Terry Trickman [TM]: You first or JL: Well I got into video games back in 1981. I was working as an artist I was working at Triton College in River Grove and I got a call one day from a friend of mine, Richard Tracy, who I’ve known for a number of years socially. We played music together and he knew one of my hobbies was playing games war games, cards, and board games all kinds of stuff like that and he had recently taken a job at D. Gottlieb & Co. which was one of the three, four , five pinball companies in chicago. Chicago being the home of pinball and D. Gottlieb invented the flipper game back in the 30s and JM: It was mostly tilt before that right? JL: Yeah, I guess, I guess so that’s all they did All: [laughs] JL: Supposedly, supposedly, David Gottlieb or even probably one of his engineers invented the flipper then right and anyway the video game boom had commenced and a lot of the companies, Bally Midway, Williams, and Stern, had jumped on that bandwagon. -
EXTENDED FICTION in GAME DESIGN Austin Anderson (Michael Young) Department of Computer Science
University of Utah UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH JOURNAL UNMASKING THE PLAYER: EXTENDED FICTION IN GAME DESIGN Austin Anderson (Michael Young) Department of Computer Science INTRODUCTION In any story, an element being diegetic means that it is an element of the story that the characters of the fiction can sense. The simplest example is that of music in a movie; if there is a radio playing music in the scene, that music is diegetic. If a musical soundtrack plays over the scene but is something the characters cannot hear, it is non-diegetic(DIEGETIC). The border between the diegetic and non-diegetic is most commonly referred to as “the fourth wall” (Webster), in reference to the imaginary fourth wall of a play set, where the sides and back of the room that events are taking place in are fully represented on the theater stage, but the opening through which the audience observes the events of the play is an imaginary barrier. This barrier isn’t just literally a completion of the four walls in a traditional room of a building, but also metaphorically separates the reality from the fiction, quarantining both from each other as to not interfere. The problem with this boundary is that it can’t fully encompass the medium of video games. Video games, at their very essence, are an interactive medium. They require some breach of the fourth wall for them to function, as the game could not proceed to tell its story without a player’s input, which is an addressing of the audience due to the necessity of their action. -
Vanhan Videopelin Modernisointi Unity-Pelimoottorilla

PROGRAMMING LEARNING GAMES Identification of Game Design Patterns in Programming Learning Games
nrik v He d a apa l sk Ma PROGRAMMING LEARNING GAMES Identification of game design patterns in programming learning games Master Degree Project in Informatics One year Level 22’5 ECTS Spring term 2019 Ander Areizaga Supervisor: Henrik Engström Examiner: Mikael Johannesson Abstract There is a high demand for program developers, but the dropouts from computer science courses are also high and course enrolments keep decreasing. In order to overcome that situation, several studies have found serious games as good tools for education in programming learning. As an outcome from such research, several game solutions for programming learning have appeared, each of them using a different approach. Some of these games are only used in the research field where others are published in commercial stores. The problem with commercial games is that they do not offer a clear map of the different programming concepts. This dissertation addresses this problem and analyses which fundamental programming concepts that are represented in commercial games for programming learning. The study also identifies game design patterns used to represent these concepts. The result of this study shows topics that are represented more commonly in commercial games and what game design patterns are used for that. This thesis identifies a set of game design patterns in the 20 commercial games that were analysed. A description as well as some examples of the games where it is found is included for each of these patterns. As a conclusion, this research shows that from the list of the determined fundamental programming topics only a few of them are greatly represented in commercial games where the others have nearly no representation. -

Its contribution is by way of a set of grounded theories that help us understand the game players’ mixed-affect emotional experience, and that support ana- lysts and designers in seeking to broaden and deepen emotional engagement in videogames. This was the product of three studies: First — An analysis of magazine reviews for a selection of videogames sug- gested there were two kinds of challenge being presented. Functional challenge — the commonly accepted notion of challenge, where dexterity and skill with the controls or strategy is used to overcome challenges, and emotional chal- lenge — where resolution of tension within the narrative, emotional exploration of ambiguities within the diegesis, or identification with characters is overcome with cognitive and affective effort.
