What is Luke trying to Thursday, February 1 communicate here and what connection does it have with Mary? 7:30 am Word & Communion (SJB) 8:00 am Rosary (SJB) Answer: February 2 is exactly forty days after December 25, the Friday, February 2/The Presentation of the Lord nativity of . Jewish law (Ex 13:2, 12) dictated that Jesus, as 7:30 am †Mary & Ivan Schenkat/Mass (SJB) the firstborn, be consecrated to God. This was done by the 8:00 am Rosary & Anointing (SJB) parents as they presented their Son in the Temple. 8:25 am †Catherine Tackman/ Jewish law further specified (Lv 12:2-8) that a mother was All School Mass (SJB) ritually impure after giving birth, and that she had to wait a set 24 Hour (concludes period of time (forty days for a boy) before she was to offer a 7:30 am Saturday) sacrifice to the Lord for purification. The convergence of these two Jewish regulations occasions Saturday, February 3/Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time Luke's account of both the Presentation of the Lord and the 7:30 am †Jerry Wanke/Mass (SJB) Purification of Mary. These days the liturgical emphasis is more 8:00 am Benediction, Rosary, & Reconciliation on the Presentation of Jesus. Luke highlights the role of 4:00 pm †Jerry Wanke/Mass (St. Lawrence) and Anna, two righteous who 5:30 pm †Margaret Torgerson, John Vogel; St. recognized Jesus as the long-awaited Messiah and praised God Francis of Assisi Parish Community/ for being able to see and experience such a Mass (SJB) marvel in their lifetimes. Sunday, February 4/Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time Simeon's prayer concerning the special role 7:30 am †Agnes & Ed Karrels, Ken Pelzel/ of Jesus states that Jesus is "a light for Mass (SJB) revelation to the ." This phrase eventually originated the custom of blessing 10:30 am †Larry & Peg Richter/Mass (SJB) candles on this day which were to be used in 12:30 pm Mass in Spanish (SJB) the ceremonies, rituals, and processions throughout the church year. Thus February 2 is also known as Candlemas Day. This day is indeed a rich feast to be savored.

School News

Happy Catholic Schools’ Week! This week we celebrate Catholic Schools across the nation. We celebrate the love of God like no other school can! You will find us with Crazy Hats and Hair, dressing for Throwback Thursday, making Valentines for Veterans, and Roller Skating. Join us for First Friday Mass and our devotion starting at 8:25 this Friday, February 2. It is a great week to celebrate who we are in lots of fun ways. If you are looking for a school to meet your child’s academic and spiritual needs, give us a call. We have room for more in our family! To close out Catholic Schools’ Week, our students will lead us at the weekend Masses! The Ducks are on their way! This will be our BIG FUNDRAISER this year – replacing the large raffle. We wanted to offer something that would be more affordable and FUN! Buy a duck for $5 – a number will be assigned to you. Then, in the spring – or when the weather gets better – we will have a DUCK DROP! PLEASE sell ducks! Out of relatives, friends, neighbors! The more we sell, the bigger the prizes! The most important thing to know is this – buy a duck – or several – and wait for the fun! Buy them after Masses. You will be assigned numbers for your ducks. Try your luck – buy a duck! Call the school office for more information – or see the flyer in this week’s bulletin! It’s time to start thinking about the ’18 - ‘19 school year. Did you know that we offer PreK3 and PreK4? We also have Extended Care before and after school. Our PreK program offers your child developmentally appropriate activities as well as participation in our Catechesis of the Good Shepherd Program, which teaches about Jesus in a Montessori style environment. Call our school office for more information or to schedule a tour. Of course, our school also offers K-8 classes with academically challenging and faith-filled curriculums designed to educate the whole child. We are always excited to add new students to our SJB family! If you know a family with young children, please spread the word about our school. It is the heartbeat of our parish! Fair! Our Book Fair will run from February 16 – 22 (there is no school on the 23 rd ). It will be open after Masses on February 17 (after 5:30) and February 18. If you can’t visit during those times, you can order on-line. There is something for everyone! http://www.scholastic.com/bf/ stjohnthebaptschool3 Thank you, Michelle Carl, for coordinating our school’s Book Fair! Thanks, everyone, for supporting our school!
