Believe me, its a very popular name for guys in the English speaking Western world.) I am the maker of this zine called "Whirl Fang," a most excellent fanzine for Escapism, Enlightenment, and just having a blazing ball of fun. I also want to make Indie Libre SciFi/Fantasy movies, along w/ manga-like comix, tabletop roleplaying games, skirmish wargames, solo gaming stuff, random goodies, etc. I have Autism, ADHD, OCD, and Sensory Integration Dysfunction, and I'm also a Left- Libertarian/Mutualist/Individualist Anarchist, Agnostic/Panthiest/Deist, & Secular/Non-Traditional Pro-Life Weeaboo from the American Pacific Northwest, where I righthfully belong. I am big into video games, movies (especially SciFi/Fantasy ones with rebellious outlaw heroes that triumph against oppressive elite empires), Japanese Anime(cartoons)/Manga(comix), roleplaying games (both video game & tabletop forms), tabletop skirmish wargaming, solo gaming, the DIY ethic, Free/Libre & Open Source Technology and Arts, and of course my most favorite thing in the world, CATS! Sample file TThhee DDaawwnn ooff WWhhiirrll FFaanngg Wriitten & Presented by RLS89ZX Hello there, most amazing readers. Feel welcome to learn, read, and enter into the odd, but most excellent world of the zine. So many people are so fascinated with these “so-called” zines. Since there will be some random newcomers out there who will ask themselves this obvious question, “what are zines?” The best way to answer this question, a zine is simply an “alternative” magazine published outside mainstream publishing, and these can be done independently as a hobby that can become your job someday. To tell you the truth, zines are self-published magazines of the amateur-press industry/DIY society. The coolest thing about zines is that they can be of any size, page length, and also even cover pretty much any topic(s) of your interest if that is your true desire. As a brief example, This upcoming brave new zine will cover an excellent variety of “fun” topics that will blow you away involving imagination, creativity, entertainment, and of course, hobbies,a bunch of all this above, basically, including special topics just for individual issues. Thus, this zine will feature a series of episodic short stories featuring my own original work along with adaptions of classical literature in the public domain such as the classic fairy tales, Mythology, retellings of wonderful novels of the 19th Century (from classic writers such as H.G. Wells, Lewis Carrol, Jules Verne, Robert Louis Stevenson etc.) plus some 20th century era literature (from that century's authors like Frank Balm, Edgar Rice Burroughs, H.P. Lovecraft, Philip K. Dick, etc.) as well as long as these stories fall under either Science fiction, fantasy, fairy tales, or mythology. Every episode for each of these original “episodic” novellas + retellings of the classics will be presented with style. Besides some literature, this zine will cover various hobbies and activities such as tabletop roleplaying games, tabletop war games, and even retro video games. To let you readers know, most of the video games, RPGs (roleplaying games), war games, and other soon to be discussed topics will have more homebrew/indie/doujin games and stuff covered than the mainstream material. The reason why is because you can get a fresh idea for free and affordable alternatives since that homemade fun can have some pretty big advantages over the mainstream aisle of entertainment.

  • The Formation of Temporary Communities in Anime Fandom: a Story of Bottom-Up Globalization ______
THE FORMATION OF TEMPORARY COMMUNITIES IN ANIME FANDOM: A STORY OF BOTTOM-UP GLOBALIZATION ____________________________________ A Thesis Presented to the Faculty of California State University, Fullerton ____________________________________ In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Master of Arts in Geography ____________________________________ By Cynthia R. Davis Thesis Committee Approval: Mark Drayse, Department of Geography & the Environment, Chair Jonathan Taylor, Department of Geography & the Environment Zia Salim, Department of Geography & the Environment Summer, 2017 ABSTRACT Japanese animation, commonly referred to as anime, has earned a strong foothold in the American entertainment industry over the last few decades. Anime is known by many to be a more mature option for animation fans since Western animation has typically been sanitized to be “kid-friendly.” This thesis explores how this came to be, by exploring the following questions: (1) What were the differences in the development and perception of the animation industries in Japan and the United States? (2) Why/how did people in the United States take such interest in anime? (3) What is the role of anime conventions within the anime fandom community, both historically and in the present? These questions were answered with a mix of historical research, mapping, and interviews that were conducted in 2015 at Anime Expo, North America’s largest anime convention. This thesis concludes that anime would not have succeeded as it has in the United States without the heavy involvement of domestic animation fans. Fans created networks, clubs, and conventions that allowed for the exchange of information on anime, before Japanese companies started to officially release anime titles for distribution in the United States.

