The Wines of Tenuta Dell'ornellaia Tasting THE WINES OF TENUTA DELL’ ORNELLAIA A TASTING AT ROBERSON WINE THURSDAY NOVEMBER 6th 2008 ORNELLAIA THE ESTATE TENUTA DELL’ ORNELLAIA The name ‘Super-Tuscan’ has become one of the most over used (and abused) in today’s wine world - but for the couple of estates that inspired the phrase it sll very much applies. Ornellaia and its neighbour Sassicaia inspired a wave of copycats and demonstrated the excellence that the terroir of Bolgheri can produce. Although Ornellaia cannot claim to be the original Super-Tuscan, it most certainly has a valid claim to being the best. The estate was founded by Lodovico Annori in 1981 next-door to Sassicaia, where vines had been planted in 1965 using internaonal variees such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. The Annori family (one of Tuscany’s richest and most influenal in wine terms) had watched these developments closely and in 1971 they released their own ‘Vino di Tavola’ called Tignanello. 10 years later, Lodovico Annori purchased a 97 hectare estate just outside the Medievil village of Bolgheri, and plant- ed the vineyards with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Pet Verdot. Lodovico was close to Sassicaia in a number of ways. First and foremost they are neighbours and share similar terroir that is ideal for the culvaon of Bordelais varietals. In addion to this there was a family connecon - Lodovico’s aunt Clarice had married Marchese Mario Incisa della Roc- chea, the owner of Tenuta San Guido (the estate where Sassicaia is made), and his brother Piero had been consulng on the producon of Sassicaia for many years. Lodovico oversaw the development of the estate from the first vintage in 1985 through to 1999, when he (somewhat controversially) sold it to the Mondavi family of California. The Italian establishment were not at all happy about this development, even when Mondavi subsequently sold 50% of the shares to the Frescobaldi family. In 2005 Mondavi Wines was bought by Constellaon Brands, who in turn decided to sell the remaining share or Ornel- laia to the Frescobaldis. Winemaker Axel Heinz took the reigns from Tibor Gal (who helped Lodovico set up the estate) and connues to work alongside Michel Rolland - the roving wine-maker and consultant from Bordeaux who has been working with Ornellaia since the very beginning. ORNELLAIA THE WINES LE VOLTE Le Volte is a blend of 50% Sangiovese, with the remainder being a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. In 2006 this worked out as 32% Cab and 18% Merlot. Since the inaugural vintage in 1991 it has gone on to become very popular with con- sumers looking to sample Ornellaia’s winemaking experse without the hey price tags. Aer vinificaon the wine is aged for 10 months in 2-4 year-old French oak barrels that had previously been used for Masseto and Ornellaia. Available Retail price Tasng price 2006 Le Volte 60 £19.95 Btl: £17.96 Case: £16.96 LE SERRE NUOVE Unlike Le Volte which uses fruit bought in from high quality growers around Bolgheri, Serre Nuove is the ‘second wine’ of Ornellaia and was born in 1997 with the intenon of fulfilling the same role that similar wines in Bordeaux have dome for many years. Once the different parcels of fruit from the Ornellaia vineyards have been vinified and selecon is made of those barrels that are deemed to have the most potenal for ageing. These will go into the producon of the estate wine and the ones that don’t quite make the cut (but are of course of a very high standard) are boled to become Le Serre Nuove. The blend for the 2006 vintage was 50% Merlot, 35% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Caber- net Franc, 6% Pet Verdot, aged for 15 months in French barriques (25% new). Available Retail price Tasng price 2006 Le Serre Nuove 60 £39.95 Btl: £35.96 Case: £33.96 ORNELLAIA THE WINES ORNELLAIA The flagship wine of Tenuta dell’ Ornellaia is this eponymous cuvee that is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Pet Verdot. The vines were planted in 1982 and the first release was in 1985. Since then Ornellaia has gone on to be recognised as one of the very best red wines, being voted #1 wine in the world by Wine Spectator magazine in 2001. The blend usually comprises two thirds Cabernet Sauvignon, one third Merlot, with small amounts of Franc and Verdot used to add complexity. The exact blend changes every year, as does the % of new oak, although it is usually aged for 18 months before boling. Available Retail price Tasng price 1993 Ornellaia 1 £115.00 Btl: £103.50 Case: £97.75 1998 Ornellaia 4 £180.00 Btl: £162.00 Case: £153.00 1999 Ornellaia 2 £180.00 Btl: £162.00 Case: £153.00 2000 Ornellaia 1 £165.00 Btl: £148.50 Case: £140.25 2001 Ornellaia 1 £153.00 Btl: £137.70 Case: £130.05 2005 Ornellaia 10 £130.00 Btl: £117.00 Case: £110.50 ORNELLAIA THE WINES MASSETO Part of the sprawling Ornellaia estate is a vineyard called Masseto that was idenfied early on as being ideally suited to the culvaon of Merlot. In actual fact the early signs were so promising that in 1986 Lodovico decided to vinify the Merlot from this site (just 7ha) separately and the result was a stunning wine that has gone on to be compared with Pomerol’s Chateau Petrus. Aer a very strict selecon, the wine is aged for 24 months in 100% new oak barrels. In the ‘86 vintage the wine was labelled simply as ‘Merlot’, but the Masseto name was given to the cuvee in 1987. Available Retail price Tasng price 2000 Masseto n/a £440.00 Btl: £396.00 Case: £374.00 2005 Masseto 1 £195.00 Btl: £175.50 Case: £165.75.

