NEWS FROM THE STORES

Thank you for all your good wishes for Mike’s operation which seems to have gone very well. Now it’s full steam ahead for our son’s wedding here in Chardstock next spring!

Autumn definitely seems to be on its way now, with nights drawing in and the weather getting cooler, so can we give you a timely reminder that we stock some delicious pies & pasties from both Chunk of & Jon Thorners of Shepton Mallet.

Our local growers of fruit and vegetables are still going strong with this year’s apples appearing as well as the last of the soft fruit and, of course, beans & beetroot. We also have a new range of organic fruit jams and chutneys produced here in Chardstock from the same fruit we’ve been selling all summer, available singly or in a box of 3.

Whilst we’re on things that grow, don’t forget our Violet Farm West Country-produced composts for those autumn & winter pots and refreshing your borders.

In the Post office it’s that time of year when we change gear from summer & travel money to winter & Christmas (sorry!). Just to flag last posting dates for international surface mail are almost upon us. Australia, New Zealand, Middle & Far East are on 5th October. USA, Canada, South Africa, Hong Kong & Singapore are 12th October. European Surface mail & all air mail dates are in November, so no need to panic yet!

As we’ve mentioned Christmas, a couple of “plugs”. We have the 2020 Chardstock Calendar in stock and we’re pleased to be able to offer Chardstock-reared turkeys for Christmas again this year – more details on these next month.

Finally, thank you for the warm welcome you’ve given Katie as she returns to work on Sundays and your best wishes to Jacob until he returns to us in January ’20. As always thank you for your custom and support Mike & Tina 01460 221214 [email protected] or find us on Facebook

Please note that the Mind & Dementia coffee morning has been postponed until further notice. Thank you to all who offered help in any way. I hope to be able to have one after Easter next year. Tina

In case you didn’t know, a digital version of this newsletter can be found on the Parish Council website (chardstockpc.org.uk) under the heading “News and Information”.

The Rector writes …

‘Take care that you do not despise one of these little ones; for, I tell you, in heaven their angels continually see the face of my Father in heaven.’ Matthew 10: 18 There are many events each month within our community. So many people work hard to bring joy to others and to raise resources for important groups and purposes. We are truly blessed in our area by the number of folk who give time and energy to fundraising activities and I would encourage people to support as many as they possibly can.

I hope that the Minster Autumn Fest on Saturday 5th October will have lots of support and be a real success in so many ways – family fun and a new experience for the town.

But I would particularly raise for you an event taking place on Saturday 19th October from 9.00 – 12.30pm in the Church Rooms: Living well with dementia. The purpose is to raise awareness and money for dementia provision in Axminster.

Dementia is an issue which affects us all to some degree or another. We know that there are more than 350 people living within this community with a diagnosis of some of the many different dementias which affect individuals. We all need to increase our understanding of this challenging issue and to raise our sensitivity to it, improve our care for those who live with dementia, and recognise that we can all contribute to improving the accessibility of our town, village, buildings and homes. Small changes in our thinking and planning can really help others.

Making life as positive and accessible as possible for those with diagnoses of dementia, and for their families and carers, is simply the neighbourly thing to do – but it is also the Christian thing to do. Christ encourages us all to love our neighbour and to serve others. Being aware of some of the simple ways we can make life easier for those with dementia and their supporters is a manifestation of that Christian service – and it is not necessarily overly challenging – but it begins by being aware and understanding.

We have some genuinely exciting initiatives in our community to become ‘Dementia Friendly’. I would encourage us all to find out more and perhaps become ‘Dementia Friends’ https://www.dementiafriends.org.uk

I wish you a wonderful October.

With thoughts and prayers Rev’d Clive Sedgewick October 2019

CHARDSTOCK COMMUNITY HALL TRUST

It has been a pretty hectic month for Trustees, particularly for Jack, as work to improve the Community Hall has been taking place and several unforeseen difficulties encountered. With a deadline for a wedding party on the14th of the month it was all hands on deck to get the Hall cleaned and painted after the invasion of workmen. Trustees wish to thank those villagers who turned out, rolled up their sleeves and joined in with the clean-up and painting, with the end result that the Hall was up and running, and looking very much smarter, in time for September bookings.

Not everything runs smoothly, however. Having just installed the new ceiling there was a leak in the roof in that heavy rain, and there is still a lot of wiring to be replaced in the Youth Club end.

