ANDREWS CHURCH - BAPTISMS Source: Chardstock Parish Registers and Bishop’s Transcripts Dates: 1579 to 1582 from Bishop’s Transcripts 1597 to 1846 transcripts from Parish Registers, except periods March 1707 to April 1713, July 1713 to August 1714 and August 1714 to June 1716 for which no records are available. 1847 to 1879 transcripts have been taken from photocopies of the Bishop’s Transcripts of the Chardstock Parish Registers, held in Wiltshire Records Office. Where these were unclear, they have been checked against microfiches of the originals, held in Devon Records Office, and altered as appropriate. There are a number of inconsistencies between the two versions; for instance Susan Cozins in the Bishop’s Transcript appears as Susan Cousins in the Parish Register. The Wiltshire records for years 1850, 1856, 1858 1862, 1864, 1865, 1868, 1871, 1873 and 1876 are missing, either because they were not copied originally or because they have been lost. These gaps have been made good from the Devon Records Office, and are included within this transcript. Both Parish Registers and Bishop’s Transcripts are given for the years 1847, 1848, 1849 and 1850. The researcher is strongly advised to consult the original copies at Wiltshire or Devon Record Office, and use these transcriptions only as a guide to what these sources contain. When using this site, the following points should also be borne in mind: Abbreviations have been avoided wherever possible and full stops have not been used in names, thus Wm C.     Axminster’s ‘Natural Hinterland’: Parishes, Villages and Hamlets Introduction Axminster is not only a market town with a very long history in its own right; it is both a civil parish and an ecclesiastical one (the two entities now cover largely, but not precisely, the same geographical area, but the boundaries have frequently been changed over time). Its strategic location is based on two geographical ‘facts on the ground’: the town overlooks the confluence of the Axe and the Yarty rivers, some 5 miles from the sea; and it sits at the junction of the ancient ‘Portway’ trade route and the Roman Fosse Way1. As the population density grew, these facts made it a natural focus for surrounding settlements, and in 1204 King John granted the Lord of the Manor the right to hold regular markets at Axminster. The question then arises: how far does this ‘natural hinterland’ spread? This map, from the 1950s, represents an area measuring about 16km (or 10 miles) from south to north (from Beer to Stockland), and about 13km (or 8 miles) from west to east (from Stockland to Forde Abbey). 1 There is scope for debate as to whether the Roman road which passes through Axminster formed part of the Fosse Way itself, or was simply one of several ‘feeder’ roads which joined the Fosse Way to the north of Chard. © Axminster Heritage Ltd. I certify that all material in this thesis which is not my own work has been identified and that no material has previously been submitted and approved for the award of a degree by this or any other University. ………………………………………. 1 ABSTRACT Extensive sources have been reviewed and analysed to piece together for the first time a detailed academic study of civilian evacuation to Devon1 viewed against the national backdrop. The primary focus of this thesis is the large number of unaccompanied children who were officially evacuated to the County under the auspices of the Government Evacuation Scheme during the Second World War. However, Chapter Six discusses the evacuation of mothers and accompanying children, unofficial (private) evacuees and private school parties. The majority of evacuated children arriving in Devon originated from the London area and southeastern counties. In addition large numbers of children were also evacuated to the County from Bristol and within the County from Plymouth (Devon) during 1941 and briefly from Exeter in May 1942. Each of the three national evacuation waves is considered individually throughout the text as they are quite distinct in complexion, a fact frequently ignored in generalised accounts which tend to focus on reaction to the initial wave.
