Martin Drake Orchid House Burridge Axminster Devon EX13 7DF [email protected] 1 Summary Chardstock parish is special in an East Devon context for a number of reasons. While it has no outstanding sites, and is barely touched by the Rive Axe SSSI and SAC, it has ten County Wildlife Sites covering a range of habitats, outstandingly clean water in the network of streams and seepages, relatively a large amount of wet alder and willow carr woodland, varied underlying geology giving rise to vegetation and insects assemblages that reflect the range from base-rich to acidic conditions, a dense network of hedgerows and relatively benign farming practices dominated by beef and dairy farms. 2 CONTENTS SUMMARY FOR CHARDSTOCK     Transplantation of a Molinietum caeruleae meadow in Lower Saxony (Germany) B. Gehle1, H. Harder1, D. Zacharias1 0 25 50 100 Introduction Meter The Molinietum caeruleae meadow recently is considered as a rare and valuable habitat according to the Europeans Habitats Directive. It contains a high number of endangered and target species ( e.g. Betonica officinalis (Fig. 4), Galium boreale, Inula salicina, Selinum carvifolia, Silaum silaus, Serratula tinctoria (Fig. 5)) and it is classified as a phytocoenosis that is likely to become extinct in Germany2. The construction of the highway A 39 in the year of 2006 in the county of Wolfenbüttel (Lower Saxony, Germany) separated a Molinietum meadow of approx. 3 ha in two parts (Fig. 1). To protect the meadow a compensation measure was created. About 1 ha of valuable grassland situated directly within the planned highway lane was transplanted in 2006 (sods of approx. 1,5 m2 together with 30 cm layer of the underlying soil) to a nearby former farmland adjacent to one of the meadow remnants next to the new roadway. The substrate of the meadow consists of a seasonally wet Pelsosol which consists of an alkaline Jurassic clay soil. Additionally, on a second target area of former farmland semi-natural grassland was restored by transferring of diaspore-containing hay from the Fig. 1: Compensation measure area Molinietum meadow. A monitoring program has been carried out annually since 2005 by the University of Applied Science in Bremen in order to document and evaluate the success and the effectiveness of the compensation measure, focussing on the following questions: 1.Does the Molinietum meadow remain as a habitat with its target species after transplantation? 2.Is the population size of target species constant? 3.Does hay disposal help to introduce a new Molinietum meadow? Material and Methods Transplanted meadow The effected meadow was separated in different parts for a monitoring program.