We do hope that many of you will come and join in the fun on the 19th October for the ‘SEVENTIES DINNER AND DISCO’

A three course meal will be served, with a vegetarian option; there will be a wine bar and raffle and spot prizes. The disco won’t begin until after the meal so we can enjoy conversation with friends! Tickets cost £10.00 and can be bought from the shop or from any Trustee as listed below. Seventies dress is optional but if you can still squeeze into anything you wore in the ‘70s, why not flaunt it? All profits from this event will go towards the cost of running and maintaining the Hall and towards further small improvements, so come and have fun and support your village hall at the same time. Contacts for tickets or enquiries: - Lynne 221087, Freda 221504, Les and Sue 391407, Jack 220367, Vaughan and Shirley 221684 or ask any Trustee. CG

ANYONE FOR SCRABBLE OR RUMMIKUB OR CRIBBAGE?

The Trustees of the Community Hall are looking for new ways to increase its use, particularly by our villagers. Now that autumn is here, one such idea is a “games” afternoon once a month in the committee room. We could offer Scrabble, Rummikub, cribbage or any other board/card game that interests people, playing for a couple of hours with a cup of tea or coffee and some cake. The charge would probably be £2.50 with all the “profits” going to the Hall funds. Initially we would like to know if anyone is interested in this idea. If you are, or would like to know more about it, please email or phone me, Shirley Fletcher. [email protected] 01460 221684

CHARDSTOCK PARISH COUNCIL NEWS [email protected] www.chardstockpc.org.uk

Parish Council meeting, Wednesday 11th September 2019 Full minutes can be seen on the website.

COMMUNITY HALL IMPROVEMENTS The main improvements to the hall were completed (almost) on schedule at the end of August. There is now a brand-new, well-insulated suspended ceiling with LED dimmable lights and an up-to-date heating system that doesn’t need to be running constantly through the winter months to keep the hall warm and which will provide air conditioning in summer if required. The stage lighting has also had a comprehensive refit. However, there remains quite a lot of remedial work to be done to bring the rest of the electrics up to current safety standards, and the contractors will be operating around the current bookings to complete this.

The Parish Council has obtained funding specifically for the project from the following sources:

£33,000 loan from the Public Works Loan Board, repayable over 20 years at 1.5% interest (the hall will be paying all the interest, so there is no direct cost to the council taxpayers) £5000 grant from East District Council Community Building Fund £3375 from the Community Infrastructure Levy £2500 grant from ’s Locality Fund (Cllr Chubb) £2300 grant from Devon County Council’s Invest in Devon

Alongside the major works, the Hall Trustees have funded new flooring and cubicles in the toilets, making the facilities more pleasant to use.

It is hoped that further improvements to the hall over the next few years will include the installation of solar panels on the roof, so that electricity costs (prohibitive in the last financial year, at around £6000) will be minimal. The Parish Council has applied to the People’s Postcode Lottery for a grant for this and has reached the second stage of the application.

NATURE IN OCTOBER

When humans worry about their weight it is usually because they are afraid they are getting too fat. For those mammals that hibernate, October is the time for getting as fat as you can. The wealth of berries, nuts and seeds is just what they need. That beautiful but elusive animal the dormouse can double its body weight in the last month or so before it comes down from the trees to go to sleep for the winter. Bats keep flying and feeding until the nights get too cold for the insects on which they rely. A key source of food for them in the autumn is crane flies. There are many species, most of them smaller than the familiar “daddy long legs” and just right for a bat stocking up for hibernation. Even those animals that do not hibernate, like squirrels and wood mice, take advantage of the abundance of food by caching nuts to come back to when the frost and snow are making foraging difficult.

Hedges are full of fruits, berries and nuts. The sheer variety of ways that plants wrap up their seeds is a source of delight to us and to wildlife. Birds tend to eat the juiciest and ripest berries first. It is noticeable that they take the red berries off the pyracantha bushes in gardens before they strip the yellow berried variety. The suspicion has to be that they are judging ripeness by the colour and do not recognise that both ripen at the same time.

The very reason that berries are so colourful is so that they get eaten. Seeds can pass through a bird’s digestive system without being destroyed and the bird will excrete them some distance away from the parent plant. That way the plant’s offspring are not competing with their parent. Mistletoe berries are sticky so that the bird even “plants” the seeds by wiping its beak on the cracked bark of the tree.

