2019 Signature Chenin Blanc Napa Valley Winemaker Phillip Corallo-Titus
2019 Signature Chenin Blanc Napa Valley Winemaker Phillip Corallo-Titus The Wine Our Chenin Blanc has a long and storied history on Pritchard Hill®. The original vines were already producing when Donn and Molly purchased the property in the late 1960s. Following a replanting in 2004, we reintroduced our Chenin Blanc as a “Signature” designation – with a twist. While our Signature Cabernet bear Donn Chappellet’s name, Molly Chappellet’s signature graces our Chenin Blanc label. To add depth and complexity, the 2019 Chenin Blanc was fermented in a combination of neutral French oak barrels and stainless steel tanks. Growing Season & Harvest The 2019 growing season began with cool, rainy weather throughout winter and spring, which delayed budbreak slightly and resulted in a robust crop and vigorous canopies. To create the desired vine balance, we thinned leaves and clusters extensively, doing as many as three fruit-dropping passes depending on the needs of each vine. The weather remained temperate throughout summer, followed by perfectly timed warm weather in October. As a result, early ripening grapes like Chenin Blanc and Chardonnay yielded wines with dazzling aromatics, lovely energy and pure, fresh flavors, while our later-ripening varieties provided gorgeous color and concentration, with supple tannins and rich, soaring flavors. Tasting Notes This sophisticated expression of mountain-grown Chenin Blanc offers enticing aromas of citrus blossom, orange zest, subtle tropical fruit, fresh-cut hay and delicate minerality. On the palate it is pure and focused, with lively energy and vibrant flavors of Meyer Lemon and guava that resonate on the bright, fresh Wine Statistics finish. -

The Wine List
The Wine List Here at Balzem we have taken extra time to design a wine program that celebrates the artisans, farmers and passionate winemakers who have chosen to make a little bit of wine that is unique, hand-made, true to its terroir and delicious rather than making giant amounts of wine that all tastes the same to please the masses. WINE NO. 1 Margins Counoise 96% Counoise + 4% Mourvèdre Sattler’s Vineyard, Santa Clara Valley, California 2020 RE-ORDER: $27 GRAPE: COUNOISE [ku-nwaz ] Counoise is a unique menu item from the Southern Rhône, not typically served à la carte but as a spicy ingredient added to blends. It is one of the 13 grapes allowed in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, but it makes up barely a fraction of its vines. There are only a handful of plantings in California, but as it is vigorous and loves the warm and semi-arid Rhône valley, it may be catching on. It is sort of a goldilocks grape, not too dark in color, not too high in acid, tannin or alcohol, and that hint of cracked pepper is juuuust right. WINEMAKER: Margins’ name reflects the idea that vineyards, grapes, and regions can be outcasts just like underrepresented folks in society. Margins is the work of Megan Bell, seeking to give much deserved attention to the “other” vineyards and varietals throughout northern California. Her small project is based in the Santa Cruz Mountains but she has experience all over the world: apprenticing in Napa, Livermore Valley, Willamette Valley, New Zealand, and the Loire Valley, and receiving a BS in Vit and Enology from UC Davis. She works with growers to transition to organic farming by providing informed advice, and assurance that their grapes have a home in her cellar. The Counoise comes from Ed Sattler’s 2.7 acre backyard vineyard planted in 2009 - a hot, dry site with an intense diurnal swing (and not quite enough elevation to make it in the SCM AVA.) They’ve been converting to organic and this is one of Megan’s proudest accomplishments. -

Reservations Accepted | 10/1/2021 1 Welcome to Virginia’s First Urban Winery! What’s an Urban Winery, you ask? Well, we are. Take a look around, and you’ll see a pretty unique blend of concepts. First and foremost, you’ll see wine made here under our Mermaid label, highlighting the potential of Virginia’s grapes and wine production. Virginia has a rich history of grape growing and winemaking, and we’ve selected the best grapes we can get our hands on for our Mermaid Wines. We primarily work with fruit from our Charlottesville vineyard, with occasional sourcing from other locations if we see the opportunity to make something special. We’ve put together some really enjoyable wines for you to try – some classic, some fun, all delicious. Secondly, you’ll see wines from all around the world. Some you’ll recognize, others you might not. These selections lend to our wine bar-style atmosphere and really enrich the experience by offering a wide range of wines to be tried. They’re all available by the bottle, and most by the glass and flight as well, right alongside our Mermaid Wines. The staff can tell you all about any of them, so rest assured that you’ll never be drinking blind. These wines also rotate with the season, and there’s always something new to try. We have a full kitchen too, with a diverse menu that can carry you through lunch, brunch and dinner from the lightest snack to a full-on meal. With dishes that can be easily paired with a variety of our wines, make sure you try anything that catches your eye.
