly the themes and forms of Lithuanian literature. The article examines the development of new cultural centers in inde- pendent Lithuania. It also discusses the avant-garde movement which emerged under the influence of Russian futurists and German expressionists. In addition, it focuses on individual authors, such as Antanas Vaičiulaitis, Kazys Binkis and Petras Cvirka, and the influence that affected their works. Keywords: center; periphery; literary influence; host culture Center and Periphery in Literature The word periphery translated from the Latin (peripherīa) means “a circle.” In turn, this Latin word is related to two Greek words, perí, which means “around,” and pherein – “to carry”.

Methis. Studia humaniora Estonica 2014, nr 13 DOI: 10.7592/methis.v10i13.1302 Karl Ristikivi ajalooliste romaanide sari: võrdlus Dante Alighieri „Jumaliku komöödiaga“ 1 Krista Keedus Märksõnad: Karl Ristikivi, ajaloolised romaanid, gootika, „Jumalik komöödia“ Sissejuhatus Käesoleva kirjutise eesmärgiks on anda ülevaade Dante Alighieri suurteosest „Jumalik komöödia“ ajendatud motiivistikust Karl Ristikivi ajalooliste romaanide sarjas. Pseudo-Dionysiose traktaadis „Theologia mystica“ esitatud kujutluse kohaselt on Jumal mitteloodud algne valgus. Ülimast olendist väljavoolav kiirgus loob hierarhilise korras- tatud maailma. Eri tasanditel asetsevad maised olendid on võimelised jumalikku valgust vastu võtma ja edasi andma vastavalt oma asendile hierarhias. Kõrgemad olendid on valguse vastuvõtmisel ja peegeldamisel ehk jumaliku tõe tunnetamisel võimekamad kui alumiste tasandite omad. Loodud olenditelt liigub valgus omakorda tagasi Jumala juurde. Eri tasandite olendid on seotud armastusega, tekitades korrapärase ühtekuuluva maailma. Gootika on selguse, loogika ja kasvava kiirguse kunst. (Duby 1999: 134–145.) Gooti katedraal üritab edasi anda terviklikku maailma, eraldades loodu mitmekesisusest jumaliku plaani (Duby 1999: 199).

  • Itineraries of Jewish Actors During the Firs
ABSTRACT Reconstructing a Nomadic Network: Itineraries of Jewish Actors during the First Lithuanian Independence !is article discusses the phenomenon of openness and its nomadic nature in the activities of Jewish actors performing in Kaunas during the "rst Lithuanian independence. Jewish theatre between the two world wars had an active and intense life in Kaunas. Two to four independent theatres existed at one time and international stars were often touring in Lithuania. Nevertheless, Lithuanian Jewish theatre life was never regarded by Lithuanian or European theatre society as signi"cant since Jewish theatre never had su#cient ambition and resources to become such. On the one hand, Jewish theatre organized itself in a nomadic way, that is, Jewish actors and directors were constantly on the road, touring from one country to another. On the other hand, there was a tense competition between the local Jewish theatres both for subsidies and for audiences. !is competition did not allow the Jewish community to create a theatre that could represent Jewish culture convincingly. Being a theatre of an ethnic minority, Jewish theatre did not enjoy the same attention from the state that was given to the Lithuanian National !eatre. !e nomadic nature of the Jewish theatre is shown through the perspective of the concept of nomadic as developed by Deleuze and Guattari. Keywords: Jewish theatre, Kaunas, nomadic, "rst Lithuanian independence, Yiddish culture.