Nuts employ a different strategy. They are too hard for most things to eat immediately and tend not to be bright colours. They do, however, contain a lot of nourishment. Most fall to the ground where the kernel can burst through the deteriorating shell uneaten. Some are taken by birds and animals strong enough to break them but even then quite a few are buried by jays and squirrels to come back to later. Many of those are never re- found and grow into new trees.

Edward Wells [email protected] Record Numbers Attend the 20th Chardstock Street Fayre

We are delighted to report that a record number of people attended the 20th Chardstock Street Fayre and helped to make it a truly memorable and successful community event. The Fayre, held on 7th September was blessed by lovely weather which enhanced the occasion.

Fabulous live music was provided throughout the day and into the night by the All Saints Off Beats, The Jurassix, Emily Miller, Jessica Claire, Jack Humphries, Miggi, Road House, The Liberty Sisters and Mydep. There was also an amazing performance by Chardstock’s very own Jack Ward Magic with his new show ‘Change’. Many of the performers gave their services free of charge and this is greatly appreciated.

There were over 50 stalls, of all types from home produce to bric-a-brac to arts and crafts and this year Street Fayre was enhanced by joining with Chardstock Vintage Tractor and Machinery Club who held an Auto Jumble/Car Boot Sale in addition to displays and demonstrations.

For auto enthusiasts, there was the ever-popular display of over 60 beautiful classic cars, competition cars, motorbikes and tractors.

The wonderful Family Fun Dog Show attracted an impressive number of entries and classes included Most Fabulous Fella, Loveliest Lady, Most Gracious Golden Oldie, Most Pleasant Puppy and Worst Hair Day.

Other attractions included Garwynn's Reptiles and Bugs, Punch and Judy, children’s amusements, a performance by Chard Evolution Majorettes and a demonstration by Chard and Axminster Wadokai Karate Club. The Children’s Art Project was a huge success and there is a plan to display the creation in a prominent location in the village. A ‘highlight’ of the day was again a cameo performance by Chardstock’s very own ‘Morris Troupe’ the ‘Chancers and Prancers’.

The hugely popular paper plane flying competition, have-a-go at bell- ringing, Garwynn’s Reptiles and Bugs and other activities also took place in St Andrew’s Church.

Since the first Street Fayre in 1999, more than £60,000 has been raised to support local organisations and even before this main event £1,650 had been raised this year from The Chardstock Challenge, The Duck Race and Ady’s Quiz. The Street Fayre Team has decided that this year money will be allocated in the following way:

20th Chardstock Street Fayre continued …

£1,500 Chardstock Community Hall Trust £1,000 Little Acorns@St Andrews £1,000 Devon Air Ambulance. £ 500 Chardstock Park Trust £ 50 Chardstock Newsletter

Organisers certainly feel that the aims of Chardstock Street Fayre, namely to raise money for local good causes and to promote community cohesion whilst having fun, were achieved and wish to thank all those who sponsored, helped with, participated in and/or attended this wonderful event. . Please make a note in your diaries that on Friday, 15th November, the Street Fayre Team will be organising a Comedy Night in the Community Hall. The MC will be Tom Glover and the entertainment will be provided by three comedians. Tickets will be £8 in advance or £10 on the door and there will be a licensed bar. More details will appear in the next newsletter. Graham Vyse ‘The Chancers and Prancers’

There are lots of photos and videos recording this brilliant event on both the Chardstock Street Fayre and the Chardstock Village Facebook pages. AXE VALLEY AND WEST RING AND RIDE from your own front door

This service has been in operation since September 2001 and is a registered charity running community transport for the and West Dorset areas. It is provided for people with a special need for transport facilities because they are elderly, disabled, parents with young children, have difficulty with public transport or live in an isolated area.

The door-to-door service offers passengers security and comfort, taking a lot of the strain out of shopping. The fares are very reasonable, with morning shopping trips to places such as Axminster, Bridport, Honiton, Sidmouth and Chard costing just £5.00 return.

