Coolant Leak at Housing to Cylinder Head

This PI is being revised to update the Condition/Concern, Recommendations/Instructions and Parts Information sections. Please discard PI0721.

Condition/Concern

Some customers may comment on a coolant leak.

The leak may be caused by either the thermostat housing to cylinder head seal not being squarely aligned to the cylinder head or the outlet seal to the thermostat housing not being squarely aligned to the thermostat housing.

Recommendation/Instructions

Important

DO NOT replace the thermostat housing or thermostat. The seals are available separately.

Pressure test the system to locate the leak.

Thermostat Housing to Cylinder Head Seal Replacement

1. Remove the thermostat housing. Refer to Engine Coolant Thermostat Housing Replacement in SI. 2.

When observed the seal will look twisted. If the seal is twisted, only the seal needs to be replaced.

3. Install the new seal and evenly draw the thermostat housing to the cylinder head.

4. Install the thermostat housing. Refer to Engine Coolant Thermostat Housing Replacement in SI.

Tighten Tighten the four engine coolant thermostat housing bolts to 8 N·m (71 lb in) in sequence (1-2-3-4).

Water Outlet Seal to Thermostat Housing Replacement

1. Remove the engine coolant thermostat. Refer to Engine Coolant Thermostat Replacement in SI.

2.

When observed the seal will look twisted. If the seal is twisted, only the seal needs to be replaced.

3. Install the new water outlet seal and install engine coolant thermostat to the thermostat housing. Refer to Engine Coolant Thermostat Replacement in SI.

Tighten

Tighten the four engine coolant thermostat bolts to 8 N·m (71 lb in).
