The directory records that “The church of St. Andrew was rebuilt and enlarged in the year 1864, with the addition of a north aisle, organ chamber, and vestry on the south of the chancel, and a chapel for the schools: the architect was Mr. Mountford Allen, of Crewkerne, who has contrived, most ingeniously, to combine in one building the architecture of various periods; it being the wish of one liberal benefactor to this work that the east end of the chancel should be erected in what was supposed to be the style of the original edifice, destroyed many years ago, this has been carried out in a very beautiful three-light lancet window, decorated with stained glass; the north side is Early Decorated, the south is left in the Perpendicular, but all combine harmoniously, while the interlacing of Bath, Bishop Lydiard, and Hamden Hill stone in arches and windows, the decorations of the chancel with marbles from Devonshire and Cornwall, and an exquisite reredos of Caen stone, ornamented with pillars, bosses and interlayings of marble, form a good specimen of modern art; the tower contains a peal of 7 bells and a clock. The parish register dates from the year 1590. The living is a discharged vicarage, yearly value £400, with residence and 22 acres of glebe, in the gift of the Bishop of Salisbury, and held by the Rev. George H P Barlow M.A. of Brasenose College, Oxford. All Saints ecclesiastical parish was formed out of the parishes of Chardstock and . KELLY’S DIRECTORY 1923 CHARDSTOCK

The introduction/overview of Chardstock is recorded in full below:

CHARDSTOCK is a parish and village, on a peninsula, between the counties of Dorset and Somerset, and was transferred from Dorsetshire to Devonshire by a Local Government Board Provisional Order Confirmation (No. 3); it is three miles west from Chard Junction station, on the Southern (late London and South Western) railway, three south-south-west from Chard stations on the Great Western and South railways, four north from Axminster, and nine and a half north-west from Lyme Regis, in the Eastern division of the county, hundred of Beaminster Forum and Redbourne, petty sessional division, union and county court district of Axminster, rural deanery of Bridport (Lyme portion), archdeaconry of Dorset and diocese of Salisbury.

The river Kit runs through the village and joins the river Axe at Axe farm. The church of St. Andrew, formerly consisting only of chancel and nave, was rebuilt and enlarged in 1864 by the addition of north aisle, south porch, organ chamber, and vestry, a chapel and a western tower containing 7 bells and a clock with Cambridge chimes: the chancel, designed in the Early English style, has a stained east window of three lancets, and a reredos of Caen stone; the north side is Early Decorated, and the south Perpendicular: there are sittings for 570 persons. The parish registers date from the year 1597, and are in excellent preservation. The living is a discharged vicarage, net yearly value £450, with residence, in the gift of the Bishop of Salisbury, and held since 1919 by the Rev. & Ven. Albert Ernest Joscelyne D.D. of Jesus College, Oxford, archdeacon of Sherborne and prebendary of Yatesbury and in Salisbury cathedral. In the village is a cross, erected by public subscription, to 14 men of the parish who fell in the Great War 1914-18. The charities amount to about £100 yearly, derived from Lady Mead and White’s charities left in land and funded property.

Chardstock Court, now the property and residence of Isaac Lisle Smith Esq. exhibits numerous traces of Early English work. The manor of Tytherleigh belongs to the Rev. F E W Langdon M.A. and was purchased by his ancestor in 1729 from Robert Tytherleigh, the last of the Tytherleighs of Tytherleigh. The principal landowners are Isaac Lisle Smith Esq., Rev. F E W Langdon M.A. and T D Eames Esq. The soil is chalk and clay in parts. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats and apples (apple trees being sent to all parts of Great Britain), and some land in pasture. The area is 5353 acres of land and 9 of water; rateable value £5910; the population of the civil parish in 1911 was 1033, and of St. Andrew ecclesiastical parish 850.

Alson, one mile south; and Tytherleigh, half-a-mile south-east, are hamlets in this parish; letters for Alson, through Chardstock, and Tytherleigh, through Chard. Crowley was for civil purposes annexed to Membury by Local Government Board Order 15.947 March 24, 1884.

Sexton, John Pearce.

Chardstock All Saints, two miles north-east from Axminster and two and a half south of Chardstock, is an ecclesiastical parish, formed out of the parishes of Chardstock and Axminster in 1841. The church, erected in 1840, is a plain building of stone consisting of chancel, nave and a western turret containing one bell: there is a mural tablet erected in memory of 17 men connected with the parish who fell in the Great War 1914-18: the church has 200 sittings. The register dates from the year 1840. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £235, including 33 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Bishop of Salisbury, and held since 1914 by the Rev. Gerald Henry George Goddard B.A. of St. Edmund Hall, Oxford. The population in 1911 was 417.

KELLY’S DIRECTORY 1939 - EXTRACTS RELATING TO CHARDSTOCK

The introduction to the 1939 directory is essentially the same as for 1935, except that since 1937 the living of St. Andrew’s Church (then valued at £340 net per annum) had been held by the Rev. John Alexander Ferguson B.A. of Queen’s University, Belfast. Also the Sexton is not named for either St. Andrew’s or All Saints Church.
