Parish of St James, Sutton on Hull Sutton and Wawne Team Ministry

Introduction

St James is currently one of four churches that make up the Sutton and Wawne Team Ministry. However the Team have begun the process to change to a Group Ministry. St James will become a Parish church within this group. Presently, any appointment made would be as a Team Vicar, until the change comes about. See the accompanying Archdeacon’s letter for further details on this.

We need a new Team Vicar to guide and lead us into the future.

Vision

Our hope is that:

 our church will grow both spiritually and numerically.  we can attract children and young people to become actively involved.  worship will be enhanced so as to take us into a closer relationship with God, enabling us to be better at sharing our belief and faith with others, not just being churchgoers, but becoming more like disciples.  we can promote unity within the wider church but to be able to acknowledge and celebrate the various differences.  we could explore and develop new ways of doing things, whilst still valuing the tried and traditional .

The Parish and Village Sutton Village is about three miles north east of the centre of the city of Kingston upon Hull. During the 19th and early 20th century it was a popular village for wealthy businessmen to build their large houses, away from the smells and bustle of the city, at that time a thriving shipping and fishing port. The main local occupation was farming, and cattle could be

seen, up to about 50 years ago, being driven along the main street to the farms to be milked etc. The main buildings in the village are the Church and the Methodist Chapel, along with two pubs and several shops. In the 1960s large areas of farm land were taken over by the city council to build new estates to re-house those people from the slum clearance parts of Hull. The village has gradually been surrounded with new estates, both council and private, but it has retained its village Village Village atmosphere, and some of the larger residences, some of which are now care homes. It has an active Conservation Society who work to maintain its character and heritage. The Bridge and modern transport has made the whole area much more accessible, even to Europe via the Ferries. The larger Parish of Sutton lies between the to the west, the Drain to the east. Under the proposed Group reorganisation it would be reduced.

The Team

The Sutton and Wawne Team was established in 1972. It was thought that the population would rise to about 80000 with the development of , Sutton Park and later Kingswood. The current population is estimated to be about 65000.

The two villages, with their mediaeval parish churches, Sutton St James and Wawne St Peter, form the united benefice of Sutton and Wawne. Two newer district churches of St Andrew and St John, together with the Community centre at St Mark’s, lie within the Sutton parish.

The mixture of ancient villages, housing estates, wide rural areas together with some light industrial sites give the benefice its unique identity.

As things stand, the Parish of St James includes the District Churches of St Andrew and St John.

After the likely change to a Group Ministry, St Andrew’s is probably changing to a Parish Centre of Worship and St John’s hope to become a Parish Church, each having their own Parish area to look after. This will mean a reduction in the overall size of the Parish of St James.

Maps, showing these proposed new boundaries, are available for inspection. St Mark’s community hall will remain within the Parish of St James.

Sutton Sutton Wawne and Team St Peter’s, the other Church within the Team will continue as a Parish church within the proposed Group.

St James (1) The church, grade 1 listed, dedicated in 1349, stands in a large churchyard at the heart of the village. Both the old village and St James church are centres of study for many of the local schools. There are three Sunday services and a Communion service on Wednesday mornings, following a central style of worship, details can be seen in the services section. Christmas services draw many people in from the community and whilst many do not attend church regularly they still regard St James as belonging to them. This is reflected in the large number of occasional offices. The majority of the baptisms and weddings in the Team area are held at St James. The policy for baptism is that it is open to the whole Team area. Families come to a meeting with the vicar following the Welcome Service, and are then invited back to the next Welcome Service after their child has been baptised. Children over 5 asking for baptism receive a home visit from the minister. Adult baptism and confirmation are offered after instruction, by arrangement. The current policy for marriage is that marriages take place after attendance at two classes run by the laity, supported by a minister. Divorced people may be married only after interview with the minister and a commitment to the church by attending

(1) services.

During the past year there have been 224 baptisms, 48 weddings, 9 church funerals at St James and 148 at the crematorium. With this high number of occasional offices the other clergy in the Team do share the work load equally.

St James (2) Some of the special services are; Children’s Christmas Eve Service, Easter Sunrise Service, and also a Remembrance Day service held jointly with the Sutton Methodists. We are involved with the local Churches together Group, interacting with the Methodists and Roman Catholic churches. Joint Team services are held at Ascension, Maundy Thursday, and Memorial Services, held twice yearly

. To mark the 660th Anniversary of the Church we held a Flower Festival, which promoted links with the local businesses and the community, as well as bringing in much needed funds. The

Garden Party and Christmas Fair are also major fund raisers.

