A Review of Southern Ocean Squids Using Nets and Beaks
Marine Biodiversity (2020) 50:98 https://doi.org/10.1007/s12526-020-01113-4 REVIEW A review of Southern Ocean squids using nets and beaks Yves Cherel1 Received: 31 May 2020 /Revised: 31 August 2020 /Accepted: 3 September 2020 # Senckenberg Gesellschaft für Naturforschung 2020 Abstract This review presents an innovative approach to investigate the teuthofauna from the Southern Ocean by combining two com- plementary data sets, the literature on cephalopod taxonomy and biogeography, together with predator dietary investigations. Sixty squids were recorded south of the Subtropical Front, including one circumpolar Antarctic (Psychroteuthis glacialis Thiele, 1920), 13 circumpolar Southern Ocean, 20 circumpolar subantarctic, eight regional subantarctic, and 12 occasional subantarctic species. A critical evaluation removed five species from the list, and one species has an unknown taxonomic status. The 42 Southern Ocean squids belong to three large taxonomic units, bathyteuthoids (n = 1 species), myopsids (n =1),andoegopsids (n = 40). A high level of endemism (21 species, 50%, all oegopsids) characterizes the Southern Ocean teuthofauna. Seventeen families of oegopsids are represented, with three dominating families, onychoteuthids (seven species, five endemics), ommastrephids (six species, three endemics), and cranchiids (five species, three endemics). Recent improvements in beak identification and taxonomy allowed making new correspondence between beak and species names, such as Galiteuthis suhmi (Hoyle 1886), Liguriella podophtalma Issel, 1908, and the recently described Taonius notalia Evans, in prep. Gonatus phoebetriae beaks were synonymized with those of Gonatopsis octopedatus Sasaki, 1920, thus increasing significantly the number of records and detailing the circumpolar distribution of this rarely caught Southern Ocean squid. The review extends considerably the number of species, including endemics, recorded from the Southern Ocean, but it also highlights that the corresponding species to two well-described beaks (Moroteuthopsis sp. -

Through maximum-likelihood and Bayesian phylogenetic methods along with a Bayesian molecular clock, we examined the evolutionary history of the group. Ancestral distribution ranges were estimated for divergence events across the tree using a Bayesian approach. We also used genetic species-delimitation models to determine the taxonomy of Allognathus. Results We provided the first molecular phylogeny of Allognathus, a genus endemic to the Balearic Islands. The origin of the genus in the Balearic Islands was dated to the middle Miocene based on palaeogeographical events in the Western Mediterranean. During the late Miocene and Pliocene, several diversi- fication events occurred within the archipelago. The ancestral range of Allogna- thus was reconstructed as the north-eastern Tramuntana Mountains of Mallorca. -

This work focuses on discussing the ecological importance of these sentinel species and their interactions in the rocky shores as well as the anthropogenic impacts to which they are subjected. One of the main anthro- pogenic stresses that affect Phorcus species is fisheries. Topshell harvesting is recognized as occurring since prehistoric times and has evolved through time from a subsistence to commercial exploitation level. However, there is a gap of information concerning these species that hinders stock assessment and management required for sustainable exploi- tation. Additionally, these keystone species are useful tools in assessing coastal habitat quality, due to their eco-biological features. Contamination of these species with heavy metals carries serious risk for animal and human health due to their potential of biomag- nification in the food chain. -

Knowledge of the diet and diving behavior of a species is crucial for understand- ing its behavior and ecology, and also has relevance to assessing the impact of poten- tial changes in behavior or spatial use. Assessing diet for many species of cetaceans is difficult, given that most foraging occurs far below the surface and that stomach contents of stranded animals are rarely available. Very little information on food habits or the diving behavior of melon-headed whales (Peponocephala electra)isavail- able from any region of the world. Although there is a paucity of knowledge on melon-headed whales, more is known about them in Hawaiian waters than anywhere else in the world (Aschettino et al. 2012, Woodworth et al. 2012, Baird 2016). In Hawai‘i, two populations of melon-headed whales are recognized, a Hawaiian Islands population estimated to be close to 5,000 individuals that travels offshore and among the islands, and a smaller, inshore population estimated to be about 450 individuals that is found off Hawai‘i Island and known as the Kohala resident population (Aschettino 2010, Aschettino et al. -

The new species differs mainly in the number and the morphology of the axial ribs and the spiral cords. References . 104 Revision der Tonnoidea (Caenogastropoda, Gastropoda) aus dem Miozän der Paratethys und paläobiogeographische Folgerungen Zusammenfassung Die im Miozän der Paratethys vertretenen Gastropoden der Überfamilie Tonnoidea werden beschrieben und diskutiert. Insgesamt können 24 Arten nachgewiesen werden. Tonnoidea weisen generell eine ungewöhnliche weite geographische und stratigraphische Verbreitung auf, wie sie bei anderen Gastropoden unbekannt ist. Dementsprechend sind die paratethyalen Arten meist auch in der mediterranen und der atlantischen Bioprovinz vertreten. Einige Arten treten zuerst im mittleren Miozän der Paratethys auf. Insgesamt dokumentiert die Verteilung der tonnoiden Gastropoden in der Parate- thys einen starken klimatischen Einfluss.
