The final version of record is available only from the publishers, Taylor and Francis: http://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/23256249.2017.1395530 The Extraordinary Recent History of Holocaust Studies in Lithuania Dovid Katz Department of Philosophy and Cultural Studies, Faculty of Creative Industries, Vilnius Gediminas Technical University, Vilnius, Lithuania ABSTRACT KEYWORDS The paper argues that the recent history of Holocaust Studies in Holocaust in Lithuania; Lithuania is characterized by major provision (for research, Prague Declaration (2008); teaching and publishing) coming from state-sponsored agencies, Green House (Vilnius); particularly a state commission on both Nazi and Soviet crimes. Double Genocide Problematically, the commission is itself simultaneously active in revising the narrative per se of the Holocaust, principally according to the ‘Double Genocide’ theories of the 2008 Prague Declaration that insists on ‘equalization’ of Nazi and Soviet crimes. Lithuanian agencies have played a disproportionate role in that declaration, in attempts at legislating some of its components in the European Parliament and other EU bodies, and ‘export’ of the revisionist model to the West. Much international support for solid independent Lithuanian Holocaust researchers and NGOs was cut off as the state commission set out determinedly to dominate the field, which is perceived to have increasing political implications in East-West politics. But this history must not obscure an impressive list of local accomplishments. -

The article discusses the notion of the Other as it reveals itself through the content of the Lithuanian R press media in the time period between 1926 and 1940. Articles describing the performances of the Lithuanian R ESENTATION OF “THE OF ESENTATION National Theatre are discussed. The content of these articles shows that Russian artists working in independent DU NALISM Lithuania were considered as a dangerous Other who exploits Lithuania ideologically and economically. Although such artists as Andrius Oleka-Žilinskas, Mikhail Chekhov, Vera Solovjova and others came to work in Kaunas in order to escape the Soviet regime, they were accused in Lithuania as being pro-Bolshevik and pro-Communist. The research shows that Lithuanian theatre journalists only considered Russians as dangerous to the young independent state but not Jewish or Polish artists. One can presume that Lithuania feared the communist regime R so much that it tried to avoid any collaboration, including this with artists, which could harm the development of THE ING the independent state. In spite that Russian theatre artists enriched Lithuanian National Theatre, they were forced to leave Lithuania and never come back. Although a number of initiatives to preserve the “sung folklore” of the Nazi ghettos and camps were undertaken soon after the end of the Second World War, Kaczerginski’s magnum opus, the anthology Lider fun di getos un lagern (Songs of the Ghettos and Camps), published in New York in 1948, remains unsurpassed to this day as a resource for research in the field of Jewish folk and popular music of the Holocaust period. ii Chapter one of the dissertation recounts Kaczerginski’s life story, from his underprivileged childhood in Vilna, Imperial Russia (present-day Vilnius, Lithuania), to his tragic early death in Argentina. -

Art and Culture in Contemporary Israel Class code CORE-UA 9764 Instructor Details Aviv Livnat Prerequisites None Class Description The location of Israel at the geographic junction between the West and the East, between the Arab world and the Western world, against the background of the long historical complexity of this piece of land provides the context for the course Expressive Culture: Art and Culture in Contemporary Israel" which will offer a panoramic view of expressive cultures in modern Israel. This course will provide an introduction to Israeli culture and art by examining thematic crossroads and ideas, via problems and social conflicts which lie at the heart of those art works and are reflected by them. Themes to be addressed will include: religion and secularism, universalism/globalism versus localism, Jews and Arabs, Ashkenazic and Sephardic cultures, multiculturalism in Israel, Zionism and Post-Zionism, right and left political world views, questions of gender, historical perspectives on war and peace and the Holocaust. The students will explore the way different forms of art – visual, literary, and performance – reflect and shape the understanding of the "Israeli mosaic" while learning about the way the artists and writers internalize, consciously and unconsciously the complex Israeli reality. Towards this end, the course will incorporate an exclusive audiography, image bank and collection of video materials and will include excursions to cultural institutions and events in Tel Aviv-Jaffa. Expressive culture is a way to embody, analyze and express culture through sensory experiences such as movements, sounds texts and images. The students will be invited to engage in processes, exposed to ideas and emotions, bound within the social production of aesthetic forms and performances in Israeli life and culture. -
