MINISTRY OF EDUCATION State Department of Early Learning & Basic Education SECONDARY EDUCATION QUALITY IMPROVEMENT PROJECT (SEQIP) SCHOOLS WITH SUB-PROJECTS UNDER THE KENYA SECONDARY EDUCATION QUALITY IMPROVEMENT PROJECT (SEQIP) 1.0. Introduction The Government of Kenya has received financing from the World Bank toward the cost of the Secondary Education Quality Improvement Project (SEQIP) and is applying part of the proceeds to implement improvement of school infrastructure in 110 targeted Sub- Counties. An infrastructure improvement intervention in a school is referred to as a sub- project. Under the project, primary schools were to receive sanitation blocks based on need and secondary schools were to receive classrooms and laboratories based on need. The sub-projects were selected based on needs informed by a school infrastructure needs assessment carried out in 2019. The specific sub-projects include construction of 859 laboratories in 785 secondary schools, 962 classrooms in 561 secondary schools and 1843 toilets (each with 4 cubicles for boys and 4 cubicles for girls) in 1783 primary schools. 2.0. Criteria for Selection of beneficiary schools All schools that were assessed were rated using a criteria that was developed based on guidelines from the Project Appraisal Document (PAD). The schools were then ranked based on a composite needs index that focused on parameters that were critical in determining school needs for infrastructure facilities. Accordingly, lists of schools ranked from the most needy to the least needy with respect to; Laboratories and classrooms for secondary schools and Sanitation units for primary schools were generated. The Criteria and parameters considered for specific school facilities were as follows: I. Selection of Special Need Schools All Special Needs (SN) Schools in the targeted areas were selected to benefit in improvement of infrastructure. Determination of projects in Special Needs Schools was informed by the specific priorities established during the needs assessment. The 1 number of Special Needs Schools that will benefit under this intervention are 60 primary and 4 secondary schools. II. Selection of Secondary Schools for Construction of Laboratories and Classrooms Relevant infrastructure indicators for laboratories and classrooms were included in the data collection tools. The indicators were assigned scores which were used to compute the composite needs index for the respective facility. Selection of Primary Schools for Construction of Sanitation Facilities The parameters (indicators) that were used for sanitation facilities were as follows: • Existence • Adequacy • Availability of facility for small children (ECDE category) • Condition The parameters were assigned scores which were used to compute the composite sanitation needs index for a school. The indices were then used to rank the schools from the most needy to the least needy.     KENYA ROADS BOARD ANNUAL PUBLIC ROADS PROGRAMME FY 2011/ 2012 Kenya Roads Board (KRB) is a State Corporation established under the Kenya Roads Board Act, 1999. Its mandate is to oversee the road network in Kenya and coordinate its development, rehabilitation and maintenance funded by the KRB Fund and to advise the Minister for Roads on all matters related thereto. Our Vision An Effective road network through the best managed fund Our Mission Our mission is to fund and oversee road maintenance, rehabilitation and development through prudent sourcing and utilisation of resources KRB FUND KRB Fund comprises of the Road Maintenance Levy, Transit Toll and Agricultural cess. Fuel levy was established in 1993 by the Road Maintenance Levy Act. Fuel levy is charged at the rate of Kshs 9 per litre of petrol and diesel. The allocation as per the Kenya Roads Board Act is as follows: % Allocation Roads Funded Agency 40% Class A, B and C KENHA 22% Constituency Roads KERRA 10% Critical links – rural roads KERRA 15% Urban Roads KURA 1% National parks/reserves Kenya Wildlife Service 2% Administration Kenya Roads Board 10% Roads under Road Sector Investment Programme KRB/Minister for Roads KENYA ROADS BOARD FOREWORD This Annual Public Roads Programme (APRP) for the Financial Year (FY) 2011/2012 continues to reflect the modest economic growth in the country and consequently minimal growth in KRBF. The Government developed and adopted Vision 2030 which identifies infrastructure as a key enabler for achievement of its objective of making Kenya a middle income country by 2030. The APRP seeks to meet the objectives of Vision 2030 through prudent fund management and provision of an optimal improvement of the road network conditions using timely and technically sound intervention programmes.

    Ancient Afro-Asia Links: New Evidence from a Maritime Perspective

    Ancient Afro-Asia Links: New Evidence from a Maritime Perspective Caesar Bita Abstract Historical records have shown that the East African coast was connected to ancient global trade networks. These early overseas contacts are evidenced by references to trading voyages in the early 1 st millennium AD and in the 11 th to 14 th century AD. During these periods, exports to India, China and the Persian Gulf included skins, horns, ivory and gold, whilst pottery, glass, textiles and beads were imported. Maritime archaeological studies have produced pottery, beads and shipwrecks that have showed links between East Africa and the Middle East, Indian sub-continent and China. Furthermore, historic Kenyan coastal settlements such as Mombasa, Malindi and Lamu were important port towns of call for merchant shipping, as they were strategically sited along busy sea-lanes. This paper examines this historical connection between ancient Kenyan coastal towns and the Asian continent. It explores results of previous and ongoing underwater archaeological research in Malindi and Lamu archipelago that has produced evidence of Asian cultural heritage. The East African coast littoral of the Western Indian Ocean (WIO) is referred to as the "Swahili coast" and its coastline extends for 3000 km from 1° North in Somali to 25° south to the mouth of Limpopo (Morgan 1973; Sanseverino 1983; Kusimba 1999). The dimensions of this coast cover the coastal littoral and the off-shore islands of Lamu, Pemba, Zanzibar and the Comoros (Chami 1998:199-218; Horton 1984; Sutton 1990).

    Chapter 33 When Northern Swahili met southern Somali Derek Nurse Some twelve hundred years an incipient Northern Swahili community had moved up the Kenya coast as far as the Lamu Archipelago, where it came in contact with one or more Somali communities and the isolate Dahalo community. This paper initially uses phonological innovations in the early Swahili dialect to establish the general fact of contact, and then attempts to use sets of loanwords to identify the Somali source. Due to inadequate sources, it has proved difficult to identify the source(s) with certainty but initial contact with Tunni over some centuries, fol- lowed by later contact with Garre, is the most plausible explanation. The Tunni and Garre later exited, the latter leaving strong traces behind in Boni. 1 Purpose The target here is a micro-area in NE Kenya and SE Somalia.1 It was once home to where northern Swahili (including Mwiini2, the language of Brava) and some of its relatives are assumed to have emerged and developed, starting some 1200 BP, amidst a background of southern Somali communities. This has been suggested before (Nurse 1983; 1985) but not examined in such detail. The main differences here are the a) inclusion of Mwiini, b) inclusion of southern Somali (see the list in §2, below) other than Aweera = Boni, and c) stratigraphy of the Northern Swahili Dialects (ND). The analysis involves the use of phonological innovations and lexical borrowing, and includes some non-linguistic information. 1The label “southern Somali” is used in the title solely as a convenient geographical term.By contrast with Northern Swahili, southern Somali is not a recognized linguistic grouping.
