Online: https://www.portforprayer.org/ The Blessing of the Animals

On Sunday, October 6, after the 10:30 mass. St. Irenaeus will again sponsor the blessing of the animals back by the garden by the statue to St. between the church parking lot and the townhouses. Why do we bless animals on or near the feast of St. Francis of Assisi?

The story is told that a hungry wolf was terrorizing the town of near where St. Francis was living. The townspeople were complaining that the wolf ate animals and had now begun to feast on the people. They were terrified. St. Francis went into the woods with a and a few peasants. Soon the wolf burst out from the dense forest to attack them. Immediately St. Francis made the sign of the cross and the wolf stopped and lay down, submissive to St. Francis.

The deal was struck with the wolf and the townspeople that the wolf would no longer terrorize the town out of hunger and the people would keep the wolf fed. For two years the wolf roamed all over town and became beloved by the people. When he died of old age, the townspeople were saddened. True or a tall tale………………that is how St. Francis got his reputation as both loving and being beloved by all animals.

ST. IRENAEUS ALL-SCHOOL REUNION October 19, 2019 Hard to believe but it’s less than a month and the reunion will be here! The Reunion Committee is very excited and hope we will see you all there. It’s been a lot of fun contacting and being contacted by old classmates and getting to know people from other classes. So many memories!!! The wonderful quilting ladies from St. Irenaeus have even made us a quilt that will be auctioned off at the reunion. Thank you, ladies!

For your convenience, a registration form can be found on the back table of church. You can still register online if you prefer. The website is www.stirenaeuschurch.com/reunion. Even if you can’t come, check out the pictures on the website – kids today can’t believe the class sizes!

If you have any pictures from way back when hidden away, now’s the time to bring them out! We’re missing pictures from the classes of 1955, 1957, 1958, 1965, 1966 and 1967. You can either email them to [email protected] or mail them to Lynne Hostetter, c/o St. Irenaeus, 78 Cherry St., Park Forest, IL 60466.

We Need Your Help! It’s Spaghetti Dinner Time

It’s that time of year when we need your help to make our 39th Annual Spaghetti Dinner on October 27th a success. We would like each family to consider purchasing 2 adult tickets. If you cannot attend, please consider making a $20.00 donation toward the Spaghetti Dinner. If you would like to donate a dessert or volunteer your time, please contact the rectory at 748-6891. Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

I hope that you had a Fantastic summer. Fall will be approaching soon and with that the beginning of our PADS season which runs the 1st Thursday in October thru the last Thursday in April. PADS ( Public Action to Deliver Shelter) or SSPADS is a 501 (c)3 nonprofit organization established in 1990 as a response to the growing number of individuals and families becoming homeless in Chicago's south suburbs. St. Irenaeus is one of their sites and has been for Decades.

We are so appreciative of all of the help we received last year from our St. Irenaeus Church Family and other Faith Communities. We are especially thankful for those of you who physically donated your time and/or brought food, contributed money, washed laundry or contributed personal items. Without your help there would not have been a PADS. We are humbly asking for your help again for this upcoming PADS season.

I have a list of those who told me that they would be returning but I need more volunteers. Specifically, I need a A.M. and a P.M. Team Leader for the 1st Thursdays of the month. You only have to commit to a few hours one day out of the month for 7 months and time really goes by quickly. Of course, whatever time you can be available will be appreciated.

On Thursday, Sept. 26th at 7:00 p.m., we will have a orientation meeting in room 8 in the Parish Center for those who may still be interested in PADS and ALL current volunteers. I can be reached at (708) 248-6649.

God Bless! Karren Holloway, PADS Site Manager
