A Phylogenetic Analysis of Polygyridae (Gastropoda: Pulmonata) Based on Mitochondrial DNA Sequence Data Nicholas Defreitas University Honors Program Senior Thesis Introduction Despite the increasing use of molecular methods to determine evolutionary relationships among taxa, molecular sequence data have never been used to assess the relationships among the polygyrid snails (Gastropoda:Pulmonata:Polygyridae). This is surprising, considering how large, charismatic and common they are. Polygyrids range across North America, going as far north as parts of Canada and south as Mexico and even deeper into Central America (Pilsbry 1940). There is a particular concentration of these snails in the Appalachian Mountains, where they primarily serve as detritivores and prey for various woodland vertebrates in forest habitats. Yet despite the broad geographic distribution and high abundance of polygyrids in many forest habitats, there is still little known about their phylogeny (evolutionary relationships). Polygyrids are broadly distributed across North America. Mesodontini and Triodopsini are both found in eastern North America (Hubricht 1985). -

E-18071, Granada, Spain Received 14 September 2005; received in revised form 25 November 2005; accepted 21 February 2006 Available online 11 April 2006 Abstract Iberus gualtieranus gualtieranus is an arid-dwelling land snail that needs to use karstic fissures as refuge in order to survive in arid environments. Karstic fissures are primarily on vertical rocky walls. Because displacement is costly to terrestrial gastropods, it is predictable that this snail will move on vertical substrates near its refuges. However, this species eats primarily phanerogam plants, which are placed on bare soil in horizontal surfaces. Thus, it is also predictable that this snail will move on horizontal substrates far of its refuges. In the present study, this contradiction is examined. Results show that this snail moves far of its refuges to forage on horizontal substrates, while is sheltered in fissures on vertical and rocky surfaces. This suggests that the need of a refuge for survive imposes on this species a habitat use based in the alternation of two microhabitats: vertical and rocky substratum when inactive, and horizontal and bare soil when active. r 2006 Elsevier Ltd. En total, es computen 337 tàxons: 287 espècies de gastròpodes (316 comptant les subespècies) i 21 espècies de bivalves. La proporció de tàxons endèmics és del 8% a nivell d’espècie i 14% a nivell de subespècie, i el percentatge de tàxons introduïts és del 4%. Abstract A new updated checklist of terrestrial and freshwater mollusks (Gastropoda and Bivalvia) from Catalonia (Spain) is presented. This checklist includes the new taxa (species and subspecies), the new citations, and the taxonomic and nomenclatural changes that occurred during the last years, which are discussed in greater detail. A total of 337 taxa are computed: 287 gastropod species (316 when subspecies are counted) and 21 bivalve species. -

The process of divergence of the common ancestor of Allognathus Pilsbry, 1888 and Hemicycla began with the separation of the Balearic islands and Kabylias. Our alternative biogeographic hypotheses suggest that the ancestor of Hemicycla colonized the Canary Islands from North Africa, once the Kabylias joined the African continent. A recent molecular phylogenetic study demonstrated that S. largillierti and the two species endemic to Okinoerabu Island, S. erabuensis and S. sooi, are more correctly re-organized into two species that are anatomically and genetically distinct. To confirm the taxonomic status and nomenclature of these species, we examined the available type materials and corresponding descriptions. We suggest that the above species be treated as S. eucosmia and S. largillierti, that S. sooi become a synonym of S. largillierti, and that S. erabuensis is reduced to a subspecies of S. eucosmia. We also present revised morphological descriptions of the four Luchuhadra species that range from Iheya Island off Okinawa Island to the Miyako Islands, which are here confirmed as distinct based on both morphological and molecular data. (Iberellus) hispanicus y A. (I.) hispanicus campan - yonii . Además, se redescribe la anatomía del aparato reproductor de A. (I.) hispanicus tanitianus (Forés & Vilella, 1993) cuya descripción original incluye algunos datos que, en nuestra opinión, no representan con exactitud su morfología. ABSTRACT A nomenclatural revision of the species of the genus Allognathus Pilsbry, 1888, endemic of the Balearic Islands (Spain) is conducted in the present work. Particular mention is given to Allognathus (Allognathus) grateloupi , A. (Iberellus) hispanicus and A. (I.) hispanicus campanyonii . Furthermore, we include a redescription of the reproductive apparatus of A. (I.) hispanicus tanitianus (Forés & Vilella, 1993) as the original description does not repre - sent accurately, in our opinion, the morphology of the reproductive apparatus. INTRODUCCIÓN Allognathus Pilsbry, 1888, es un Debido a su gran variabilidad conquio - género originalmente endémico del lógica y al aislamiento geográfico, se archipiélago Balear, que se encuentra han descrito hasta 9 taxones nominales presente en todas las islas principales y para el género. Uno de estos taxones en varios de sus islotes periféricos también ha sido citado en Cataluña y (GASULL , 1963; B ECKMANN , 2007 ).
