...... Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, After greeting His disciples with a blessing of peace, Jesus breathed on them, bestowing the Holy Spirit and declaring that they could forgive sins in His name. From the time of our baptism, we have been blessed with the gift of the Holy Spirit as well. The Holy Spirit operates in us, guiding us and strengthening us on our mission. May the Holy Spirit bring reconciliation and peace in our lives, in our church and in our world. Today brings the glorious Easter Season to a close … and it’s the birthday of the Church!! Happy Pentecost!!! On Monday we celebrate one of the newest celebrations of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of the Church. Mary is the image and model of the church. She points to the redemption of the entire Church ... she is worthy of honor and devotion. Tuesday is the Feast of Saint Bede, Saint Gregory VII and Saint Mary Magdalene de Pazzi. Saint Bede spent his entire adult life as a cloistered monk. He spread light to the people of England and Germany. Saint Gregory died in exile because of the unity and peace he discovered for his beloved church. Saint Mary Magdalene de Pazzi, a Carmelite nun, taught others to dare to seek Christ in all circumstances. Wednesday is the Feast of Saint Philip Neri. He could “read” people’s hearts. Through study, prayer, sharing and music, he invited others to unite with Christ and one another through love. Thursday is the Feast of Saint Augustine of Canterbury. He was the first Bishop of Canterbury and founder of the Church of England. Saturday is the Feast of Saint Paul VI. He was to succeed Pope John XXIII who died during the Second Vatican Council. He was the first pope to declare Mary as Mother of the Church. He emphasized the preferential option for the poor and said that the church has a primary function to evangelize. He was canonized by Pope Francis on October 14, 2018. I would like to thank the following for planting and cleaning up the parish grounds: Mary Ann Ballant, Denise & Richard Bobincheck and Michele Bozek in Masontown and Rosemary Reagan in Footedale. THANK YOU!!! “Give honor to all, love the community, fear God, honor the King.” (1 Peter 2:17) Question of the Week: When have I avoided the truth? What truth am I avoiding right now? How will I confront and accept it? Our Psalm Response this week: “Lord, send out your spirit and renew the face of the earth,” reminds us that the spirit is a gift to us. Peace, Fr. Bill
LORD, SEND OUT YOUR SPIRIT In today’s responsorial psalm, the Church sings out: Lord, send out your Spirit, and renew the face of the earth. All three readings describe how God has an- swered that prayer already. In the first reading from the Acts of the Apostles and in the Gospel passage from He alone loves the creator perfectly who manifests John, we read of astonishing events that called cowering a pure love for his neighbor. Saint Bede disciples to step out of hiding and proclaim news that would condemn them and change the world forever! In the second reading, Paul’s words reach out into the future to us: We were all given to drink of one Spirit. (1 Cor FEAST OF FAITH Liturgy: Work of the Spirit 12:13) It is our task to truly pray today’s psalm response. It is the Spirit of God The phrase “being filled with the Holy Spirit” who called loudly to the inspired writers of the scriptures may summon forth images that are a bit too intense for and who continues to whisper to us, revealing evernew some folks. They may conclude that when one is filled facets of God’s word, granting insight just when we need with the Holy Spirit, they immediately begin speaking in it. It is by the Spirit’s power that, when Christ’s words tongues, loudly praise God, sing alleluia from roof tops are uttered by the priest, the bread and wine become the and do other demonstrative things. In reality, being filled Body and Blood of Christ and it is surely the Spirit who with the Holy Spirit means being filled with the fullness inspires us that is, breathes in us when, sent forth from of God’s life and in touch with the power and wonder of the assembly, we seek ways to serve our brothers and God’s presence. It is the Holy Spirit that draws us to- gether as a community of faith, inspires us with wisdom and right judgment and turns us from the darkness of sin to the virtues that bring life. (Acts 2:11) Our Parish is very grateful for your continued support especially during this critical time! PRACTICE OF HOPE The birthday of the Church is something to cele- brate, especially in a secular world desperate for more believers of Jesus to become a bolder presence. In the reading from Acts, we hear of God’s Spirit filling the believers with the power to speak different languages. Devout Jews from many regions who were in Jerusalem “Be the Light” with the 2021 Diocesan Lenten Appeal at the time were amazed that they could understand this As we celebrate the Feast of Pentecost and the arrival of group that had gathered. We, too, can allow ourselves to the Holy Spirit, we conclude our Easter season. This also be filled with God’s Spirit so that our daily actions flow means that our 2021 Diocesan Lenten Appeal is drawing with divine messages. Reflect on Pope Francis’ state- to a close.
