Where these were unclear, they have been checked against microfiches of the originals, held in Devon Records Office, and altered as appropriate. There are a number of inconsistencies between the two versions; for instance Susan Cozins in the Bishop’s Transcript appears as Susan Cousins in the Parish Register. The Wiltshire records for years 1850, 1856, 1858 1862, 1864, 1865, 1868, 1871, 1873 and 1876 are missing, either because they were not copied originally or because they have been lost. These gaps have been made good from the Devon Records Office, and are included within this transcript. Both Parish Registers and Bishop’s Transcripts are given for the years 1847, 1848, 1849 and 1850. The researcher is strongly advised to consult the original copies at Wiltshire or Devon Record Office, and use these transcriptions only as a guide to what these sources contain.     © University of London 2019 Text by Mary Siraut, Victoria County History, Somerset BISHOPS HULL Before the mid 19th century the ancient parish of Bishops Hull was not only a rural parish west of Taunton including the village of Bishops Hull, the large hamlet of Rumwell, the smaller hamlets of Fideoak, with Upcott and Barr, and Roughmoor and a few isolated farms and mills along the river but also the area of west Taunton roughly bounded by the Tone as far east as and including the Town Mills, the east and south walls of the castle precinct, the road to Wilton with an extension along the west side of Cann Street as far as Shuttern and the Sherford stream on the south west. Only on the north west did this urban enclave adjoin the rest of the parish. The area probably formed part of the original settlement of Taunton comprising the minster, cemeteries and possibly a royal hall. It was presumably transferred to Bishops Hull about the time of the construction of the castle in the 11th century possibly to keep the castle outside the borough although Wilton was closer.1 Taunton Castle and its outer precinct, now called Castle Green, the areas later known as Tangier and Stepswater, and St Paul’s medieval chapel and its surroundings were all in Bishops Hull parish. By the post- medieval period if not before that caused difficulties. In 1757 for example concern was expressed that troops had been billeted in bad houses in distant parts of the parish as well as in the Taunton area as intended.2 Although not formally constituted as a separate parish until 1885 it was rated separately by the 1840s when it was known as the Town Division as opposed to the main part of the parish called the Country Division.3 The town area until the 1880s was bounded by the river Tone on the north, Mill Lane and the outer ditch or moat of the castle on the east and south-east.

    Axminster’s ‘Natural Hinterland’: Parishes, Villages and Hamlets Introduction Axminster is not only a market town with a very long history in its own right; it is both a civil parish and an ecclesiastical one (the two entities now cover largely, but not precisely, the same geographical area, but the boundaries have frequently been changed over time). Its strategic location is based on two geographical ‘facts on the ground’: the town overlooks the confluence of the Axe and the Yarty rivers, some 5 miles from the sea; and it sits at the junction of the ancient ‘Portway’ trade route and the Roman Fosse Way1. As the population density grew, these facts made it a natural focus for surrounding settlements, and in 1204 King John granted the Lord of the Manor the right to hold regular markets at Axminster. The question then arises: how far does this ‘natural hinterland’ spread? This map, from the 1950s, represents an area measuring about 16km (or 10 miles) from south to north (from Beer to Stockland), and about 13km (or 8 miles) from west to east (from Stockland to Forde Abbey). 1 There is scope for debate as to whether the Roman road which passes through Axminster formed part of the Fosse Way itself, or was simply one of several ‘feeder’ roads which joined the Fosse Way to the north of Chard. © Axminster Heritage Ltd.