Word of mouth proves over and over again to be the best source of advertising, and many of the Ring and Ride passengers have told both neighbours and friends who have subsequently joined. There is also a Passenger Club for each zone that offers a weekly afternoon trip and a day trip on one Saturday each month and is very popular with members. The subscription fee is just £10 and gives the opportunity to visit various destinations. The following are scheduled for October:

Thursday 3rd Cricket St Thomas Hotel £6 Visit this stately hotel with free entry to acres of beautiful lakes and gardens. Enjoy a cup of tea and cake in the tea rooms – lunch is served until 4.00 pm!

Thursday 10th Otter Nurseries Garden Centre £6

Chardstock Bowls Club Ladies Win County Honours

The village’s Bowls Club has had a wonderful season culminating in Ann Dredge’s fantastic win at the Devon Finals to become Devon Ladies Four Wood Unbadged Singles Champion for 2019. Ann and Rosie Pratt won the Devon Section 3 Unbadged Ladies pairs and Ann teamed up with Gilly Campbell and Eileen Rolph to win the Devon Section 3 Ladies Two Wood Triples.

Our winning ladies, from left to right, Gilly Campbell, Eileen Rolph, Ann Dredge and Rosie Pratt.

Ann, Eileen, Gilly, Adam Dredge and Terry Dredge all gained their County Badges this season. Congratulations go to them all.

In other competitions, our men reached the final of the Top Club competition for the second year running and our Men’s Over 60s Triples B Team narrowly missed promotion from their league. Better luck next year guys!

The club may be relatively small but it is a friendly one. It doesn’t matter whether you are a new member or an experienced one, everyone is treated the same. The honours won by the members this year just go to show that you don’t have to belong to a big club to be successful and compete at County level.

To anyone reading this, if you are interested in playing bowls, the club will be holding its next open day on Sunday 26th April 2020. Vaughan Fletcher

The League of Friends of Axminster Hospital Funding Axminster Hospiscare at Home

Bank Holiday Monday Hawkchurch Village Fete. We made £120 for the League’s Hospiscare@Home and have been promised the proceeds of the raffle to be shared with ARC. Thank you. Hawkchurch. Lyme Bay Ladies Guild held a Coffee Morning at the Hind in Musbury on 5th September hosted by Emma Shrubb. They raised £89 for the League’s H@H fund which was great. Thank you ladies.

The outpatients department at Axminster Hospital continues to thrive with clinics, treatments, day case surgery and X-ray being very busy. Despite rumours to the contrary, the Conybeare unit continues in full operation and following the departure of the matron, Victoria Saddlor, a new matron has been appointed, Martina Dark. Good luck Victoria in your new job and welcome Martina to Conybeare. We look forward to working with you,

The Community Nurses based at Axminster Hospital continue to do an excellent job looking after us all in the area. Thank you ladies and gentlemen.

The Hospiscare@Home Nurses are doing excellent work looking after those in the community who are approaching the end of their life and wish to die in their own homes. This is a superb service and very much needed by this district. With the increasing awareness of the service, referrals are slowly increasing. Hospiscare@Home is for patients of any age over 18 with any illness who are approaching end of life and are registered with the Axminster GPs. It is fully funded by the League of Friends of Axminster Hospital.

Coffee Morning on Thursday 31st October Gillie George and Hazel Cross are organising this in the Church Rooms, Minster Green, Axminster. Halloween costumes not obligatory. Ann Veit - Hon Secretary Telephone - 01297 552376 Email - [email protected]

Teaching Alignment Therapy in Tanzania June - August 2019

We now have a doctor and four nurses practising Alignment in Mbosho Dispensary, relieving people of painful backs, shoulders and knees. It is the first Alignment Centre ever! Many people here gave me jewellery to take for unpaid nurses in the hospital I worked in last year for them to sell. They were so very grateful for your help and I am happy to do the same again when I return if anyone has any unwanted jewellery: Eggmoor Lane Cottage. Meanwhile I have started a fund for a Mobile Clinic for Mbosho Dispensary as hundreds of people can't get to it except by motorbike-taxi and many are too frightened to use them on the rough dirt roads. If anyone would like to contribute, the details are: Nationwide 07-01-16, 14025911. Thank you, Ann Evans. News from St Andrew’s Primary Academy