  • GAMING GLOBAL a Report for British Council Nick Webber and Paul Long with Assistance from Oliver Williams and Jerome Turner
GAMING GLOBAL A report for British Council Nick Webber and Paul Long with assistance from Oliver Williams and Jerome Turner I Executive Summary The Gaming Global report explores the games environment in: five EU countries, • Finland • France • Germany • Poland • UK three non-EU countries, • Brazil • Russia • Republic of Korea and one non-European region. • East Asia It takes a culturally-focused approach, offers examples of innovative work, and makes the case for British Council’s engagement with the games sector, both as an entertainment and leisure sector, and as a culturally-productive contributor to the arts. What does the international landscape for gaming look like? In economic terms, the international video games market was worth approximately $75.5 billion in 2013, and will grow to almost $103 billion by 2017. In the UK video games are the most valuable purchased entertainment market, outstripping cinema, recorded music and DVDs. UK developers make a significant contribution in many formats and spaces, as do developers across the EU. Beyond the EU, there are established industries in a number of countries (notably Japan, Korea, Australia, New Zealand) who access international markets, with new entrants such as China and Brazil moving in that direction. Video games are almost always categorised as part of the creative economy, situating them within the scope of investment and promotion by a number of governments. Many countries draw on UK models of policy, although different countries take games either more or less seriously in terms of their cultural significance. The games industry tends to receive innovation funding, with money available through focused programmes.

Manga magazines keep taking breaks and ceasing publications, and bookstores are disappearing from our streets. Every year, big publishers find themselves billions of yen in debt, and the industry itself is continuing a 14-year streak of dropping sales.

  • The Cultural Dynamic of Doujinshi and Cosplay: Local Anime Fandom in Japan, USA and Europe
. Volume 10, Issue 1 May 2013 The cultural dynamic of doujinshi and cosplay: Local anime fandom in Japan, USA and Europe Nicolle Lamerichs Maastricht University, Netherlands Abstract: Japanese popular culture unifies fans from different countries and backgrounds. Its rich participatory culture is beyond any other and flourishes around comics (manga), animation (anime), games and music. Japanese storytelling showcases elaborate story worlds whose characters are branded on many products. The sub genres of Japanese pop-culture and the lingua franca of their audiences shape Western fandom. In this article, I scrutinize the global dynamic of manga. I specifically focus on the creation of fan manga (‘doujinshi’) and dress- up (‘cosplay’) as two migratory fan practices. The form and content of fan works, and the organizational structure behind them, varies intensely per country. If manga is an international language and style, where is its international fan identity located? In this article, I explore this uncharted territory through ethnographic views of diverse Western and Japanese fan sites where these creative practices emerge. This ethnographic overview is thus concerned with the heterogeneous make-up and social protocols of anime fandom. Keywords: Anime fandom, doujinshi, cosplay, conventions, ethnography Introduction Japan’s global and exotic identity is historically rooted. In the nineteenth century, Euro- Americans performed their fascination for the island through ‘Orientalism’ in Western impressionist art, Zen gardens and architecture (Napier, 2007; Said, 1978). When World War II penetrated this culturally rich image, the fascination for Japan became more ambivalent, characterized by both fear and curiosity. By now, the country’s global identity, which lingers between East and West, inspires Western corporate businesses, art and media as it represents a mixture of spiritual traditions, strong labour and family morals, as well as an advanced technocapitalist model (Ivy, 1995; Wolferen, 1995).
