[The newly elected Prime Minister ofPakistan, Mr. Syed Yousaf Raza Gil/ani took the oath of office today. He immediately ordered the release of Chief Justice Chaudhry and other detained judges under President Musharraf's emergency ordinance on November 3, 2008. He also urged Members of Parliament to pass a resol?Ation in favour of a United Nations investigation into the assassination offormer Prime Minister, Ms. . Legal Counsel Michel recently wrote a letter to Ms. Bhutto 's husband, Mr. Zardari, informing him that the UN could not initiate any investigation without a request from the Government and action by the Security Council.]

SYED PRIME MINISTER OF THE ISLAMIC REPUBLIC OF PAKISTAN

Mr. Gillani was elected prime minister on 24 March by 264 votes to 42. He was sworn in by President Musharraf on 25 March.

Prior to his current appointment, Mr. Gill ani was elected as Member of the National Assembly from in the 2008 general election. He was jailed in 2001 by anti-.corruption court set up by Musharraf after being convicted of illegally granting 350 government jobs and for excessive use of telephones and cars as speaker. Mr. Gillani was released in 2006 and says the charges w~re politically motivated in a bid to force him to defect from the party and join Musharrafs allies.

He served as health and then housing minister in Bhutto's first government from 1988 to 1990 and was appointed speaker ofthe national assembly in her second term between 1993 and 1996.

Mr. Gillani started his political career in 1978 after the death of his father, Alamdar Hussain Gillani, who was a signatory to the Pakistan Resolution. He was part of a cabinet under the military dictator Zia-ul-Haq, who had Bhutto's father hanged in 1979. But he quit in 1988 to join the PPP, defeating future premier in elections that year after Zia's death in a mysterious air crash.

He graduated with an MAin Journalism from the , in 1976.

Mr. Gillani was born on 9 June 1952 in Multan. He is married and has four sons and one daughter.