It was great to welcome everyone back after the summer holiday. A warm welcome is extended to our new Reception class children and their families. We also welcome Miss Emily Mayes who has recently joined us. Miss Mayes is a highly qualified early years teacher and we want to thank her (and her mum and partner) for coming in over the summer to paint the fence in the outside area. After our success with the RHS award Mr Hamilton and Mrs Mortimer are keen to move the garden and grounds project forward. They are running an after-school club on Thursdays where they are keen to get the school garden and grounds looking more attractive. We have a great team of adult volunteers and the grounds are already looking tidier and brighter. If there are any garden enthusiasts in the village who would be willing to help, we would love to hear from them. The club runs between 3.30 and 4.30 pm every Thursday. Please come to the school office and let us know. After school clubs are now well underway and this half term we are able to offer Eco Club, Football, Dodgeball and Tchoukball, Film Club, Gardening Club, Running Club, Construction Club, Maths Club and Forest School. A huge thank you to all staff and parents who are running or helping with these clubs. We are currently collecting tokens from Aldi. If you spend over £30 in store (until 6th November) you are given a Team GB Olympic picture card. If we collect 300 of these, we will get a free sports kit for school and will be entered into a competition to win £20,000. If you have any of these tokens, we would be very grateful if you would drop them off to the school office please. We had a visit from Devon Resource Futures (Devon Waste Management). The younger children learnt about the importance of recycling and composting, and the older children got to make their own power sources to power clocks and lights. They made circuits with wires, nails and copper coins. They attached fruit and potatoes as power sources and were fascinated with the results. Comments such as ‘wow!’ and ‘awesome’ were used by the children. Father Geoffrey came to our Friday Celebration Worship to award prizes for winning entrants in the Village Show. The children were delighted to hear the winners of the painted pebble, origami and the painting of an animal categories. We are currently planning our Harvest Celebration and would welcome you to join us in church for this. Mrs Donna Butler - Senior Teacher Cllr. Paul Hayward, EDDC Yarty Ward - Aug/Sep report

As the summer draws to a close, I thought I would share with residents a few planning matters that have been considered by the EDDC Development Management Committee in recent months.

In Newton Poppleford, a promise of a doctor’s surgery as quid pro quo for 40 additional houses outside of the Built Up Area Boundary has been reneged upon in favour of an additional 2 market value houses. The Chair of the DMC stated, in public, that the developer had acted dishonourably and Cllr. Olly Davey (Green Party) voiced his concerns that developers’ promises on such matters were not worth the paper they were written on! Concerns about inappropriate development in the AONB continue to be voiced by Councillors from all parties and the consensus is that more protection is necessary to preserve our green fields and countryside.

Following on from EDDC's Declaration of a Climate Emergency and a pledge to become Carbon Neutral by 2040 (brought forward by 10 years from 2050), it was telling that proposals for a gas-fired power station in open countryside (Woodbury) was rejected almost unanimously by members of DMC against the recommendation of officers on the grounds that it was not green energy, was likely to cause air pollution and emit unacceptable levels of carbon, and would be a blight on the landscape.

In other news: EDDC launches new Crowdfunding campaign for community groups. Recycling targets continue to rise (62% in August of all waste collected). There is an ongoing consultation on the levels of Community Infrastructure Levy to be charged. Progress with the Axminster Masterplan is frustratingly slow as no decision has yet been made on the Grant/Loan from central government for the proposed relief road. A full report is available on the Parish Council website and I am always delighted to hear from Yarty residents on any issues that you have concerns/ questions about.

And, finally: SCAMS Not a day goes past without my hearing of yet another devious and despicable way that scoundrels have dreamed up to part people from their hard-earned cash! From calls about “BT” disconnecting your broadband, to Council Tax refund emails, HMRC tax rebates, failed parcel delivery cards … the list goes on! Ignore the scam. Put the phone down. (continued on page 17) Cllr. Paul Hayward, EDDC Yarty Ward report (continued)

Tear up the letter. Delete the email. HOWEVER PERSISTENT AND GENUINE THEY APPEAR TO BE. If in doubt, feel free to call me (or email) and I will be delighted to assist you in checking things out. Don’t give your bank details to anyone. Don’t feel pressured into making immediate decisions … there is always tomorrow to make your mind up! Scammers rely on the fear, worry and urgency they instil in you to get you to release your money. Please don’t be a victim. Call me if you need a second opinion on anything. Tell the scam to SCRAM!

My kindest regards, Paul.