GUIDALBERTO 2017 Appellation: Toscana Indicazione Geografica Tipica First vintage: 2000 Grapes: 60 % Cabernet Sauvignon 40 % Merlot Analytical data: Alcoholic content: 14,00%, PH: 3,48, Total acidity: 5,95, Residual sugar content: 0,13 g/l Type of soils: The soils have various and composite morphological characteristics with a strong presence of calcareous areas rich in galestro and pebbles and partially clay. They are located at an altitude between 100 and 300 meters above sea level, with exposure to South / South-West. Training system: Spurred cordon Plants density: 6,250 vines per hectare Climatic trend and characteristics of the vintage: A very hot year that will probably be remembered as one of the driest after 2003. Although the autumn started with rains and temperatures above the seasonal average, December and January were very cold with freezing temperatures during the day, accentuated by strong northern winds and no rain. The cold temperatures contributed to the natural elimination of pests and fungal diseases of the vine. The low rainfall of the winter season was not enough to supply the water resources of the subsoil. From March the temperatures started to rise and spring begun during the first week of April with beautiful sunny days. Except for some sporadic rains, spring was characterized by a particularly dry climate. In mid-May the temperatures were often above seasonal average. Summer months were characterized by sunny days and hot temperatures. Fortunately, the daytime sea breezes, alternating with nocturnal winds coming from inland, brought refreshment to the vines. This prevented them from suffering the lack of water or thermal stress.

  • Wines of St Emilion Tasting
THE 1er GRAND CRU CLASSÉ (B) WINES OF ST EMILION A TASTING AT ROBERSON WINE THURSDAY NOVEMBER 20th 2008 ST EMILION THE PLACE ST EMILION The beauful town and UNESCO world heritage site of St Emilion gives its name to one of the wine world’s most lauded (set of) appellaons. Situated on the right bank of the Dordogne River, the town is located high on an escapment overlooking the river to the south, Pomerol to the west and the Cotes and other satellite appellaons (Lussac-St-Emilion and Cotes de Casllon etc) on the plains to the north. This large area is fascinangly diverse, both in terms of the terroir and the quality of the wines produced across the commune. Merlot is the common denominator for the vast majority of estates, with the variety thriving in the clay rich soils of the region. Cabernet Franc also fares very well and tends to overshadow its more illustrious offspring, Cabernet Sauvignon, which is more at home on the other side of the river. St Emilion has been something of a baleground for the terroir debate over recent years. It is a commune that is blessed with a number of disnct soil types and topographies, but was also the birthplace of ‘les Ga- ragistes’, a movement that used ny yields, modern winemaking techniques and lots of new oak to produce wines of class and concentraon from unheralded vineyard sites. While the debate sll rages on the importance of terroir, it is seen by many to be far from coincidental that the top performing estates are situated in the prime locaons.

