IOM FLOOD RESPONSE 2011: MONSOON UPDATE Situation update

• Badin, Tando Muhammad Khan, and Mirpur Khas are officially calamity hit districts. Till 15th August, 500 millimeters of rainfall count was recorded in Badin. National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a flood warning from monsoon rain for lower , upper Punjab (, , Lahore divisions) and Kashmir for the next 24 to 48 hours and a ‘low level flood’ warning from River Sutlej at Ganda Singh Wala. Needs analysis Floods in Badin, Sindh

• As of 14th of August 86 relief camps were set up in Badin, 63 in Tando Muhammad Khan and 102 relief camps in Mirpurkhas and 48 relief camps in Tharparkar. • Camps do not have enough resources to cater to the requirements of so many affectees. Open defecation is becoming a common problem because of non availability of latrines. This is leading to severe health problems.

Response

• IOM sub office in Hyderabad registered 1,000 affected families for Beneficiary receives IOM distribution of shelter and non food items in districts Badin, Mirpur emergency shelter Khas and Tando Muhammad Khan. The teams distributed 500 shelter and non food item (NFIs) kits in Tando Bagu and Golarchi in Badin. The distribution 500 shelter and NFIs was carried out in Mirpur Khas and Tando Muhammad Khan on Monday and Tuesday. Additional capacity to respond up to 5,000 families is on standby as per PDMA request, • IOM Offices in , and Peshawar are also on standby following the recent NDMA flood warning in coordination with the respective PDMAs and humanitarian partners. • Till 14th August government had provided 5,800 tents to families and yet the remaining need is high.