Church groups include; Mothers Union, Bell Ringers, Flower Guild, Ladies Choir, Craft Group, Extend (keep fit for the over fifties), Community Sale helpers and also the Museum Volunteers.

Next to the Vicarage is the Old School, a grade 2 listed building opened in 1859. This was the village school until it finally closed in 1977, and the children were moved to newly built premises about half a mile away off Leads Road.

The building is now used as an education centre for visiting schools doing projects, meetings, and also houses the Sutton Exhibition and Resources Centre. This Museum holds historic records of the local area and its inhabitants, and forms part of the churches outreach to both the local people and beyond. Visitors over the past year total 1610, of whom 430 were under16 years of age.

(3)

We at St James benefit greatly from the use of the Church Office, in front of the Old School. The office is in fact a Team facility and used by all the Team Churches. A part-time Administrator is employed by the Team to deal with the arrangements for the large number of Occasional Offices, as well as a multitude of other administrative tasks. Through these Occasional Offices there are many opportunities

to touch hundreds of lives.

St Mark’s Community Hall

The first estate to be developed in the early sixties was that now known as Ings Estate, between Holderness Road and the village of Sutton. This estate was originally council owned, but over time many tenants have purchased their homes.

Through the initiative of St James' D.C.C. a building known as the "Bellfield Hall" was established, now known as St Mark’s Bellfield. Regular weekly services stopped four years ago, but services are held at Christmas, Easter and Harvest.

It is currently being used as a thriving community centre, run by a group known as the Friends of St Marks, under DCC guidance and also for outreach from the Parish church. A small chapel is maintained there.

Activities include Sequence dancing, Latin-American dancing, Keep fit, Slimming World, Stop Smoking (an NHS initiative), Ings Ladies Tenants Group, East Hull Urban Arts (a performing arts group for children, who put on shows 2/3 times a year. Movement to Music (Keep fit for the over fifties). Also

miscellaneous lettings for parties and HCC activities. s There is opportunity to make greater use of the community centre as a church centre, and as a base for outreach into the community.

Finance

St James has a steady income from occasional offices. Most of the Team’s weddings and Baptisms are at St James. The Church Hall is very useful for rentals, groups include Sequence Dancing, Badminton, Socatots, Why Weigh(NHS), Towns Womens’ Guild and the church Craft Club as well as children’s parties. The main fund raiser using the Hall is the Community Sale, held weekly which also includes the provision of subsidised lunches, very popular with the locals. We raise funds through the Garden Party and a Christmas Fair. These are seen as both involvement in the community and fund raising. A strong emphasis is placed on personal giving, church collections providing a substantial share of our income. We have some 38 regular planned-givers, and about 20 who use the gift-aid scheme. The Vicar’s expenses are paid in full each year, 2009 £2348.

St James,(together with St Mark’s) contributes about £25000 annually towards the Team Parish Share(£48840), and the upkeep of the Church Office. Last year the Team fell a little short of a full contribution. We always strive to achieve our target. The main charities are: Christian Aid and CMS. The gross income and expenditure for (2009),

Gross Income: St James: £52356 St Marks £11340 Gross expenditure £54891 £15094

St James has an outstanding debt of £4000 owed to some parishioners. This unsecured loan was raised to enable the completion of our Heritage Project. It is expected to be repaid in full by the end of this financial year.

A copy of last year’s audited accounts is available if you wish to

examine them to get a complete picture of our financial Finance

situation.

There are two Church of , one Roman Catholic and fourteen community primary schools, within the larger Parish of St James. Most have good relations with the ministry team. The previous Team Vicar served as a governor at the St James school A member of the PCC is also a Foundation Governor.

There are three secondary schools, and a Sixth Form College, with whom we have varying degrees of contact. There are two special schools as well.

A massive amount of work has been done in schools. Sadly this has not been reflected by large numbers of youngsters in the congregations but seems to have raised the level of respect towards the churches and the Ministry Team.

This is largely due to the efforts of our clergy, ably supported by a full time Schools Liaison Officer employed by the Team, and funded by the Ann Watson Trust, a local charity with strong church connections. The present post holder is ordained and also an experienced teacher. A considerable amount of the school work is done by her, although the ministerial team is involved in schools and in leading collective worship, particularly in the two church schools.

We have a good relationship with all the schools although some use us more than others. Many arrange church visits as part of their curriculum. Usually this is to St James for both historic and religious topics. The two church schools regularly visit their home churches. An integral part of the Locally Agreed Religious Education Syllabus is that schools arrange various visits to places of worship. These visits are welcomed at all of our churches and are very much part of our ministry with young people. Schools in close proximity to the churches also visit to celebrate the major Christian festivals.