  • Guidalberto Toscana IGT 2016
TENUTA SAN GUIDO Guidalberto Toscana IGT 2016 REGION: Italy / Tuscany GRAPES: 60 % Cabernet Sauvignon 40 % Merlot Guidalberto is from the producers of the legendary Sassicaia. Grapes are harvested and transported to an independent cellar. Fermentation takes place separately for each variety in temperature-controlled steel vats before undergoing maceration. The wine is aged in French and American oak barrels and refined in bottle before release. HARVEST NOTE The 2016 vintage is considered one of the best of the last decade. The year began with a rather rainy winter and low temperatures toward the end of the season, especially in February when rains and cold temperatures were below the seasonal average. In mid-April the rise of the temperatures caused an early sprouting of the vines. The early spring was characterized by an alternation of rainy and sunny days with temperatures slightly below the seasonal average until mid-June, when summer finally arrived with temperatures above 88 ° F. Summer days were quite hot but never dry thanks to the strong ventilation during the day and the very positive climate excursion between days and nights. Thanks to these factors and to the good water supply of the soils, vines did not suffer any water stress. Grapes were well distributed on the plants with an homogeneous size of the berries. TASTING NOTE Ruby red limpid look, the aromatic range goes from red berries and spices to dark hints of tobacco and brushwood. Well-structured and with velvet tannins, this wine will evolve over the next few years. TECHNICAL DATA APPELLATION: Tuscany IGT PH: 3.4 ACIDITY: 5.90 g/L ABV: 14% AGING: The wine is aged for 15 months in French and American oak barrels and refined in bottle before release.

  • Bordeaux Wines.Pdf
A Very Brief Introduction to Bordeaux Wines Rick Brusca Vers. September 2019 A “Bordeaux wine” is any wine produced in the Bordeaux region (an official Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée) of France, centered on the city of Bordeaux and covering the whole of France’s Gironde Department. This single wine region in France is six times the size of Napa Valley, and with more than 120,000 Ha of vineyards it is larger than all the vineyard regions of Germany combined. It includes over 8,600 growers. Bordeaux is generally viewed as the most prestigious wine-producing area in the world. In fact, many consider Bordeaux the birthplace of modern wine culture. As early as the 13th century, barges docked along the wharves of the Gironde River to pick up wine for transport to England. Bordeaux is the largest producer of high-quality red wines in the world, and average years produce nearly 800 million bottles of wine from ~7000 chateaux, ranging from large quantities of everyday table wine to some of the most expensive and prestigious wines known. (In France, a “chateau” simply refers to the buildings associated with vineyards where the wine making actually takes place; it can be simple or elaborate, and while many are large historic structures they need not be.) About 89% of wine produced in Bordeaux is red (red Bordeaux is often called "Claret" in Great Britain, and occasionally in the U.S.), with sweet white wines (most notably Sauternes), dry whites (usually blending Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon), and also (in much smaller quantities) rosé and sparkling wines (e.g., Crémant de Bordeaux) collectively making up the remainder.

  • The Wines of Pomerol with Neal Martin
ROBERSON WINE FINE WINE TASTINGS THE WINES OF POMEROL WITH NEAL MARTIN Thursday 25th November 2010 POMEROL THE COMMUNE Pomerol is the smallest of the great appellations of Bordeaux, but is home to many of the region’s most expensive and sought after wines. While Chateau Petrus is Pomerol’s undoubted star performer, there are many other fantastic estates that make sensational wines from the commune’s 780ha of vines. We are delighted to welcome the Wine Advocate’s Neal Martin to Roberson tonight - Neal is putting the finishing touches to his book on Pomerol and there could be no one better to talk us through the leading estates and their wines. Pomerol is a bit of an anomaly in the Bordeaux wine scene for a number of reasons. First of all, it is small - at 780ha it is about 1/2 the size of the famous Haut-Medoc communes (excepting St Julien at about 1000ha) and just 1/7th the size of next door neighbour St Emilion. It is worth bearing in mind that the Burgundy village of Gevrey-Chambertin has nearly 500ha under vine and with a landscape that is little more than a sea of vines, one could be forgiven for thinking Pomerol should be nestled on the Cote d’Or rather than being back garden to the nearby town of Libourne on Bordeaux’s right bank. It is not just the appellation itself that is relatively small, but also the estates within it. Of the 10 properties that we will taste from tonight, the largest is just 24ha in size (smaller than Domaine de la Romanée-Conti) and half of them are under 10ha.