Dtptera 1: Tephritidae (Fruchtfliegen) von B. MERZ Zusammenfassung Aus dem Gebiet Gersau-Oberholz wurden in den Jahren 1979-83 und 1989 insgesamt 42 Tephritiden ge­ sammelt, die 14 Arten angehören. Diese Arten sind ausnahmslos Neufunde für die Zentralschweiz. Für Tephritis separata ROND. wird als neue Futterpflanze Picris hieracioides nachgewiesen. 1. EINLEITUNG In den Jahren 1979-83 wurden am relativ warmtrockenen Südhang der Rigi-Hochfluh, in Gersau-Oberholz (500-650 m, Erika-Waldföhrenheide und Eichen-Linden-Ahorn- Eschen-Laubmischwald), Kanton Schwyz, von Herrn Dr. L. RESER (REZBANYAI) mit Licht- und Tagfang sowie mit Bodenfallen regelmässig Insekten gesammelt. In der Ausbeute, die im Natur-Museum Luzern aufbewahrt ist, befinden sich auch eini­ ge Tephritiden, die mir freundlicherweise zur Bestimmung überlassen wurden. Ergänzt wird die Ausbeute durch eine vom Verfasser am 10.7.1989 im Gebiet durch­ geführte Sammelexkursion. Dabei wurden nebst dem Netzfang auch mit Tephritiden befallene Pflanzenproben mitgenommen, aus denen im Verlaufe des Sommers weite­ re Fruchtfliegen schlüpften. Allgemeine Hinweise zur geographischen Lage, Ökologie und Vegetation des Gebie­ tes sowie über die genauen Fangmethoden finden sich bei REZBANYAI-RESER 1984.     HOVERFLY NUMBER 34 NEWSLETTER AUGUST 2002 ISSN 1358-5029 Long-standing readers of this newsletter may wonder what has happened to the lists of references to recent hoverfly literature that used to appear regularly in these pages. Graham Rotheray compiled these when he was editor and for some time afterwards, and more recently they have been provided by Kenn Watt. For some time Kenn trawled for someone else to take over this task from him, but nobody volunteered. Kenn continued to produce the lists, but now no longer has access to the source that provided him with the references. I therefore now make a plea for someone else to agree to take over this role, ideally producing a list of recent literature for each edition of this newsletter (i.e. twice per year), or if that is not possible, for each alternate edition.     CHARDSTOCK ST. ANDREWS CHURCH - BAPTISMS Source: Chardstock Parish Registers and Bishop’s Transcripts Dates: 1579 to 1582 from Bishop’s Transcripts 1597 to 1846 transcripts from Parish Registers, except periods March 1707 to April 1713, July 1713 to August 1714 and August 1714 to June 1716 for which no records are available. 1847 to 1879 transcripts have been taken from photocopies of the Bishop’s Transcripts of the Chardstock Parish Registers, held in Wiltshire Records Office. Where these were unclear, they have been checked against microfiches of the originals, held in Devon Records Office, and altered as appropriate. There are a number of inconsistencies between the two versions; for instance Susan Cozins in the Bishop’s Transcript appears as Susan Cousins in the Parish Register. The Wiltshire records for years 1850, 1856, 1858 1862, 1864, 1865, 1868, 1871, 1873 and 1876 are missing, either because they were not copied originally or because they have been lost. These gaps have been made good from the Devon Records Office, and are included within this transcript. Both Parish Registers and Bishop’s Transcripts are given for the years 1847, 1848, 1849 and 1850. The researcher is strongly advised to consult the original copies at Wiltshire or Devon Record Office, and use these transcriptions only as a guide to what these sources contain. When using this site, the following points should also be borne in mind: Abbreviations have been avoided wherever possible and full stops have not been used in names, thus Wm C. Watts in the register appears as William C Watts. This measure is designed to assist word search software programmes.

Alena Bučánková 2 Biologie, vývoj a zoogeografie vybraných saproxylických skupin orientálních druhů čeledi Stratiomyidae Abstrakt Je popsána morfologie, biologie a zoogeografie larev čtyř druhů z čeledi Stratiomyidae. Dva z nich, Pegadomyia pruinosa a Craspedometopon sp. n., patří do podčeledi Pachygasterinae, další dva, Adoxomyia bistriata a Cyphomyia bicarinata , patří do podčeledi Clitellariinae. Larvy byly sbírány Dr. D. Kovacem pod kůrou padlých stromů v Malysii a Thajsku. Saproxylický způsob života larev v rámci celé čeledi je zde diskutován jako původní stav. Byly vytypovány morfologické a biologické znaky larev s možným fylogenetickým významem a jejich platnost byla vyzkoušena v kladistických programech Nona a Winclada. Zjištěný fylogenetický vztah hlavních podčeledí odpovídá v podstatě současnému systému čeledi. Překážkou detailnímu vyhodnocení jsou zatím jen nedostatečné popisy larev a jejich malá znalost, zvláště v tropických oblastech. Biology, development and zoogeography of some saproxylic Oriental species of Stratiomyidae (Diptera) Abstract The morphology, biology and zoogeography of four larvae of Stratiomyidae are described. Two of them, Pegadomyia pruinosa , Craspedometopon sp. n. belong to the subfamily Pachygasteinae, the others, Adoxomyia bistriata and Cyphomyia bicarinata are placed to the subfamily Clitellariinae. The larvae were collected under the bark of fallen trees in Malaysia and Thailand by Dr. D. Kovac. The saproxylic habitat of stratiomyid larvae is discussed in this thesis as an original state. The morphological and biological characters of possible phylogenetic significance are evaluated and their value was verified with use of Nona and Winclada programs.

The site lies with the AONB, adjoins the Conservation Area and is adjacent to two listed buildings. The applicant is not required to demonstrate a need for the extension or to justify its size (although they have advised it is to enable the applicant to care for an elderly parent), and it is for Members to consider the physical and visual impact from the extension that represents additional living accommodation for the main house, albeit in a detached form.
