Klassiker Der Spielegeschichte 5 Klassiker der Spielegeschichte 6 1 IndependentSpiele 18 Oktober 2012 Dr. Stefan Werning | Universität Bayreuth | Digitale Medien | [email protected] Independentspiele • technologische Entwicklung/Standardisierung begünstigen Independentproduktion in den unterschiedlichsten Bereichen – independent film (günstige Tools, crowdsourcing) – independent music (günstige Tools, Web-Radios) – independent comics (Self-publishing, Web-Comics) – DIY-Elektronik (Arduino etc.) Guevara-Villalobos, Orlando (2011): ”Cultures of independent game production: Examining the relationship between community and labour.” 11 Independentspiele: Organisation • Gamejams als spezifische Organisationsform – ebenfalls dezentrales Strukturprinzip • stiftet Verbindungen zwischen Programmierern, Grafikern etc. World of Goo, Crayon Physics Deluxe (Physik) 08.11. The Path (Adaption, Symbolismus) 15.11. Amnesia: Dark Descent, Dear Esther (Environmental Storytelling) 22.11. FEIERTAG 29.11. Façade (Procedural Literacy) 06.12. Cave Story, Spelunky, VVVVVV, La Mulana (Retro) 13.12. Super Meat Boy, Gish (Autorenspiele) 20.12. Castle Crashers (Multiplayerkonzepte) -- Weihnachtsfeiertage -- 10.01. Machinarium, Dream Machine (Adventures, Interactive Fiction) 17.01. Limbo, Knytt, Outland (Plattformspiele) 24.01. Flow, Flower, Pixeljunk Eden, Journey, Proteus (Flow, Kunstspiele) 31.01. Minecraft, Dwarf Fortress (Open-World-Spiele) 07.02. Aspekte seines Privatlebens • künstlerischer Habitus, d.h. Selbst- Einschränkung zur Fokussierung auf elementare Emotionen 20 Jason Rohrer: Ludographie • Transcend (2005) • Cultivation (2007) • Passage (2007) • Gravitation (2008) • Between (2008) • Primrose (2009) • Sleep is Death (2010) • Inside a Star-filled Sky (2011) • Diamond Trust of London (2012) 21 Rohrer: Chain World • Rohrers Beitrag zur 2011 Game Design Challenge über Religion – „We become like gods to those who come after us” – an einen USB-Stick gebundener Minecraft-MOD – jeder Spieler gibt nach seinem virtuellen ‘Tod’ das Spiel weiter an eine Person ihrer Wahl • Spiel als Performanz bzw. performance art – „I can’t believe this is happening, Rohrer thought. He placed the stick in the man’s palm. What he said next was misheard by several people as “Be healed,” but it was actually more of a startled bleat. […] (Spiel-)Erfahrung zahlt sich aus – „Yes, you could spend your five minutes trying to accumulate as many points as possible, but in the end, death is still coming for you.” – “That's me and my spouse in there, distilled down to 8x8 pixels each.” 27 Literaturverzeichnis • http://www.moddb.com/ • http://www.indiegames.com • http://www.tigsource.com • http://www.jayisgames.com • http://www.pixelprospector.com/ 28 .

  • The Formation of Temporary Communities in Anime Fandom: a Story of Bottom-Up Globalization ______
THE FORMATION OF TEMPORARY COMMUNITIES IN ANIME FANDOM: A STORY OF BOTTOM-UP GLOBALIZATION ____________________________________ A Thesis Presented to the Faculty of California State University, Fullerton ____________________________________ In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Master of Arts in Geography ____________________________________ By Cynthia R. Davis Thesis Committee Approval: Mark Drayse, Department of Geography & the Environment, Chair Jonathan Taylor, Department of Geography & the Environment Zia Salim, Department of Geography & the Environment Summer, 2017 ABSTRACT Japanese animation, commonly referred to as anime, has earned a strong foothold in the American entertainment industry over the last few decades. Anime is known by many to be a more mature option for animation fans since Western animation has typically been sanitized to be “kid-friendly.” This thesis explores how this came to be, by exploring the following questions: (1) What were the differences in the development and perception of the animation industries in Japan and the United States? (2) Why/how did people in the United States take such interest in anime? (3) What is the role of anime conventions within the anime fandom community, both historically and in the present? These questions were answered with a mix of historical research, mapping, and interviews that were conducted in 2015 at Anime Expo, North America’s largest anime convention. This thesis concludes that anime would not have succeeded as it has in the United States without the heavy involvement of domestic animation fans. Fans created networks, clubs, and conventions that allowed for the exchange of information on anime, before Japanese companies started to officially release anime titles for distribution in the United States.

  • GAMING GLOBAL a Report for British Council Nick Webber and Paul Long with Assistance from Oliver Williams and Jerome Turner
GAMING GLOBAL A report for British Council Nick Webber and Paul Long with assistance from Oliver Williams and Jerome Turner I Executive Summary The Gaming Global report explores the games environment in: five EU countries, • Finland • France • Germany • Poland • UK three non-EU countries, • Brazil • Russia • Republic of Korea and one non-European region. • East Asia It takes a culturally-focused approach, offers examples of innovative work, and makes the case for British Council’s engagement with the games sector, both as an entertainment and leisure sector, and as a culturally-productive contributor to the arts. What does the international landscape for gaming look like? In economic terms, the international video games market was worth approximately $75.5 billion in 2013, and will grow to almost $103 billion by 2017. In the UK video games are the most valuable purchased entertainment market, outstripping cinema, recorded music and DVDs. UK developers make a significant contribution in many formats and spaces, as do developers across the EU. Beyond the EU, there are established industries in a number of countries (notably Japan, Korea, Australia, New Zealand) who access international markets, with new entrants such as China and Brazil moving in that direction. Video games are almost always categorised as part of the creative economy, situating them within the scope of investment and promotion by a number of governments. Many countries draw on UK models of policy, although different countries take games either more or less seriously in terms of their cultural significance. The games industry tends to receive innovation funding, with money available through focused programmes.

It is a complex process involving art, music, writing, programming, and caffeine, that should be approached holistically. The entire process can be intimidating to the uninitiated programmer, which is why I've written an all-inclusive guide to game design. With the creation of my own original video game, Super Fish Quest, as a model, I analyze each part of the design process, discuss the technical side of programming, and research how to raise money and publish a game as an independent game developer.