Generally the standards within the primary schools are high, this is especially pleasing given the disadvantaged intake for a number of them. The secondary schools are seeing some success in raising standards and improving behaviour.

There is a tremendous amount of scope in the area of school work and new initiatives and expertise will be welcomed.

S ervices and Worship Services at St James: Sundays 8.00am Holy Communion Every Sunday 10.00am Holy Communion 1st & 3rd Sundays Morning Prayer 2nd Sunday Welcome 4th Sunday Holy Communion 5th Sunday

On the fifth Sunday of the month we usually have Holy Communion at 10am if a minister is available. Eucharistic Services generally follow Common Worship Order One, although special orders of service are produced when required.

Evening Prayer is said each Sunday at 4.30pm but this has been temporarily suspended due to staff shortage.

Baptisms are normally held at 12noon on most Sundays. Adult baptisms are usually held during morning service (usually when it is not Eucharistic).

There is a service of Holy Communion each Wednesday at 10.00am. This service is held at St James Primary School once each Term, by arrangement, and involves pupils, parents and staff, as well as members of our congregation. Members of the congregation are encouraged to be involved in reading the lessons as well as preparing and leading intercessions. A small group are authorised by the Bishop to administer the chalice.

Normal vestments are either; alb and stole or cassock, surplice and scarf/stole according to personal preference although occasionally style of dress might be more informal. For special services hoods may be worn.

We have a part time organist at the moment. For those times when no organist is available we rely on technology, using pre-recorded CDs. The hymn book in normal use is Common Praise, but Mission Praise and Ancient & Modern are also available. We hold a CCL License to reproduce words from other sources as and when required.

Services are held in a number of local residential homes when laity sometimes attend and help lead the worship, also at St Marks by request of the locals..

Over the years our parish life has been enhanced by our ‘Away Days’ and ‘Weekends Away’. These occasions have been valued and have given us space to discuss major issues and to get to know each other in a different way. We have ervices and Worship and ervices had the opportunity to experience different types of worship as well as look at

broader issues that confront the Church. S

Useful Information for a new incumbent

St James lies at the heart of Sutton village and will provide a spiritual base for our new Vicar.

The Vicarage, the Church Hall, the Church Office, and the Old School all share the St James campus along the north side of Church Street.

The Vicarage is a detached, four bedroomed house built in 1962. The rest of the accommodation comprises bathroom, two reception rooms, kitchen, utility room, hall, a large study with an adjoining meeting room and a separate downstairs cloakroom and toilet. It has a newly fitted kitchen and gas central heating, a garage and large well maintained gardens.

This house would be ideal for a married priest and family.

There are several schools within the Parish including St James CE VC Primary, Malet Lambert High School and Wilberforce Sixth Form College. There is a good selection of Nursery and Pre-school provision within the area.

Nearby there are good local shops, larger shops and supermarkets can be found at North Point (Bransholme), or Kingswood Shopping Centre. National stores are available in Hull city centre.

Regular bus services link Sutton with Hull city centre, Bransholme Kingswood and Sutton Park. Ings Estate is less well served and Wawne has a very poor service. There are no local trains, the nearest main line station is Hull (Paragon)

some 3 miles distant in the city centre. Useful information Useful

Kingston upon Hull

According to several press reports Hull is a dull place to be. Let us be quite certain that we, the residents, strongly disagree with this uninformed assessment of our City. Historically Hull is an interesting place, granted its charter by Edward I in 1299, it has been an important port for the past 700 years. City worthies include Andrew Marvell, and Phillip Larkin, celebrated poet, and librarian at the for over 30 years. The modern city has light industry and is still dependent upon foreign trade, particularly with Scandanavia, and the European

Union via Rotterdam and Zeebrugge. It has a good shopping area, the new Saint Stephen’s Centre has recently opened, further enabling opportunities for ‘retail therapy’. Rail and road (M62) links with the rest of the country are good, with frequent trains to London, and other places. There are a number of excellent museums, dealing with various topics, for example and the . is a major tourist attraction, not merely an aquarium but an important international centre for marine life research. The old part of Hull has been redeveloped sympathetically around the old town docks and includes a large marina. There are two theatres offering a diverse selection of productions and regular concerts at the City Hall. For those who enjoy peace and quiet there are many parks and gardens, and the shore line of the Humber provides some excellent walks. The beautiful countryside surrounding Hull is well worth exploring, the Wolds to the North and the Lincolnshire Wolds to the south, via the , or the coastal resorts to the east. We boast two Super League rugby teams, HKR and Hull FC as well as Hull City AFC and an ice hockey team. There are many

leisure and sports centres within easy reach.
